Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Author: Barbora Pšenková Title: Application of the plyometric method to develop maximum sprint speed Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to create a comprehensive literature search in the field of maximum speed development using plyometric method, followed by compiling a set of plyometric exercises and designing a plyometric training plan. Methods: The method of this work is literature search. Results: Based on the literature search, the theoretical foundations related to maximum speed and plyometrics were analyzed. The results of the literature search confirmed that plyometric training has a positive effect on maximum speed. Furthermore, the principles of creating and applying plyometric training were analyzed, leading to the compilation of a set of twelve plyometric exercises. These exercises were subsequently incorporated into an illustrative training plan, which, after customization according to the individual needs of the athlete, can be suitable for implementation in training practice. Keywords: plyometrics, strech-shortening cycle, speed training, sprint, maximum speed, performance optimization, training pla

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Author: Matěj Sichrovský Title: Strength training for the development of acceleration Objectives: The aim of my thesis is to create a review of literature and studies in the field of acceleration development through strength training. In the practical part, my aim will be to select appropriate strength exercises and to develop a training plan within the training cycle. Methods: Literature search Results: Theoretical backgrounds related to acceleration and strength training were analyzed based on the literature. The results of the literature search and several studies confirmed that strength training has a positive effect on the development of acceleration. Furthermore, nine strength exercises were included in the training plan that may be suitable for application in training practice. Keywords: strength training, sprinting, maximal strength, explosive strength, acceleration, powe

Author: Bc. Zuzana Buroňová Title: Athletics in the Special Olympics: development in the context of developmental stages of social perception and management after 1990 Objective: Formulation of a development curve in athletics of national, regional and world (only the participation of our athletes) summer Special Olympics in the years 1991-2023 in terms of the number of participants, athletic disciplines and performance changes in the social context. Methods: The research is based on a quantitative analysis of secondary data from the official results of Special Olympics athletic competitions. The data were categorized according to the level of competition, year of the event, gender and athletic disciplines. Descriptive statistics, an analytical-synthetic approach and data comparison were used in the processing. The results were presented in graphs. Results: The results of the analysis of Special Olympics athletics competitions in the Czech Republic for the period 1991-2023 revealed several key trends. The number of participants in the national Special Olympics games of the Czech Republic is gradually decreasing, which can be attributed to insufficient financial support and qualified coaches. In conclusion, the average age of athletes is increasing, which can be associated with better health care..

Title of the Bachelor's Thesis: Comparison of Physical Fitness in 8th Grade Primary School Pupils Attending Sports and Regular Classes Author: Adéla Vélová Thesis supervisor: PhDr. Aleš Kaplan, Ph.D. Aim of the Thesis: The aim of my thesis is to determine the physical fitness of pupils attending a sports class aimed at athletics and pupils attending a regular class with standard physical education. I concentrate on pupils in 8th grade of primary school (ages 13 to 14). The thesis compares data with the results obtained in a sports class at a different primary school 25 years ago. Methodology: The main method involves practical testing of pupils by UNIFITTEST (6-60) test battery composed of various motor tests. For the purpose of my Bachelor's thesis, I chose four motor tests - standing broad jump, repeated sit-ups in 60 seconds, 12-minute run and a 4x10m shuttle run. All the measured data are compared with UNIFITTEST standards for individual age categories. The thesis also contains a short questionnaire survey identifying the pupils' opinion on physical activity. Results: The pupils attending the sports class achieved better results in all four motor tests than the pupils going to the regular class. The pupils in the sports class mostly achieved above-average results; their worst ranking was..

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
