Memoria y polifonía en "Liceo de niñas" de Nona Fernández

The present paper aims to perform a polyphonic analysis of the play Liceo de niñas by Chilean author Nona Fernández (2016). The analysis was based on Ducrot’s hypothesis (1980; 1986) that the polyphonic dimension is not only a discursive and stylistic device, as had already been observed by Bakhtin (1968), but also defines an inner characteristic of language structure. Therefore, as well as being rejected at a discursive and textual level, the uniqueness of the speaking subject would also be denied at the microlinguistic level. As a case in point, pragmatical phenomena, e.g. descriptive negation, irony and the use of discourse particles, provide a clear account of how polyphony is ultimately constitutive of linguistic organisation. Moreover, the current study partakes of the observations of Ferrari et al. (2008), namely the fact that utterances represent an interface between the linguistic level and the level of textual composition. Hence, linguistic analyses based on a polyphonic perspective proved a useful tool in explaining major discourse aspects of Fernández work, such as the heteroglossic nature of the notion of memory and the significance of individual testimonies in dealing with accounts of the past. I performed a polyphonic study of pragmatic phenomena occurring throughout the text in order to highlight the abovementioned discourse topics in Fernández play Liceo de niñas. In this regard, the intrinsically polyphonic nature of descriptive negation, along with restrictions on the use of some discourse particles were endorsed, thereby corroborating Ducrot’s insights

Includes bibliographical references and index."The collection of articles in Discourse Studies in Public Communication illustrate that public communication is a fascinating, evidence-based storehouse for research in discourse analysis. The contributions to this volume - in the spheres of political rhetoric, gender and sexuality, and corporate and academic communication - provide good evidence of contemporary social structure, social phenomena, and social issues. In this way, following the parameters of different analytical frameworks (critical discourse analysis, cognitive metaphor theory, appraisal theory, multimodality, etc.), the contributors address not only the linguistic aspects of texts but also, and more importantly, the cultural and cognitive dimensions of public communication in a range of real life communicative contexts and kinds of discourse. Although the volume is addressed, first and foremost, to readers with diverse interests in English linguistics, it may also prove valuable to scholars in other non-linguistic research fields like communication studies, social theory, political science, or psychology"--Introduction: Discourse analysis and public communication / Eliecer Crespo-Fernández -- Imagining the nation in British politics / Ruth Breeze -- Political and journalistic discourse regarding the Catalan declaration of independence : a critical analysis / Luis Escoriza Morera -- National vs international cartoons depicting Catalonia's independence process in the press : a critical multimodal metaphor approach / María Muelas-Gil -- A corpus-assisted qualitative approach to political discourse in Spanish print and digital press / Gérard Fernández Smith -- Persuasive discourse in Daniel Defoe's political essays : boosting and hedging / Rosa María López Campillo -- Politics beyond death? : an analysis of the obituaries of Belgian politicians / Priscilla Heynderickx and Sylvain Dieltjens -- It all comes down to sex : metaphorical animalisation in reggaeton discourse / Maria Jose Hellin Garcia -- Cyberbullying and gender : exploring socially deviant behavioural practices among teenagers on Twitter / Antonio García-Gómez -- A visual critical discourse analysis of women representation in Dolce & Gabbana advertising / María Martínez Lirola -- Let's talk about sex in high school : the TV series Sex education / Raquel Sánchez Ruiz -- Paralinguistic resources in persuasive business communication in English and Spanish / Ana M.
