Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Dynamics of common dolphin foraging seascapes in the Bay of Biscay, based on abundance, size and energy of small pelagic fish
No full textEnergy is a fundamental currency linking physiological processes, population dynamics, and ecosystem functioning. In the Bay of Biscay, where common dolphin bycatch has sharply increased in recent years, global change is disrupting these energetic pathways, with potential cascading effects from prey to predators. Small pelagic fish (SPF) such as sardine and anchovy, key vectors of energy to higher trophic levels, have experienced marked declines in size and condition over the last two decades, potentially reducing their energetic profitability for top predators. In a first part of my PhD., we aimed to derive indicators of the energy content of SPF individuals. Using an extensive dataset of proximate composition and energy density, we identified consistent biochemical relationships between water, lipid, and protein contents in sardine and anchovy, allowing the definition of distinct condition states that reflect the differential use of energetic reserves. Water content emerged as a powerful and cost-effective proxy of the energy density, enabling the routine assessment of energetic condition in wild fish populations. In a second part of my PhD., we built the foraging seascape of common dolphin in the Bay of Biscay. First, by integrating data on SPF distribution, abundance, size, and energy content from longterm acoustic surveys, we reconstructed two decades of prey energy seascapes. Results revealed a decrease in the per-prey energy, mainly driven by smaller and leaner individuals, as well as a spatial redistribution of energy resources. Second, when translated into predator foraging terms, these changes have led to a reduced prey profitability and an increased foraging effort for common dolphins. Such energetic constraints may have influenced dolphin foraging behavior in space and time, potentially contributing to the recent rise in bycatch through increased overlap with coastal fishing grounds. Overall, this work underscores the importance of using energy as a unifying framework across biological scales to better understand the cascading impacts of global change on marine food webs and to inform ecosystem-based managementL’énergie constitue une monnaie fondamentale reliant les processus physiologiques, la dynamique des populations et le fonctionnement des écosystèmes. Les petits poissons pélagiques (PPP), tels que sardine et anchois, vecteurs clés d’énergie vers les niveaux trophiques supérieurs, ont connu un déclin marqué de leur taille et de leur condition, réduisant leur rentabilité énergétique pour les prédateurs. Dans une première partie de ma thèse, nous avons établi des indicateurs du contenu énergétique des PPP. En utilisant une vaste base de données sur la composition proximale et la densité énergétique, nous avons identifié des relations entre eau, lipides et protéines, permettant de définir des états de condition reflétant l’usage différentiel des réserves énergétiques. La teneur en eau s’est révélée un proxy puissant de la densité énergétique, permettant l’évaluation routinière de la condition des poissons. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons construit les paysages alimentaires du dauphin commun. En intégrant distribution, abondance, taille et contenu énergétique des PPP issus de campagnes acoustiques, nous avons reconstruit deux décennies de paysages énergétiques. Les résultats montrent une diminution de l’énergie par individu, surtout due à des poissons plus petits et moins gras, ainsi qu’une redistribution spatiale des ressources. Ces changements ont réduit la rentabilité des proies et augmenté l’effort alimentaire des dauphins. Ces contraintes ont probablement influencé leur comportement dans l’espace et le temps, contribuant potentiellement à l’augmentation des captures accidentelles par chevauchement avec les zones de pêche. Globalement, ce travail souligne l’importance d’utiliser l’énergie comme cadre unificateur à travers les échelles biologiques pour mieux comprendre les impacts en cascade du changement global sur les réseaux trophiques marins et informer la gestion écosystémique
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
