Abstract
We report 50 patients who had sinus lift operations between 1995 and 1999 using different grafting materials [autologous bone, heterologous bone, and hydroxyapatite]. The casenote were analysed clinically (intraoperative and postoperative results and complications), radiographically (amount of augmented bone 6 months postoperatively), and histologically (quality of the new bone 12 months postoperatively). Our aim was to find out if the various bone grafting materials used resulted in different outcomes after adjustment for significant predictors. We found that hydroxyapatite was associated with the lowest rate of loss of grafted material (median, 2.4 mm) followed by the autologous bone from iliac crest (2.8 mm). Bovine bone shown the highest loss (3.3 mm).

An international cooperation by using an all-encompassing passive radon monitor
The recently developed radon film-badge makes it possible to measure radon indoors, in soil, in water and/or in aqueous media (e.g. mud). As a result of its wide response linearity, this monitor has been successfully used to measure radon in-water with concentrations from 10 to ~10 000 Bq/L. By exploiting the unique characteristics of this badge, a mini-survey has been carried out by Health Canada in which radon in water was measured from 12 private wells, as well as in tap water originating from the Ottawa River. Due to the widespread interest of different laboratories in using these passive monitors, laboratories were provided with plastic films to construct their own badges by using in-house CR-39 detectors. Monitors were then irradiated by a known radon concentration at the National Institute of Radiation Metrology (ENEA)'s radon chamber and sent back to each laboratory for processing and counting. Even though these laboratories have been using different etching- and counting-procedures, the film-badge responses varied only within ~12%. © The Author 2017. Published by Oxford University Press. A novel radionuclide-specific detector system for the measurement of radioactivity at steelworks
A new instrument to detect radioactive contamination in cast steel, slag and fume dust from steelworks is proposed. It is based on an electrically cooled HPGe detector. Experimental data presented show that it matches the requirements of the European Metrology Research Project “MetroMetal” and can replace, with significant advantages, existing equipment. The advantages (energy resolution, better nuclide identification) over common systems (scintillators) as well as drawbacks (lower efficiency) are discussed and typical MDAs values are presented together with the results from measurements of reference sources. © 2015, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary
Uncertainties in surface emission rate measurements
The uncertainties in surface emission rates determined by gas-flow proportional counters (multiwired) are broken down into alpha and beta emission rate determinations. Counting statistics, spectrum analysis, and electronic uncertainties are discussed with respect to the actual counting of the respective emission rate. The effects of source construction on the uncertainties are also examined. © 2015 BIPM & IOP Publishing Ltd
