Recent trends in analytical methods for water-soluble vitamins
In this review, recent advances in the analysis of water-soluble vitamins (WSVs) have been reported considering the advantages and disadvantages of various extraction, separation and detection techniques, commonly used for their quantification. Acid hydrolysis, enzyme treatment, SPE based methods and some other extraction methods have been discussed. Particular attention has been devoted to the analytical techniques based on liquid chromatography and electrophoresis. Furthermore, suitability and selectivity of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) for WSVs has been discussed in detail. Problems related to these techniques and their possible solutions have also been considered. Special focus has been given to the applications of liquid chromatography (since 2014-2019) for the simultaneous analysis of WSVs and their homologous in complex food samples
Active substances of fat-soluble vitamins: Advances in extraction and analysis approaches
Fat-soluble vitamins (FSVs) occur in various active forms, each of which exhibits the biological activity of the respective vitamin and performs the same metabolic functions within the body. The accurate determination of these compounds in food, biological, and pharmaceutical samples is significant for food labeling, treatment/diagnosis of hypo/hypervitaminosis, pharmacological research, and quality supervision of food/drug. In this review, the most recent advances in extraction and chromatographic methods to evaluate active forms of FSVs in various matrices have been discussed and compared. Owing to the recent research trends in the multiform vitamin assay, particular attention was devoted to the newly established extraction and analytical approaches allowing the simultaneous isolation, separation, and detection of multiple FSV compounds, considering the challenges and their potential solutions. The suitability and specificity of multi-dimensional chromatography based approaches for FSV substances have been illustrated in detail. Analytical challenges related to mass spectrometry detection of FSV substances have also been briefly discussed
Tracing historical changes, degradation, and original sources of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Jilin Province, China, by Abies holophylla and Pinus tabuliformis needle leaves
Due to their wide distribution and availability, plant leaves can be considered interesting candidates as biomonitoring substrates for the evaluation of atmospheric pollution. In addition, some species can also retain historical information, for example, related to environmental pollution, due to their leaf class age. In this study, the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Abies holophylla and Pinus tabuliformis needle samples in the function of their class age has been investigated to obtain information regarding the degradation constant for each PAH under investigation (α values ranging from 0.173 to 1.870) and to evaluate the possibility to correlate the presence of PAHs in needles with some important pollution environmental factors. Considering air pollutant variables registered in Jilin Province, interesting correlations (at 95% confidence level) have been found between coal consumption per year and anthracene contents in needles, while fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene results correlated with coal consumption. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the total PAH concentration in needles, for both species, increased with their age (from 804 to 3604 ng g-1 dry weight), showing a general tendency to accumulate these substances through years. PAH degradation rates increased instead with molecular complexity. This study could be considered a first trial to obtain historical environmental information by pine needles biomonitoring
Untargeted volatolomic approach for the identification of sensory quality markers of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce stored in modified atmosphere packaging
Fresh-cut iceberg lettuce is appreciated by consumers for its nutritive properties, convenience, and ease of use. Producers are then pushed to preserve the quality of these products by using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). In this study, the influence of passive MAP (air) or active MAP (1-5 % O2), on several quality attributes of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce samples was evaluated during storage time (from 3 to 14 d) at 4 degrees C. The respiration rate and the electrolyte leakage values of samples packaged in active MAP were higher than those of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce stored in the air, indicating stressful storage conditions. Inverse trends were observed for O-quinones content and browning index until the end of the storage period. Sensory analysis highlighted that active MAP has preserved the visual quality, limiting the browning of the cut surfaces. On the other hand, active MAP modified the sensory profile after 3 d at 4 degrees C, and samples scored below the marketability limit for both odor and off-odor. Finally, a volatile organic compound characterization by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) allowed the identification of target molecules that could signal a decrease in food quality under different conditions. A total of 118 compounds were identified and, among them, ethyl alcohol and acetaldehyde were identified as the best quality markers for passive MAP and active MAP samples, respectively, while ethyl acetate could represent a good compromise to assess the quality of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce, regardless of MAP conditions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
