    The minimally invasive total hip replacement via the direct anterior approach: A short term clinical and radiological results

    Introduction: There has been a recent interest in the minimally invasive approaches for hip replacements. The direct anterior approach is characterised by being a muscle preserving approach which should make it an ideal minimally invasive approach. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the short term results and the complications of primary total hip replacements done through this approach. Methods: This study included twenty uncemented primary hip replacements done in eighteen patients. The average age at the time of surgery was 71.5 years and the average body mass index was 22.5. The period of follow up ranged from 26 to 43 months. Results: The length of hospital stay ranged from 3 days up to 19 days with a median of 5 days. Trendelenberg test was negative in 18 cases (90%). The Oxford hip score improved from a median of 16.5 preoperatively to a median of 40.5 postoperatively which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Radiographically, seventeen hips (85%) had no malalignment of the stem with neutral position, and the cup version ranged from 14° to 45° of anteversion with a median of 26° whilst the cup abduction angle ranged from 35° to 63° with a median of 46.5. The complications included hyposthesia at the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh distribution in four cases (20%), partial femoral nerve palsy in one case, one early postoperative dislocation and one femoral shaft penetration. Conclusion: Total hip replacement through the direct anterior approach can offer an early good functional recovery with a short hospital stay. It may be associated with specific complications related to the approach which the surgeon should be aware of; especially in the start of his learning curve of the approach

    An Intelligent Traffic Flow Progression Model for Predictive Control Applications: A Proposed Approach for Making Short-term Traffic Flow Predictions, Using a Recurrent, Multi-task Learning Neural Network Model, to Transform Traffic Light Controllers from Adaptive to Predictive with Minimal Hardware Changes

    This study explores the possibility of developing a short-term traffic flow prediction model that can be used to convert installed adaptive controllers to predictive controllers with minimal hardware changes. By using the prediction model’s outputs to virtually trigger vehicle loop detectors, the outputs of an adaptive controller can be extracted in advance of actual vehicle arrivals. This will enable service providers to send out time to green/red (T2G/R) information or green light optimal speed advice (GLOSA), which are driver assistance use cases that aim to efficiently guide vehicles through intersections, in anticipation of known upcoming signal states. The main requirements for developing the prediction model are that it should be scalable to different intersection configurations, adaptable to different traffic conditions and should encompass the nonlinearity of traffic flow behavior. Since it fits these criteria, the developed model is a multi-task learning recurrent neural network with exogenous inputs (NARX), which is designed to match the traffic flow simulation abilities of a well adopted analytical traffic flow progression model. Both models were tested for a corridor in Delft that experiences almost consistent free flow conditions, and on an intersection in Haarlem with varying traffic conditions. For both case studies the neural network outperformed the analytical model. Most notably, it was better adaptable to long queues at intersections, had lower average error values, made fewer large errors, and better recognized the effect of a source/sink. When interfaced with an adaptive controller to test the predictive control methodology proposed, the superiority of the designed neural network model over the analytical model became more prominent. At no point did the neural network’s prediction errors result in queue spill-back, which was not true for the analytical model. However, the overall accuracy of the NARX model was still not yet satisfactory enough for practical application (especially for highly under-saturated traffic conditions) without the use of corrective measures. Nonetheless, due to its significant superiority over the widely used analytical model, with regards to both accuracy and adaptability, this model can be considered as a new starting point for traffic flow progression modeling.Transport, Infrastructure and Logistic

    Internet media has an important role in the process of interpretation today. Before the arrival of this new medium, knowledge of religion is accessed through the literature of the books of Tafseer, fiqh, and other books. Nowadays people are getting easier to access anything with internet media including religious material. This article specifically discusses how netizens interpret al-Maidah: 51 which became a trending topic some time ago related to the national issue of non-Muslim leaders in the majority Muslim community. This discussion focuses on two questions. First, How does the role of netizens interpret al-Maidah: 51. Second, How about Netizen's understanding of choosing non-Muslim leaders? In this article, the author collects a variety of writings from the netizens who write al-Maidah's commentary in the internet media. The results showed that netizens used a variety of methods. Some netizens discussed it with the usual steps in the science of exegesis. Some others tend to take only a few steps to quote the opinions of the former Mufassir. In this case, the more complete the approach used the more effective the interpretation result will be. From this explanation can also be underlined that the interpretation circulating on the internet enough to give a new color for the development of contemporary interpretation and become a reference for each reader.</jats:p

    In this article, the author provides motivation in allocating a new formative Pecha Kucha (PK) presentation assignment on one economic school of thought to groups of students in a History of Economic Thought (HET) course. Each group would then post its PK on the Moodle course forum and comment on other PK presentations. The assignment was aimed at engaging students more with technology; in learning on their own, with each other and from each other; in acquiring abstracting skills; in addressing the breadth rather than only the depth of learning; and in making use of the brevity of PK in shortening the long history of economics. The author expounds the advantages and limitations of this assignment in addition to its applicability in other courses

    Where are you going next? A practical multi-dimensional look at mobility prediction

    Understanding and predicting mobility are essential for the design and evaluation of future mobile edge caching and networking. Consequently, research on human mobility prediction has drawn significant attention in the last decade. Employing information-theoretic concepts and machine learning methods, earlier research has shown evidence that human behavior can be highly predictable. Whether high predictability manifests itself for different modes of device usage, across spatial and temporal dimensions is still debatable. Despite existing studies, more investigations are needed to capture intrinsic mobility characteristics constraining predictability, to explore more dimensions (e.g. device types) and spatiotemporal granularities, especially with the change in human behavior and technology. We investigate practical predictability of next location visitation across three different dimensions: device type, spatial granularity and temporal spans using an extensive longitudinal dataset, with fine spatial granularity (AP level) covering 16 months. The study reveals device type as an important factor affecting predictability. Ultra-portable devices such as smartphones have”on-the-go” mode of usage (and hence dubbed”Flutes”), whereas laptops are”sit-to-use” (dubbed”Cellos”). The goal of this study is to investigate practical prediction mechanisms to quantify predictability as an aspect of human mobility modeling, across time, space and device types. We apply our systematic analysis to wireless traces from a large university campus. We compare several algorithms using varying degrees of temporal and spatial granularity for the two modes of devices; Flutes vs. Cellos. Through our analysis, we quantify how the mobility of Flutes is less predictable than the mobility of Cellos. In addition, this pattern is consistent across various spatio-temporal granularities, and for different methods (Markov chains, neural networks/deep learning, entropy-based estimators).     Cross-Domain Semantic Web Model for Understanding Multilingual Natural Language Queries: English/Arabic Health/Food Domain Use Case

    AbstractWith the growth of the Semantic Web and its applications, the need to use it in different languages, such as Arabic, is becoming more important. Two of the challenges with the Semantic Web technologies are the lack of multilingual support and the complexity of integrating multiple ontologies used by this technology. The objective of this paper is to present efforts that will help users who use the Arabic language to ask natural language questions and then get their semantic representation in SPARQL that allows them to be executed and get the relevant semantic results. This natural language interface makes more use of the cross-domain ontologies and hence improves the understanding of their inquiries, which is needed in some critical domains such as health and food where precise advice is essential. The approach we followed is multilingual and overcomes the limitations in the published relevant systems. With the proposed approach, users who speak Arabic can use the widely published ontologies in English without concern for the translation of their questions. The proposed approach will take care of matching the entered questions with the relevant ontologies to produce their semantic Web queries. The proposed approach has been implemented and empirically evaluated. The experimental results are promising, which will help in improving the awareness and usage of the Semantic Web by different lingual and cultural users
