Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Dispersão de grafeno e óxido de grafeno em matrizes poliméricas
Nanocompósitos poliméricos obtidos pela inserção de cargas bidimensionais (2D) via mistura no estado fundido têm sido objeto de estudo de diversos pesquisadores, devido ao aumento nas propriedades mecânicas, térmicas e elétricas que estas partículas podem proporcionar ao polímero. Este aumento nas propriedades citadas depende diretamente da dispersão das nanopartículas na matriz e da interação gerada entre carga e polímero. Este trabalho refere-se à preparação e caracterização de nanocompósitos a base de polietileno linear de baixa densidade – PELBD e poli[(adipato de butileno)-co-(tereftalato de butileno)] – PBAT como matrizes e óxido de grafeno e grafeno como cargas, e assim avaliar o nível de interação dessas cargas com cada tipo de polímero e como isso se reflete nas propriedades físicas desses materiais. O óxido de grafite (GrO) obtido pelo método de Hummers foi caracterizado por espectroscopia Raman, difração de raios-X (DRX) e análise térmogravimétrica (TGA). Em seguida, foi realizada a esfoliação por ultrassom para a obtenção do óxido de grafeno (GO), com posterior caracterização por microscopia de força atômica (AFM). O grafeno comercial adquirido foi analisado e a espectroscopia Raman sinalizou um grafeno contendo poucas camadas. Os nanocompósitos foram obtidos via mistura no estado fundido através do método Solid Solid Deposition em extrusora dupla rosca, utilizando-se concentrações de carga entre 0 - 0,3% em massa. Os nanocompósitos foram caracterizados por diferentes técnicas: ensaios mecânicos (tração), ensaios reológicos, análise dinâmico-mecânica (DMA), análise térmica de calorimetria exploratória diferencial (DSC), difração de raios-X (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os nanocompósitos de PELBD/G apresentaram aumentos significativos nas propriedades mecânicas para todas as composições utilizadas, superiores aos resultados obtidos para PELBD/GO. Da mesma forma, os nanocompósitos com grafeno apresentaram menor amortecimento (tan ) em relação aos nanocompósitos com óxido de grafeno. Ambas as nanopartículas atuaram como agentes nucleantes para o PELBD e não apresentaram indícios de re-empilhamento na matriz polimérica. Entretanto, somente o nanocompósito PELBD/G (0,05%) apresentou a formação de um platô no módulo de armazenamento (G’) a baixas frequências nos ensaios reológicos. Os nanocompósitos de PBAT/GO apresentaram maiores módulo de Young, deformação na ruptura e tenacidade nos ensaios mecânicos em relação ao PBAT/G. O óxido de grafeno auxiliou no processo de cristalização do PBAT e aumentou a sua cristalinidade nas concentrações de 0,05% e 0,3%. O grafeno também atuou como agente nucleante para o PBAT, mesmo com o indício do seu reempilhamento no polímero. Nos ensaios reológicos, somente os nanocompósitos PBAT/GO exibiram o início da formação de um platô no módulo de armazenamento (G’) em baixas frequências. Estes resultados indicam que os sistemas PELBD/G e PBAT/GO são que apresentam melhor distribuição e dispersão das nanopartículas na matriz polimérica, decorrente de sua maior interação carga e polímero; o que promove um maior aumento nas propriedades dos nanocompósitos.Polymer nanocomposites obtained by the insertion of two-dimensional (2D) filler via melt mixing have been the subject of study by several researchers due to the increase in the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties that these particles can provide to the polymer. This increase in the mentioned properties depends directly on the dispersion of the nanoparticles in the matrix and the interaction generated between filler and polymer. This work deals with to the preparation and characterization of nanocomposites based on linear low density polyethylene - LLDPE and Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) - PBAT as matrices and graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) as fillers, and thus evaluate the interaction of these charges with each type of polymer and how this is reflected in the physical properties of these materials. Graphite oxide (GrO) obtained by the Hummers method was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Then, ultrasound exfoliation was performed to obtain graphene oxide (GO), with later characterization by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The commercial graphene acquired was analyzed and Raman spectroscopy signaled a graphene containing few layers. The nanocomposites were obtained by melt mixing using the Solid Solid Deposition method in a twin-screw extruder, using filler concentrations between 0 - 0.3% in weight. The nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques: mechanical analysis (tension), rheological analysis, dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The LLDPE/G nanocomposites showed significant increases in mechanical properties for all compositions used, higher than the results obtained for LLDPE/GO. Likewise, graphene nanocomposites showed less damping factor (tan ) compared to graphene oxide nanocomposites. Both nanoparticles acted as nucleating agents for LLDPE and showed no evidence of re-stacking in the polymeric matrix. However, only the LLDPE/G nanocomposite (0.05%) showed the formation of a plateau in the storage modulus (G ') at low frequencies in rheological analysis. The PBAT / GO nanocomposites showed higher Young's modulus, deformation at break and toughness in mechanical tests compared to PBAT/G. Graphene oxide aided the PBAT crystallization process and increased its crystallinity at concentrations of 0.05% and 0.3%. Graphene also acted as a nucleating agent for PBAT, even with the indication of its re-stacking in the polymer. In rheological tests, only PBAT/GO nanocomposites exhibited the beginning of the formation of a plateau in the storage modulus (G ') at low frequencies. These results indicate that the LLDPE/G and PBAT/GO systems have the best distribution and dispersion of nanoparticles in the polymeric matrix, due to their greater interaction between load and polymer, which promotes a greater increase in the properties of nanocomposites.Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquis
