    Waste Corn Husk Fibers for Sound Absorption Applications

    This study explores the acoustic absorption and thermal insulation properties of corn husk fiber (CHF) as a sustainable construction material. The results show impressive noise reduction coefficients (0.36-0.60) and effective thermal conductivities (0.038-0.042) for CHF. Notably, CHF's thermal insulation remains unaffected by moisture content. The research employs the Dunn and Davern (DD) model and an optimized DD model using the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm, with the latter providing highly accurate acoustic predictions. These findings highlight the potential of CHF as an eco-friendly and efficient material for sound absorption and thermal insulation in construction

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Added value of information and information systems: A conceptual approach

    Purpose – Information, owing to its nature, has numerous capabilities. Through utilizing these capabilities, information systems can add to the value of information. The purpose of this paper is to explain where and how added value emerges from the work processes in library and information professions. Design/methodology/approach – The paper begins with a review of the related literature and then takes a conceptual approach to discuss different values of information and IR systems; elaborates on how each of the processes such as assessment of needs, selection, description/organization, storage/processing, search/retrieval, and dissemination generate capabilities that lead to added value. Findings – The paper identifies that added value is generated through processes such as reproduction, exchange, transfer, refinement, analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and regeneration of information. Many such processes turn information into knowledge. Research limitations/implications – This paper is based on the author's reflections on the matter of added value generated by library and information practice. Further empirical studies are needed to substantiate the extent to which such values are generated through information systems and services in the real world. Practical implications – Librarians and information specialists can find through their working practice how to design systems and services which can generate added value for information. Originality/value – In the present evolving conditions, library and information professionals are able to add to the value of information by sharing their knowledge with the expertise of computer scientists and finding a variety of ways and up-to-date methods of optimizing existing systems, as well as designing new systems. These are the two strategies along which the profession should guide its educational, research and practical endeavors

    Chemical Characterization of the Essential Oil Compositions from Iranian Populations of Hypericum perforatum L.

    Hypericum perforatum L. (St. Johns’ wort) is the most commercially important species of the genusHypericum and contains a wide range of components including naphthodianthrones, phloroglucinols,tannins, xanthones, phenolic acids and essential oil. In the present study, for the first time the varia-tion of the essential oil compositions among 10 wild populations of H. perforatum growing in Iran wasassessed. According to the GC-FID and GC–MS analyses, a total of forty-six components were identifiedin 10 H. perforatum populations with relatively high variation in their composition. Among chemicals,2,6-dimethyl-heptane (6.25–36.07%), ̨-pinene (5.56–26.03%), ı-cadinene (0.0–22.58%) and -cadinene(0.0–16.9%) were found as the most abundant compounds in their essential oils. The higher amounts ofthis components were identified in the oil of Azadshahr, Kharw, Nor and Mashhad populations, respec-tively. Cluster analysis grouped the studied populations into four different chemotypes: chemotype I(ı-cadinene/ ̨-humulene), chemotype II ( ̨-pinene), chemotype III (-cadinene) and chemotype IV (2,6-dimethyl-heptane/ ̨-pinene). In fact, local abiotic factors such as moisture, temperature, topography,edaphic and/or biotic selective factors (associated fauna and flora) act on loci of the terpene-biosynthesispathways and contribute to the emergence of different chemical oil profiles. Intraspecific variation in thechemical profile of the Iranian populations provided possibility of selection of those with specific aromasor chemical profiles accompanied with biological document, being of interest at industrial level. Obtainedresults provided new insight for Iranian H. perforatum germplasm to be used in breeding programs anddevelopment of effective conservation strategies

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    AACR2 and catalogue production technology: The relevance of cataloguing principles to the online environment

    More than thirty five years have passed since the Paris Conference and cataloguers have witnessed profound changes in many aspects of catalogue production technology and also in bibliographic control and access during this period of time. In comparison to the past, cataloguers are less involved in the design and production of catalogues and bibliographic databases particularly in terms of the interfaces, the types of indexes and the ways in which records and retrieval results are displayed. These changes and developments (see Appendix one) have presented cataloguers with some basic questions about the fundamental principles of record creation and catalogue construction. Although present online catalogues are benefiting from more advanced hardware and software, there are still considerable, serious problems in searching, retrieval, and display of bibliographic information in present systems, which influence their functions and usefulness. This, as has been highlighted in the literature, may be because some of the present cataloguing principles and rules are inadequate, less relevant or irrelevant to the new electronic environment. A review of the literature of the last two decades indicates that, parallel to the increasing developments in online catalogues, the cataloguing community has been addressing the need for a re-thinking of cataloguing principles and rules in light of the new environment. It is often claimed that AACR2’s rules are based on concepts and principles from the pre-machine period and that they do not serve us well in giving guidance in the construction of electronic catalogues. Given the influence of all the changes and developments in the world of catalogues and cataloguing, a fundamental re-examination of our cataloguing principles seems very necessary. In this paper some of the basic principles of AACR2 which have been highlighted in the literature as those most likely to be influenced by the new technology will be re-examined in the light of both the present and the potential characteristics and capabilities of the online environment. The aim is to examine the extent to which AACR2 matches or fails to match the capabilities of present systems and those of the near future, for searching, retrieval and display of bibliographic information. In other words, to address how catalogue form and production affects, or is in turn influenced by, the principles upon which AACR2 is based. The approach used in this paper is to match individual capabilities of online catalogues with the basic principles of AACR2R. A major focus will be the basic concepts of the code’s principles, the logic of their application and the relationship of these principles to the logic of the online catalogue, as well as an examination of the types of principles and rules that are likely to change when moving from a manual catalogue to an online catalogue. In this regard, the needs and expectations of the different catalogue users are also taken into consideration
