“We are against Islam!”: The Lega Nord and the Islamic folk devil

Without requesting permission from the Author or SAGE, you may further copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the article, with the condition that the Author and SAGE Open are in each case credited as the source of the article.Since 1995, the Italian Lega Nord (LN) political party has depicted itself as the defender of Padania, a territory that covers the mainly affluent regions of Northern Italy. Around this politico-spatial territory, the LN has shaped an identity based on the notion of Popolo Padano (the Padanian People). Since the new millennium, LN rhetoric has increasingly focused—stemming more from the demands of realpolitik than those of conviction—on opposing irregular immigration per se and, more specifically, Islam and Muslim immigration. In the eyes of the LN propagandists and their media, the theology of Islam and its practitioners represent a growing threat to the modern Italian and Padanian identity (and tradition). The LN has not been alone in using the media to oppose Islam; the Italian media has reinforced LN messages; Muslims are generally depicted as dangerous and compared with terrorists and their religion and culture are described as the opposite of Italian/West values. Something approximating to a “moral panic” around this issue has ensued. Integral to this are notions of morality combined with practices of moral entrepreneurship. What follows seeks to highlight the LN’s stereotypical depictions of Islam. This evaluation is important because the LN was a major player in former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government (2008-2011) and is still a significant party among the Italian political spectrum. Integral to what follows are the following questions: “Is contemporary Islamic immigration a threat to the Italian (and Padanian) way of life?” and “Are the perceived threats to be found in the periodic uncertainties that societies suffer or might we need to search for wider processes?

Contro il paternalismo giuridico

In questo articolo, si argomenterà che il paternalismo giuridico non è una concezione etico-politica condivisibile. In base a tale concezione, infatti, lo Stato può usare la forza, contro la volontà di un individuo adulto, anche qualora le sue scelte siano razionali e libere da coazione altrui, al fine di tutelare (ciò che si pretende sia) il suo bene. In particolare, si argomenterà che quello dell’autonomia individuale sia un argomento, in favore dell’antipaternalismo, più forte e condivisibile dei due principali argomenti in favore del paternalismo, quello utilitarista/organicista e quello perfezionista. Questi ultimi due argomenti, correttamente interpretati, sono, infatti, incompatibili con alcuni principi costituzionali adottati, o con principi morali condivisi da molte persone, in molti Stati occidentali (oltre che, ça va sans dire, dall’autore).
Abstract
In this article, it is argued that legal paternalism is a wrong conception. According to legal paternalism, the State can use coercion, against the will of an adult agent, even if his choice is rational and free, for promoting (what the State pretends to be) his good. In particular, it is argued that the argument of individual autonomy, in favor of legal antipaternalism, is stronger than two main arguments in favor of legal paternalism, the utilitarian and the perfectionist argument. Both last arguments are contrary to some constitutional principles adopted, and to some moral principles shared by many people, in many Occidental countries (as well as, ça va sans dire, by the author)
A Directed Spanning Tree Adaptive Control Solution to Time-Varying Formations
No full textIn this article, the time-varying formation and time-varying formation tracking problems are solved for linear multiagent systems over digraphs without the knowledge of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated with the digraph. The solution to these problems relies on an approach that generalizes the directed spanning tree (DST) adaptive method, which was originally limited to consensus problems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to the formation problems are derived. Trajectory Tracking for Robotic Arms with Input Saturation and only Position Measurements
No full textThis paper proposes a passivity-based control approach that addresses the trajectory tracking problem for a class of mechanical systems that comprises a broad range of robotic arms. The resulting controllers can be naturally saturated and do not require velocity measurements. Moreover, the proposed methodology does not require the implementation of observers, and the structure of the closed-loop system permits the construction of a Lyapunov function, which eases the convergence analysis. The introduction of a compulsory vaccination in Italy: critical profiles
ABSTRACT: The multiple Covid-19 vaccines developed until now are typically thought of as the only means to meet the challenges posed by the current pandemic. The Italian legal system offers a composite framework for the regulation of vaccinations against Covid-19 and more precisely provides for the burden of vaccination for many categories of people (including healthcare workers). The purpose of this paper is to verify the legitimacy of a compulsory vaccination in the light of Italian and European sources of law. In this perspective, the Author argues that a compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 could be considered not consistent with both the Italian Constitution and the European legislation. Furthermore, the Author focuses on the phenomenon of vaccine esitancy, questioning whether a policy of mandatory vaccination is the proper tool for supporting the effective implementation of vaccination strategies
