The Geometry of Coincidence: Nicholas of Cusa and the Quadrature of the Circle

    No full text
This book offers a contribution to our understanding of Nicholas of Cusa’s theory of geometry. It is based not only on his—generally more famous—philosophical texts (e.g., De docta ignorantia, Idiota, etc.), but also, and more significantly, on the strictly speaking mathematical texts drafted between 1445 and 1459, where Cusanus attempts to provide a solution to the vexata quaestio of the squaring of the circle. First critically edited in 2010—and translated into Italian by the author in 2020—Cusanus’ Scripta mathematica are here scrutinized as to their context, genesis, and content, in order to shed light, on the one hand, on the philosophical and theological motives behind Cusanus’ mathematical endeavours; and, on the other hand, on the scope and limits of Cusanus’ geometrical constructive attempts to reach “mathematical perfection”. In addition to providing a scrupulous survey of Cusanus’ sources on mathematics, this book focuses on a little explored aspect in Cusanus’ work, namely his original theory of geometrical space as men’s space, where the activity of mensurare takes place, establishing relations of continuous proportionality to the original unity. In conclusion, the author provides an extensive account on the reception of Cusanus’ mathematical texts, from their early dissemination to the reactions of several thinkers throughout history, ensuring a full and rounded overview of Cusanus’ work in geometry, mathematics, and philosophy

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Italian general psychiatry and forensic psychiatry treatment model: a unique story

The history of Italian general psychiatry and forensic psychiatry over the last 50 years has been unique in the European and Western healthcare landscape. Western politicians often visit Italy to observe the successful community-based systems that have developed in that country. This article represents a first step toward a necessary attempt, to explore how specific political decisions, such as the Italian one, have produced positive outcomes for patients with psychotic disorders, outcomes not observed in many Western countries, which are instead grappling with negative outcomes such as the complicated management of homelessness and the incarceration of people who would instead require psychiatric care. In its historical context, the 1978 decision to abandon the asylum tradition in favor of socialization for patients living with severe mental disorders represented a difficult choice. This choice led to inevitable critical issues, which today are still not completely dormant. This choice has also, undoubtedly, restored dignity to people living with serious mental illness, even when that person commits a crime. To understand these changes, it is appropriate to mention the regulations that finally led to Law number 180 of 1978, which decreed the closure of psychiatric hospitals (Ospedale Psichiatrico) throughout Italy and continued after 2015 with the closure of high-security psychiatric hospitals (Ospedale Psichiatrico Giudiziario) as well. Culturally, much has changed throughout this time in assistance to the mentally ill in Europe

On the Philosophical Foundations of Measurements in General Relativity

    No full text
In this paper, first, the question of what a measurement is in General Relativity is tackled; then, some foundational problems it involves are analysed. In particular, by recalling what a measurement is in general, we will try to precisely define what it is in General Relativity. Then, we will analyse, by means of a suitable example, same foundational problems it involves. It will be stressed that such foundational problems do not arise owing to the gauge invariance or the correlation among the measuring observers but owing to the principle of equivalence

[18F]PARPi-PET in locally advanced oral cavity carcinoma

    No full text
Treatment of locally advanced oral cavity carcinoma (OCC) generally includes surgical resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) [1]. Adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is usually required in case of extranodal extension and/or positive surgical margins [1]. In this setting, post-treatment evaluation of loco-regional status becomes difficult to visualize on clinical exam due to tissue distortion from prior surgery and flap reconstruction and RT-related effects on healthy tissues. Follow-up imaging recommendations indicate to repeat pre-treatment baseline imaging within 3 months of adjuvant therapy [1]. Discrimination of treatment injury from recurrent tumor represents still a major clinical need [2–4]. Recently, several reports on human cancers have suggested that positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorine-18 poly adenosine diphosphate ribose polymerase ([18F]PARP) tracer can discern these entitie
