Low-Energy Resonances and Direct Capture Cross Section in the Reaction
The 22Ne(p,γ)23Na reaction takes part in the neon-sodium (NeNa) cycle of hydrogen burning. The 22Ne(p,γ)23Na reaction rate was the most uncertain in the NeNa cycle because of a large number of uncertain resonances in the Gamow window. A new direct study of the 22Ne(p,γ)23Na reaction has been completed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA), using a windowless gas target and two complementary setups. Three new resonances at 156.2, 189.5 and 259.7 keV have been discovered and their decay scheme has been determined both with a high-resolution setup and with a high-efficiency one. Improved upper limits have been put for the tentative resonances at 71 and 105 keV, making their contribution to the thermonuclear reaction rate almost irrelevant. The high-efficiency setup allowed the measurement of the non-resonant cross section at unprecedentedly low energies
Non‐Covalent and Covalent Binding of New Mixed‐Valence Cage‐like Polyoxidovanadate Clusters to Lysozyme
: The high-resolution X-ray structures of the model protein lysozyme in the presence of the potential drug [VIVO(acetylacetonato)2] from crystals grown in 1.1 M NaCl, 0.1 M sodium acetate at pH 4.0 reveal the binding to the protein of different and unexpected mixed-valence cage-like polyoxidovanadates (POVs): [V15O36(OH2)]5-, which non-covalently interacts with the lysozyme surface, [V15O33(OH2)]+ and [V20O51(OH2)]n- (this latter based on an unusual {V18O43} cage) which covalently bind the protein. EPR spectroscopy confirms the partial oxidation of VIV to VV and the formation of mixed-valence species. The results indicate that the interaction with proteins can stabilize the structure of unexpected - both for dimension and architecture - POVs, not observed in aqueous solution
