    Emergency OPM Recreation and Telemetry for Disaster Recovery in Optical Networks

    Optical performance monitoring (OPM) and the corresponding telemetry systems play an important role in modern optical transport networks based on software-defined networking (SDN). There have been extensive studies and standardization activities to build high-speed and high-accuracy OPM/telemetry systems that can ensure sufficient monitoring data for effective network control and management. However, current solutions for OPM/telemetry assume that control and management planes (C/M-plane) always provide sufficient bandwidth (BW) to deliver telemetry data. Unfortunately, in the event of several concurrent network failures (e.g., following a large-scale disaster), C/M-plane networks can become heavily degraded and/or unstable, and even experience isolation of some of their parts. Under such circumstances, the existing OPM systems would hardly function. To enhance resiliency and to ensure the quick recovery of OPM/telemetry in case of disaster, we propose an approach for quick recreation of OPM and for achieving robust telemetry based on OpenConfig YANG. Our proposal addresses three key problems: (1) how to quickly recreate the lost OPM capability, (2) how to address the mismatch between the high data rate of OPM and the low BW in the C/M-plane network, and (3) how to flexibly reconfigure the telemetry system to be adaptive to sudden BW changes in the C/M-plane network. We implement a testbed and experimentally demonstrate that our proposal can tolerate low post-disaster bandwidth and can adapt the telemetry system following the changing conditions of the C/M-plane network

    Interactions between endothelial cells and epithelial cells in a combined cell model of airway mucosa: effects on tight junction permeability

    Environmental particulates impact first on airway epithelium, whereas circulating infiltrating cells are recruited through the underlying endothelium. An effective cellular immune response requires coordination between endothelium and epithelium. The authors have developed a bilayer culture model consisting of human bronchial epithelial derived cells (16HBE 14o-) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured as confluent layers on either side of a porous membrane. Confocal microscopy with epithelial and endothelial-specific antibodies showed segregated cell layers. By scanning and transmission electron microscopy, both cell types are polarized and tight junctions formed at the apical interface between cells. Epithelial cells grown in a bilayer showed significantly increased transepithelial resistance (TER) of 2260 +/- 64 Omega.cm(2) compared to epithelial or endothelial monolayers alone (1400 +/- 70 or 80 +/- 12 Omega.cm(2), respectively). This reflected decreased permeability and was unrelated to cell density or height. Increased TER coincided with increased occludin mRNA and protein in the epithelial cell layer as determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunoblotting. Conditioned medium showed that decreased permeability was mediated by soluble endothelial-derived factor(s). This model reflects the in vivo relationship of human airway endothelial cells and epithelial cells. Altered tight junction permeability in cocultures indicates that these cells can work together as an active part of the mucosal barrier

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Disaster-aware datacenter placement and dynamic content management in cloud networks

    Recent targeted attacks and natural disasters have made disaster-resilient cloud network design an important issue. Network operators are investigating proactive and reactive measures to prevent huge data loss and service disruptions in case of a disaster. We present novel techniques for disaster-aware datacenter placement and content management in cloud networks that can mitigate such loss by avoiding placement in given disaster-vulnerable locations. We first solve a static disaster-aware datacenter and content placement problem by adopting an integer linear program with the objective to minimize risk, defined as expected loss of content. It is a measure of how much, in terms of cost or penalty, a network operator may lose probabilistically due to possible disasters in a cloud network. We also show how a service provider's budget constraint can affect disaster-aware placement design. Since disaster scenarios, content popularity, and/or importance are always changing in time, content placement should rapidly adapt to these changes. We propose a disaster-aware dynamic content-management algorithm that can adjust the existing placement based on dynamic settings. Besides reducing the overall risk and making the network disaster-aware, reducing network resource usage and satisfying quality-of-service requirements can also be achieved in this approach. We also provide a cost analysis of employing a dynamic disaster-aware placement design in the network based on real-world cloud pricing
