Adrianus van Selms (1906-1984) was a Dutch pastor (1930-1938) who became senior lecturer and professor in Semitic languages at the University of Pretoria (1938-1972) and lecturer in Biblical archaeology (1938-1962) at the Faculty of Theology of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (Dutch Reformed Church of Africa). He was an acknowledged academic in South Africa and abroad and the author of numerous publications. His books were predominantly in Dutch, but he wrote most of his articles in English, thus they are theoretically accessible to the scholarly public. A number of articles, however, were published in Dutch and Afrikaans, dialects that are less easy to comprehend by those not familiar with the said two languages. The present book is an attempt to overcome the linguistic barrier and to present in a summarised way Van Selms’ contributions in three Dutch journals (Onder Eigen Vaandel, Nederlands Theologish Tijdschrift, and Kerk en Theologie), two academically-orientated Afrikaans journals (Hervormde Teologiese Studies and Acta Classica) and three journals of a more popular nature (Die Hervormer, Pro Veritate and Almanak). In total, 87 separate articles (discussed in 79 sections) of Van Selms receive attention

    No full text
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the reasonnings of an author belonging to the Flemish School, Adrian von Schrieck or Schrieckius (1560-1621). His line of arguments is that of an historian of the indo-european civilization. He endeavours to show that the Scytho-celtic or Belgian tongue was the first to be found after the confusion of Babel. He carries out a segmentation of the word-forms of the original language; the resulting list of segments is then applied ta the words of various languages. These segments are therefore seen as universally recurrent forms. From madrasah to museum : a biography of the Islamic manuscripts of Cape Town

    No full text
This paper focuses on the Islamic manuscripts of Cape Town, locally referred to as kietaabs, written by Muslims predominantly in the 19th century, in jawi (Arabic-Malay) and Arabic-Afrikaans. Inspired by the idea of a 'biography' of the archive and 'the social life of things', the study traces the life of the kietaabs, from their creation and original use, to their role in contemporary South African society, as objects of heritage and identity. It approaches the kietaabs as objects, emphasizing their movements, status and use, rather than their content

Exploiting Monotonicity Constraints in Active Learning for Ordinal Classification

    No full text
We consider ordinal classication and instance ranking problems where each attribute is known to have an increasing or decreasing relation with the class label or rank. For example, it stands to reason that the number of query terms occurring in a document has a positive in uence on its relevance to the query. We aim to exploit such monotonicity constraints by using labeled attribute vectors to draw conclusions about the class labels of order related unlabeled ones. Assuming we have a pool of unlabeled attribute vectors, and an oracle that can be queried for class labels, the central problem is to choose a query point whose label is expected to provide the most information. We evaluate dierent query strategies by comparing the number of inferred labels after some limited number of queries, as well as by comparing the prediction errors of models trained on the points whose labels have been determined so far. We present an ecient algorithm to determine the query point preferred by the well-known active learning strategy generalized binary search. This algorithm can be applied to binary classication on incomplete matrix orders. For non-binary classication, we propose to include attribute vectors in the training set whose class labels have not been uniquely determined yet. We perform experiments on articial and real data

    Exceptional Model Mining

    No full text
Finding subsets of a dataset that somehow deviate from the norm, i.e. where something interesting is going on, is a classical Data Mining task. In traditional local pattern mining methods, such deviations are measured in terms of a relatively high occurrence (frequent itemset mining), or an unusual distribution for one designated target attribute (common use of subgroup discovery). These, however, do not encompass all forms of “interesting”. To capture a more general notion of interestingness in subsets of a dataset, we develop Exceptional Model Mining (EMM). This is a supervised local pattern mining framework, where several target attributes are selected, and a model over these targets is chosen to be the target concept. Then, we strive to find subgroups: subsets of the dataset that can be described by a few conditions on single attributes. Such subgroups are deemed interesting when the model over the targets on the subgroup is substantially different from the model on the whole dataset. For instance, we can find subgroups where two target attributes have an unusual correlation, a classifier has a deviating predictive performance, or a Bayesian network fitted on several target attributes has an exceptional structure. We give an algorithmic solution for the EMM framework, and analyze its computational complexity. We also discuss some illustrative applications ofEMMinstances, including using the Bayesian network model to identify meteorological conditions under which food chains are displaced, and using a regression model to find the subset of households in the Chinese province of Hunan that do not follow the general economic law of demand

A Quantitative Comparison of Semantic Web Page Segmentation Approaches

    No full text
This paper explores the effectiveness of different semantic webpage segmentation algorithms on modern websites. We comparethree known algorithms each serving as an example of a particular approach to the problem, and one self-developed algorithm,WebTerrain, that combines two of the approaches. With our testingframework we have compared the performance of four algorithmsfor a large benchmark we have constructed. We have examinedeach algorithm for a total of eight different configurations (varying datasets, evaluation metric and the type of the input HTMLdocuments). We found that all algorithms performed better on random pages on average than on popular pages, and results are better when running the algorithms on the HTML obtained from the DOM rather than on the plain HTML. Overall there is much room for improvement as we find the best average F-score to be 0.49, indicating that for modern websites currently available algorithms are not yet of practical use

Skripsi.Surakarta. Skripsi. Surakarta. Social and Political Sciences Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, April 2012. The objective of research was intended to find out the Social Exchange Pattern and Game Pattern occurring in Online Gamers. This study was a descriptive qualitative research attempting to give a description on any behavior exhibited by the Online Gamers in Dragon Game Center. In this study, the author employed a social exchange theory according to George C. Homans. This theory mentioned that the general principle changing or affecting the human behavior was more due to the interaction of one human with another, than to the interaction or the effect of physical environment. The research location is in Dragon game center,in where there were many severely addicted online gamers and it was located in dense area behind Sebelas Maret University campus. Technique of collecting data used in this research was participatory observation and interview. Then, the sampling technique used in this research was Snowball Sampling. The result of research showed how the gaming pattern of online game and the social exchange pattern of online gamers. They played the game continuously thereby spent much money to meet their game character need, spend much time to play the game in catching the level or to trade in order to earn money and also lose their social life in society environment because they socialized very rarely with the society surrounding. They made fellow gamers throughout Indonesia as their friend. They played because they had shared objective to be recognized as the god in the game they played, or even only to earn money by means of trading the item, to trade the game money redeemed with rupiah, or to become jockey to raise the level of the game. They playing the game also got severe punishment, such as reprimand from their parents, their education was distracted and drop out. Keywords: Online Gamers, Game Online, Social Exchange
