Social Practices in the Commons
The regeneration of the commons occurs through direct involvement of groups of people who interact closely with spaces and who aim to improve the overall quality of life and experiences connected with those spaces. This process starts from an increased consciousness towards places that do not belong to the private realm but are public or can potentially be used by the civic society. Revealing the commons means being aware of the potentialities of these “hidden places” to not only connect people with them, but for people to also create a sense of community and owner- ship among themselves that was previously unknown. By showing best practices developed by the Polimi DESIS Lab in the city of Milan and its surroundings, this paper reveals: how design relates to this process; the relationship between the time of involvement and the effectiveness of the result; the short- and long-term impacts of these interventions; and the legacy of the regeneration, including both failures and successes

Designing proximity with situated stakeholders
Neighborhoods are becoming laboratories to test new ways to design the cities to solve social, environmental and cultural issues affecting global cities. The car-centered urban planning experienced in the 20th century has fostered researchers and practitioners to explore more the theme of livability and proximity. To trigger the blossoming of these models, a participatory process involving proactive networks of situated stakeholders is needed. This paper shows how competences from the academic realm can effectively boost civic awareness on the role that situated stakeholders have in producing solutions for their own wellbeing. It highlights a process enacted by the Polimi DESIS Lab with the community of Nolo (a neighborhood in Milan, Italy) with participatory design methods and tools. The research lab led two different activities to test a 3-phases strategy to explore the context and its feature, co-design new spatial (and social) solutions, and validate the results obtained

PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS WITH WEARABLE MOBILE MAPPING SYSTEMS AND UAV PHOTOGRAMMETRY
In cultural heritage, three-dimensional documentation of historic buildings is fundamental for conservation and valorisation projects. In recent years, the consolidated tools and methods: Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and close-range photogrammetry, have been joined by portable Mobile Mapping Systems (MMSs), which can offer significant advantages in terms of speed of survey operations at the price of reduced accuracy. The reduction of survey times and, therefore, costs makes the application of MMS techniques ideal for the preliminary stages of analysis of historical artifacts, when a rapid survey is indispensable for estimating the costs of conservation interventions. In this paper, we present a methodology for the expeditious survey of historic buildings and the surrounding urban fabric that is based on the use of an MMS and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The MMS is the Gexcel Heron MS Twin color. It was used to survey two architecture of interest and the urban context surrounding them from the ground level. The UAV is the DJI Mini 2, used to integrate the terrestrial survey by acquiring the buildings' roofs. The case study presented in the paper is the survey of San Clemente and San Zeno al Foro churches, two historic churches in the city centre of Brescia (Italy). The result are a complete point cloud of the two buildings and a metric virtual tour of all spaces. These results were made available to the architects through the Cintoo web platform to plan future activities.</p

System-Events Toolbox. Designing a System of Events that Relies on Local Resources to Create Urban Places for Social Cohesion
This chapter is a reflection on the use of public spaces in towns and the development of a system-events toolbox to make them places of social cohesion. It is the result of a 3-year action research developed together with POLIMI DESIS Lab of the Department of Design to develop design solutions to open up the public spaces of the campus to its surrounding neighborhood. The results have been tested in an event format called “il Sabato della Bovisa” held at the “Durando Campus” of the Politecnico di Milano. It presents a series of initiatives to understand, observe, and benefit designed by members of a public university to trigger a process of knowledge exchange between local residents and students in a climate of conviviality
