    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

A Raman fibre amplifier generating simultaneous gain across multiple Stokes orders by using step shaped optical pulses

    No full text
Optical amplification based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in optical fibres offers the potential to generate gain at any arbitrary wavelength with an appropriate pump source. This has proved a very effective and successful way of providing gain at those wavelengths not directly available with rare-earth doped fibres. However most of this success has been achieved using CW pump sources, but in recent years there has been renewed interest in the pulsed pumping of Raman amplifiers

Platinum-based drugs and proteins: reactivity and relevance to DNA adduct formation

    No full text
The mechanism of action of clinically used Pt-based drugs is through the formation of stable DNA adducts occurring at the nitrogen in position 7 of guanine (N7) and involving one or two spatially closed residues. Nevertheless, proteins can represent alternative targets since in particular sulfur groups, present in cysteine or methionine residues, can efficiently coordinate platinum. Here we have characterized the reactivity profile of cisplatin, transplatin and of two trans-platinum amine derivatives (TPAs) towards three different proteins, bovine α-lactalbumin (α-LA), hen egg lysozyme (LYS) and human serum albumin (HSA). Our results demonstrate that generally the tested metal complexes react with the selected target causing protein oligomerization, likely through a cross-linking reaction. Interestingly, the extent of such a process is largely modulated by the target protein and by the chemical features of the metal complex, TPAs being the most efficient platinating agents. From a structural point of view the resulting reaction products turned out to be depending on the nature of the metal complexes. However, in all instances, a transfer reaction of the metal complex to DNA can also occur, maintaining the relevance of nucleic acids as a biological target. These results can be used to better rationalize the different pharmacological profiles reported for cisplatin and TPAs and can help in designing more predictive SARs within the series

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    On Voevodsky and Farrell-Jones conjectures

    No full text
This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part we improve the Voevodsky nilpotence conjecture, a problem on algebraic geometry. In the second part we improve the Farrell- Jones isomorphism conjecture, a problem on algebraic topology. The Voevodsky nilpotence conjecture claims that the nilpotence and the numerical equivalence relations on the algebraic cycles of a smooth proper scheme agree. Bernardara- Marcolli-Tabuada generalized this problem to the setting of differential graded categories and showed that this conjecture holds for certain quadric fibrations, intersections of quadrics, linear sections of Grassmannians and of determinantal varietie and Moishezon manifolds. Later on, Ornaghi-Pertusi showed that the conjecture holds for cubic fourfolds and for Gushel-Mukai fourfolds. Working on this setting of differential graded categories, we refine these results by showing that the algebraic and the numerical equivalence relations also agree for those cases. Moreover, wework withquotients between equivalence relations. This allows us not only to obtain a refinement of the aforementioned results but also to compute, for example, the quotient between the rational and the algebraic equivalence relations of certain five-folds. These results lead to preprint [74]. The Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture is a local-to-global statement that claims that the algebraic -theory of a group ring , where stands for a commutative ring, is completely determined by the algebraic -theory of the group rings with a virtually cyclic subgroup of . This important conjecture simplifies the computation of the algebraic -theory of a group ring. Following the approach of Bunke-Kasprowski-Winges, we work on a generalized version of the Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture that is stated in the setting of ∞-categories. Using tools from the theory of noncommutative motives we were able to show that the Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture holds, under certain conditions, for finitary localising invariants. This result lead to the publication [75].Esta tese consiste em duas partes.
