Silence in Second Language Learning. Colette A. Granger (2004) [review]
A review of 'Silence in Second Language Learning' by Colette A. Granger published by Multilingual Matters LTD, Series: Second Language Acquisition 6 2004. ISBN 1-85359-697-3. The fundamental question that the author attempts to elucidate is: “What is the significance of silence in the process of learning to speak” (p. 5) in a second language? This puzzling question sits uneasily within the common sense view that speaking a language is helpful for learning it, and within the more theoretical view of the second language learning process as an apprenticeship into new discourse practices. This title may even seem unsettling, if not downright paradoxical, from a language pedagogy perspective entrenched in a Western tradition that requires classroom participants to engage in some kind of dialogic exchange. A further difficulty rests with the methodological issue of how to analyse the meaning of silence when the content is absent. Finally, one might question the usefulness of such an exploration. The author genuinely acknowledges these conflicting issues from the start and clearly states her intention to address them systematically. To this effect, she adopts a psychoanalytic theory as an
interpretive framework for her study

German Occupation, Resistance and the Immediate Postwar Years – The Politicization of Colette and Colette de Jouvenel
Much has been written about Colette’s assertion that women should not engage in political life; she never understood herself as a feminist. Her daughter Colette de Jouvenel, however, initially an unmotivated dressmaker’s apprentice, who spent the 1930s working in the film industry, became a feminist and political activist supporting the Resistance movement. This article focuses on the dynamics between Colette, the famous author, and Colette de Jouvenel, her daughter. In this article, I contend that women’s paramount role in the Resistance movement as well as the role intellectuals held in the Resistance and the influence they exerted on the literary scene of the postwar years, contributed to both women’s politicization. Colette de Jouvenel’s political activism during World War II as well as her committed journalism, recognized by intellectuals during the postwar era, can be seen as a driving force that also contributed to Colette’s desire to embrace a more overt political stance, relativizing her earlier self-portrayal as an apolitical woman and writer.

Space, Consciousness, and Gender in Colette
Colette\u27s desire, to reveal the different levels of difficulties in relationships, results in the creation of three masterpieces, L e Ble en Herbe, La Chatte, and La Vagabonde. Through her characters in these novels, the author exposes the spatial boundaries set by each couple. Also, she concentrates on the maturation of the protagonists. The woman\u27s function in society transforms as she gains personal power, and she becomes self-reliant. Finally, Colette evades sexual stereotyping by introducing the reader to the issues of gender and androgyny. She helps to dispel the sexual myths around the. idea of normal stereotyping. Themes such as male and female physical characteristics and related socially acceptable behaviors are addressed. In general, these works clarify ideas about the way in which individuals associate with one other. Chapter I will analyze the spatial limitations created by the protagonists. It will examine two binary oppositions, in/out and dream-world/reality . The in/out opposition will focus on both physical and mental spaces, whereas the dream-world/reality opposition will magnify tangible and unreal spaces. This chapter\u27s objective is to demonstrate the uses of territorial boundaries and deduce their affects in relationships. Chapter II will investigate the association between Colette\u27s characters and the liberation of womankind. The aim is to examine the female characters\u27 growth in regard to the society around her. As well, obtaining personal power and the concept of empowerment is treated ~y studying the use of the female voice. This chapter will show a recurring theme of women overcoming the forces of patriarchy and moving beyond the confines of societal rules. Chapter III will study the issue of gender and androgyny in Colette\u27s characters. It will bring to light Colette\u27s use of gender roles, and the way in which her protagonists search out an identity and learn about themselves. Finally, this chapter will cover gender stereotypes and Colette\u27s contemporary view of such an issue. In summary, the novels to be treated, Le Ble en Herbe, La Chatte, and La Vagabonde, will move through three different levels of development in the growth of the characters, from adolescence through young adulthood and into maturity. This notion will be utilized in each chapter and will demonstrate Colette\u27s theme of relationships which spirals out of three connected ideas, space, consciousness and gender
Real life
Colette Paul's story explores, in a humorous way, how the stuff of `real life' is transformed by the writer into `material' for fiction. It also address some anxieties about teaching Creative Writing. However, while these concerns frame `Real life' as explicitly metafictional, the way in which class politics are engaged with is of equal importance to the author
Reducing high school dropout: towards new narratives of educational success in a rural South African educational community.
Magister Educationis (Adult Learning and Global Change) - MEd(AL)This study sought to investigate the professional experiences of educators at a rural school in South Africa, and in particular pertaining to their perceptions on learner dropout or voluntary withdrawal. Within an interpretive framework as a qualitative case study, educators were invited to offer their narrative accounts particularly about the kinds of professional development they perceived as educationally most useful for learners to succeed at school. Secondly, the study investigated the extent to which an ethos of lifelong learning could play a role in promoting successful outcomes for educators and learners, specifically in a rural educational community. The study also probed the extent to which community-school partnerships might assist in actualizing sustainable supportive environments for teaching and learning to flourish particularly in rural school contexts. Findings revealed important insights regarding the extent to which educators may understand the importance of their own professional identity and development in relation to new forms of lifelong learning as dispositions towards reducing dropout in the rural educational contexts they know. Findings also shed light on the extent to which lifelong learning within community-school partnerships and extended educational communities may play a role in reducing dropout in the rural educational contexts described in this study. The most significant finding of the study is that lifelong learning might take root in certain rural South African schools only if a body teachers is sufficiently curious about new ways of teaching and learning that directly addresses reducing dropout in the educational contexts they know
