Linear morphometry and shell growth of the bivalve Tagelus plebeius as an indicator for salinity in Holocene South American estuaries
Holocene sea-level fluctuations have resulted in the formation of coastal features like barriers, coastal lagoons, tidal flats and marshes in the Argentinean coast (SW Atlantic). Estuarine regressive deposits represent good multi-proxy archives for reconstructing past environmental conditions. Particularly, articulated shells of the stout razor clam Tagelus plebeius in life position are reliable indicators of palaeoestuarine characteristics in Buenos Aires province. The objective of this study was to cross-match shell morphometry and growth from modern and fossil T. plebeius, in order to infer freshwater and marine water influence in palaeoestuaries along the Buenos Aires province. The results showed higher freshwater influence in most Holocene sites, between around 8000 and 6000 a BP. This tendency seemed modified after the Middle Holocene allowing the development of coastal lagoons with intermediate salinity. By adding a new perspective from an indicator, i.e. morphometry and growth (sclerochronology) of an estuarine species, this salinity reconstruction reinforces the previous findings related to Holocene sea level fluctuations in the Argentine coast.Fil: Addino, Mariana del Sol. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Beach fill experience in Honu Beach (Mar del Plata, Argentina)
In the province of Buenos Aires there are specific processes of erosion of beaches by multicausal origin. Among them, the insufficient amount of sand naturally contributed by sedimentation agents or the impact of storms, to which are added phenomena of anthropic origin such as urban development, installation of breakwaters, forestation and dune removal. The coast of the city of Mar del Plata is under a continuous erosion process since the '80s. In view of this, a variety of hard and soft solutions have been tested, with varying results. One of the solutions was the recovery of beaches through padding, but the source of the loan material must meet very specific conditions to be considered. Studies carried out in the area of the platform showed that there are no nearby sources of sand in the quantity and quality required. The objective of the present work was the evolutionary analysis of the geomorphology and sedimentology of the Beach of Honu Beach (38°05'21.60"S-57°32'30.94"W), before, during and after the filling, using sands from triturated quartzite produced in arid quarries of the region. For this purpose, a periodic monitoring was carried out through topoaltimetric surveys and surface sand sampling. The results enable to appreciate that the beach produced with crushing sand presented a greater firmness and relative stability that the beach of natural sand, that was not object of feeding. The 98% of the filling sand was lost during the monitoring year and after nineteen months, the 100% of the sand had been lost.Fil: Bertola, German Ricardo. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Shoreline change rates along Samborombón Bay, Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina
Samborombón Bay is an extensive microtidal wetland located in the outer Río de la Plata estuary. Shoreline change rates (erosion or accretion) were quantified at six control areas situated along the bay's coastal area. Digital Shoreline Analysis System 4.3 (DSAS) was used to process aerial photographs and high-resolution satellite images, aiming to quantify shoreline change. A larger ‘Total Period’ (the last 50 years) and a ’Recent Period’ (the last decade approximately) were considered for analyzing shoreline evolution. Erosion and accretion rates increased in five of the six control areas during the last decade. The alongshore (PlN) and the incident (Pi) wave energy fluxes were computed from numerical wave simulations. Highest mean annual Pi values were observed at the southern and northern sectors of the bay, and lower values were obtained at the center. Mean annual PlN shows a convergent pattern in Samborombón Bay. Some differences between adjacent locations regarding annual mean PlN were detected. These differences could generate a slight divergence in PlN, leading to mild coastal erosion. Pi presents generally positive trends along the bay. On the contrary, PlN only presents a significant trend in the southern part of the bay. Then, while the erosional capability (Pi) is increasing, transport capacity (PlN) is quite stable along the coastal area of the bay. Finally, the hydro-sedimentary processes at the coastal area of Samborombón Bay were interpreted by means of a simple conceptual model, which includes internal and external sources of sediments.Fil: Bacino, Guido Luis.
