Local density of states in metal-topological superconductor hybrid systems

    No full text
We study by means of the recursive Green’s function technique the local density of states of (finite and semi-infinite) multiband spin-orbit-coupled semiconducting nanowires in proximity to an s-wave superconductor and attached to normal-metal electrodes. When the nanowire is coupled to a normal electrode, the zero-energy peak, corresponding to the Majorana state in the topological phase, broadens with increasing transmission between the wire and the leads, eventually disappearing for ideal interfaces. Interestingly, for a finite transmission a peak is present also in the normal electrode, even though it has a smaller amplitude and broadens more rapidly with the strength of the coupling. Unpaired Majorana states can survive close to a topological phase transition even when the number of open channels (defined in the absence of superconductivity) is even. We finally study the Andreev-bound-state spectrum in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions and find that in multiband nanowires the distinction between topologically trivial and nontrivial systems based on the number of zero-energy crossings is preserved

Education and Transition to Work: Promoting Practical Intelligence

    No full text
This paper considers a number of questions in the current discussion on the transition to work, most notably the definition of the pedagogical approach by which the issues at hand are investigated, the review of the relationship between education and development in reference to employability, and the interpretation of the right to education in light of the precarious nature of the productive processes. This contribution also points to the relevance of the notion of “human development” as explored by Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Politics and Philosophy at the University of Chicago, and Amartya Sen, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. It ends with a reflection on a welfare model supported by people empowerment that enhances individual capability. The argument put forward is that major shortcomings can be found in welfare systems in terms of employability. Against this background, the author welcomes a system which enables the full development of one’s capability. In this sense, social scientists should engage in pursuing new avenues for creativity in order to build a new approach to social responsibility. In other words, this means moving away from resignation and catastrophism which are peculiar to Nihilism, and being open to the full development of both the individual and social fabric to generate a common ethos. * Essays n° 6, Chapter Three: School-to-work Transition and Investment in Human Capital, pp. 385-408

Anomalous suppression of the shot noise in a nanoelectromechanical system

    No full text
In this paper we report a relaxation-induced suppression of the noise for a single level quantum dot coupled to an oscillator with incoherent dynamics in the sequential tunneling regime. It is shown that relaxation induces qualitative changes in the transport properties of the dot, depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling and on the applied voltage. In particular, critical thresholds in voltage and relaxation are found such that a suppression below 1/2 of the Fano factor is possible. Additionally, the current is either enhanced or suppressed by increasing relaxation, depending on bias being greater or smaller than the above threshold. These results exist for any strength of the electron-phonon coupling and are confirmed by a four states toy model

Novel MF-TDMA/SCPC switching algorithm for DVB-RCS/RCS2 return link in railway scenario

    No full text
This work focuses on the return channel resource allocation in the DVB-RCS/RCS2 system for mobile terminals. A continuous carrier (CC) operation mode based on DVB-S2/S2X is considered and investigated. The paper focuses on the possibility of transmitting simultaneously in multifrequency-time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) or single channel per carrier (SCPC) medium access techniques, as suggested by a previous DVB-RCS+M standard. The introduction of this capability has also been analyzed for a new DVB-RCS2 standard that gives the possibility of using both return link (RL) modalities. Moreover, we propose a detailed study of the RL channel in a satellite platform in order to understand the operative range of SCPC and MF-TDMA techniques. The contribution seeks to provide some threshold indications to network operators for dynamically managing satellite resources. We considered the railway market, which is characterized by an N-LOS condition due to blockage caused by tunnels, vegetation, and buildings, as the reference scenario. Furthermore, we introduced a transparent gap filler (GF) solution to overcome this issue. Simulation campaigns are shown, in order to give satellite operators some guidelines, when they want to make use of this hybrid channel modality

Dynamics of a SQUID ratchet coupled to a nanomechanical resonator

    No full text
We investigate the dynamics of a superconducting rectifying circuit, namely, a three-junction superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), where one arm of the superconducting loop consists of a nanomechanical resonator. We find that the dc characteristic curve of the system displays features that are directly related to the frequency and amplitude of the mechanical oscillations; these effects can be further enhanced by biasing the SQUID with an ac current. We discuss potential future developments of this idea in the field of ultrasensitive position detection, and assess their feasibility in current setup

La trasformazione urbana di Tokyo attraverso i mega eventi: Il caso delle Olimpiadi

The Urban Transformation of Tokyo through Mega Events: the Case of the Olympic Games Until the 1960s, the urban expansion of Tokyo was not overseen by any actual urban planning system but rather by an independent development surrounding the railway network and the train stations. Recently, and in view of what were supposed to be the 2020 Olympic Games, which have been postponed until 2021 as a consequence of the Covid–19 pandemic, numerous urban requalification interventions have been planned that go beyond those strictly linked to the performance of the games. These projects include building infrastructure within the transportation system in the metropolitan area. Today, talking of mega sports events means dealing with the changes that have put the area in the forefront over the past decades and analysing its urban changes. We will reflect here on the forms of urban requalification that are driven by constructing sports installations and redefining public transport lines.
