Moisture absorption and diffusivity of epoxy filled layered-structure nanocomposite

    No full text
This paper studies moisture absorption and diffusivity of epoxy reinforced layered structure nanocomposites and its effect on fracture toughness. Two different types of layered fillers employed in the study were clay and graphene platelets, in which both surface layers were unmodified and modified by characterized by swelling analysis and fracture toughness measurement. The outcomes surfactant. The nanocomposites were showed that the moisture absorption and diffusivity decreased with the addition of layered fillers. It was found that the modified graphene platelets and clay outperformed the unmodified layers and neat epoxy in terms of reduction of moisture absorption and diffusivity. The modified graphene platelets reduced the moisture uptake and diffusivity about 30% and 33%, respectively compare to neat epoxy, thus indicates its outstanding performance in barrier applications. However, once the nanocomposites were swelling in the water for 5 days, it is noticed that the fracture toughness of nanocomposites were reduced significantly about 35% in average. Nevertheless, the modified graphene platelets still display the better performance compare to the other samples although there was reduction of fracture toughness

A content validity: organisational performance’s assessment instrument in the construction industry / Khairul Firdaus Anuar, Nurhaizan Mohd Zainudin and Muhammad Ashraf Fauzi

    No full text
Evaluating the performance of construction organisations is crucial for the success of construction projects. However, there are no standardised instruments and a single way to measure how well construction organisations perform, making it difficult for researchers and practitioners to get a clear picture of their performance. This study aims to validate an instrument for assessing the organisational performances of construction organisations through content validity. A panel of eight (8) experts reviewed the instrument, rating the relevance of each item to the concept of organisational performance. The Content Validity Ratio (CVR) results showed that twenty-one (21) of fifty-two (52) items were considered the most critical by the content experts, and the results for the Item Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) showed that forty-six (46) items were considered appropriate. These findings demonstrate that the instrument has adequate content validity. The outcomes of this study have important implications for the use of this instrument in organisational performance assessment for the construction industry. The instrument can be used to measure construction organisational performance comprehensively and systematically. This will help researchers and practitioners better understand the factors that contribute to performance and develop interventions to improve it

University rankings: A review of methodological flaws

    No full text
University rankings have gradually become an issue for concern in the academic community worldwide. Several mechanisms with different methodologies have been developed to rank the universities appropriately. However, some ranking tools have notable issues, especially with the indicators adopted. Some are based merely on research performance, whilst others have focused solely on specific fields, such as science and technology - which could have deprived those in the arts and social sciences. This paper uses a narrative review to highlight a number of inconsistencies in the methodologies applied to rank universities. Five main ranking tools commonly applied to the world's universities are reviewed, namely Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Leiden University ranking and Webometrics ranking. We found that several flaws in the rankings caused inconsistencies in university placings in different rankings. Suggestions for integrating multiple criteria and indicators for better ranking exercises are proposed

Dark tourism: a bibliometric review of the past, present and future trends

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to critically review the knowledge structure of dark tourism. It is an emerging tourism attraction, but one that has received less attention in the literature. The fundamental difference between dark tourism and other forms of tourism is the deeply rooted association with death and mortality, which is considered a distinctive element of the tourist attraction. Despite the role that gloom tourism plays in the economic development of tourism, its function as an economic resource for the local community needs to be further explored and evaluated. With this in mind, this study conducts a science mapping based on a bibliometric analysis to uncover the knowledge structure of the phenomenon based on recognized publications in the field. Methodology/Design/Approach – Drawing from the opportunity of dark tourism, this paper analyzes the knowledge structure based on two bibliometric analyses to uncover the past, present and future trends in dark tourism. 592 journal publications were extracted and analyzed from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database. Findings – The results indicate that the clusters that emerged from the analyzes focus on the foundations of dark tourism, motivations for visiting dark sites, and specific interest in war/ battlefield tourism. This research shows that dark tourism benefits each segment of society in different ways by making it possible to experience the pain and suffering of the dead, the dark and agonizing events of past generations. Implications for theory and practice are discussed to further develop the field into a sustainable tourism segment. Originality of the research – This study provides the state-of-the-art knowledge structure analysis of the dark tourism phenomenon

Vertical Sundial from the Madrasa of al-Ashraf Inal (No. 158) on Cairo Northern Necropolis

The primary goal of this paper is a detailed publication of the little known mizwala munharifa (vertical sundial), still preserved on the madrasa belonging to the funerary complex of the Sultan Al-Ashraf Inal (no. 158), on the so-called Cairo North Cemetery. This sundial, dating back to Rabi I, year 871 [AH] – i.e. 11.10.-09.11.1466 AD – is a work of the otherwise unknown ‘poor Hassan al-Tayybi’, pupil of the famous mathematician and astronomer (and a longtime muwaqqit of the Al-Azhar) Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ġazal, widely known as Badr or Sibt al-Din al-Mar[i]dini (AD 1423–1506). Further on, comparing the mizwala in question with two other sundials preserved in the city center, author attempts to approach the function and role this instrument might have played within the social context of the local population inhabiting the north-east Cairo suburbs (Cairo ‘fuori le mura’, the ‘North Cemetery’ included) – dominated, by the end of the mamluk period, by numerous sufi communities

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive review of e-learning in higher education institutions (HEIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study presents current research issues and future progress in HEIs e-learning in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2020 through the Web of Science (WOS) database. The analysis comprises citation analysis, co-citation analysis, and co-occurrence of keyword analysis. This bibliometric review provides essential insight for researchers to identify the most influential publications and determine the fundamental structure. Furthermore, this review facilitates future studies on the influential research trends and emerging topics. Findings present several streams of discussion based on the clusters identified from the three analyses. Subsequently, the theoretical and methodological implications on the emergence of new sub-fields and interesting future works in connection with e-learning in HEIs are presented. The outcome would aid scholars and practitioners in advancing the technology and aid towards e-learning in HEIs to ensure students' education can be sustained in the state of emergency

Social media in disaster management: review of the literature and future trends through bibliometric analysis

    No full text
This study provides a science map on social media application in disaster management through bibliometric analysis. Citation, co-citation, and co-words analysis were applied to identify influential social media publications in disaster management, evaluate the prospective evolution of social media and disaster management themes, and predict future research streams based on social media in disaster management. 862 journal publications were retrieved from the Web of Science, with 33,758 cited references. From the co-citation analysis, 3 clusters were classified: (1) Twitter in disaster management, (2) post-disaster recovery process, and (3) information and knowledge sharing, while the co-word analysis also produced 3 clusters (1) social media communication in disaster events, (2) social media and disaster preparedness, and (3) social media and disaster recovery. Furthermore, three research streams were discussed through inductive interpretation from the three analyses performed. This study provides theoretical and practical understanding to relevant stakeholders facing disaster through social media applications
