    This letter, written October 1,1914, by an unknown author, is in response to a request by Mrs. Jamison for assistance in the women's suffrage movement in Ohio. The author describes her and her Suffrage Club's enthusiasm for helping Mrs. Jamison, and states her club could spare two or three women to travel but could not provide financial assistance. The author lets Mrs. Jamison know her availability for the month, and says she can spare a weekend off from her job as a probation officer. The author writes in the letter that she believes three days will be enough to garner passion among Ohio women for the suffrage movement. The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus.     Pathways to Adult Sexual Revictimization: Direct and Indirect Behavioral Risk Factors Across the Lifespan

    The purpose of this study is to investigate direct and indirect social and behavioral risk factors for adult sexual revictimization. Participants include 147 adult, predominantly African American (88%) women, 59% of whom had a documented history of child sexual abuse. Participants are interviewed in adulthood about adolescent and adult sexual victimization as well as other background and lifestyle characteristics. Structural equation modeling indicates that the relationship between child and adolescent sexual victimization is indirect, mediated by adolescent risk-taking behavior. The relationship between adolescent and adult sexual victimization is also indirect, mediated by risky sexual behavior. The residual effects of early childhood family environment and childhood physical abuse also indirectly predict sexual revictimization. Results provide empirical support for the general supposition that the relationship between child and adult sexual victimization is complex and that many intermediary factors differentially affect risk for a heightened vulnerability to sexual revictimization

    This book discusses the ways in which engineering educators are responding to the challenges that confront their profession. On the one hand, there is an overarching sustainability challenge: the need for engineers to relate to the problems brought to light in the debates about environmental protection, resource depletion, and climate change. There are also a range of societal challenges that are due to the permeation of science and technology into ever more areas of our societies and everyday lives, and finally, there are the intrinsic scientific and technological challenges stemming from the emergence of new fields of "technosciences" that mix science and technology in new combinations.In the book, the author discusses and exemplifies three contending response strategies on the part of engineers and engineering educators: a commercial strategy that links scientists and engineers into networks or systems of innovation; an academic strategy that reasserts the traditional values of science and engineering; and an integrative strategy that aims to combine scientific knowledge and engineering skills with cultural understanding and social responsibility by fostering what the author terms a "hybrid imagination."Professor Jamison combines scholarly analysis with personal reflections drawing on over forty years of experience as a humanist teaching science and engineering students about the broader social, political and cultural contexts of their fields.     BackgroundHealth-compromising behaviors in adolescents and adults co-occur. Because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for these age groups, understanding the association between risky driving and other health compromising behaviors is critical.MethodsWe performed a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial of an intervention for participants who screened positive for risky driving and problem drinking. Using baseline data, we examined relationships among conduct behavior problems before and after age 15, depressive symptoms, sleep, problem drinking, and risky driving (hostile, reckless and drinking and driving) in late adolescents ages 18\u201324 (n= 110) and adults ages 25\u201344 (n= 202). We developed a measurement model for the entire sample using confirmatory factor analysis, which was then specified as a multi-group structural equation model.ResultsLate adolescents and adults had some similar associations for pathways through problem drinking to drinking and driving; depression to reckless driving; and conduct behavior problems after 15 to hostile driving. Late adolescents, however, had more complex relationships: depressive symptoms and conduct behavior problems before 15 were associated with more risky driving behaviors through multiple pathways and males reported more risky driving.ConclusionsRisky driving is associated with other health-compromising behaviors and mental health factors. It is a multidimensional phenomenon more pronounced in late adolescence than adulthood.     An Empirical Taxonomy of Incarcerated Male Sexual Offenders Using Finite Mixture Modeling: Adult Victims

    The sexual victimization of women remains an endemic social, criminal, and public health problem. Much research has sought to identify risk and protective factors related to the sexual victimization of women so that prevention and intervention strategies can be more informed and targeted. Modern criminology has recognized the heterogeneous nature of many criminal behaviors in terms of their etiology, offender-, offense-, and victim-related characteristics. Such an approach has been labeled criminal profiling or criminal investigative analysis and yields richer information about the nature of crime than reliance on aggregate statistics (Hazelwood & Burgess, 2001). Knight (1999, p. 304) stated that understanding the taxometric structure of a deviant population is the ‘keystone to theory building and the cornerstone of intervention’. One area where our understanding of the heterogeneity of criminal behavior is lacking is the offenderoffense- victim triad in cases of sexual victimization. Marshall (1997) identified the reduction of heterogeneity among sexual offenders into manageable proportions as a priority research area.     Cooperative checkpointing for supercomputing systems

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 91-94).A system-level checkpointing mechanism, with global knowledge of the state and health of the machine, can improve performance and reliability by dynamically deciding when to skip checkpoint requests made by applications. This thesis presents such a technique, called cooperative checkpointing, and models its behavior as an online algorithm. Where C is the checkpoint overhead and I is the request interval, a worst-case analysis proves a lower bound of (2 + [C/I])-competitiveness for deterministic cooperative checkpointing algorithms, and proves that a number of simple algorithms meet this bound. Using an expected-case analysis, this thesis proves that an optimal periodic checkpointing algorithm that assumes an exponential failure distribution may be arbitrarily bad relative to an optimal cooperative checkpointing algorithm that permits a general failure distribution. Calculations suggest that, under realistic conditions, an application using cooperative checkpointing may make progress 4 times faster than one using periodic checkpointing. Finally, the thesis suggests an embodiment of cooperative checkpointing for a large-scale high performance computer system and presents the results of some preliminary simulations. These results show that, in extreme cases, cooperative checkpointing improved system utilization by more than 25%, reduced bounded slowdown by a factor of 9, while simultaneously reducing the amount of work lost due to failures by 30%. This thesis contributes a unique approach to providing large-scale system reliability through cooperative checkpointing, techniques for analyzing the approach, and blueprints for implementing it in practice.by Adam Jamison Oliner.M.Eng
