    In recent years abnormally high levels of perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) have been detected both in surface and underground water sampled in an area covering approximately 150 square kilometers in the Veneto region (Italy) indicating the presence of a pollution point source (fluorochemicals production plant). Adsorption on granular activated carbon is an emergency measure which is poorly effective requiring frequent replacement. This work focuses on the application of three strong anion exchange resins (Purolite® A520E, A600E and A532E) for the removal of traces of PFOA, PFOS, PFBA and PFBS (concentration of hundreds of ng•L-1) from drinking water. This technology is attractive for the possibility of reusing resins after an in-situ regeneration step

    Emerged macrophytes to the rescue: Perfluoroalkyl acid removal from wastewater and spiked solutions

    This study evaluated the potential for three emergent aquatic macrophytes to remove perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from contaminated waters in constructed wetland systems. Three plants (Iris pseudacorus L., Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud., and Typha latifolia L.) were exposed to an effluent from a tannery wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that contained residual PFAAs, and to three spiked solutions with increasing concentrations of 11 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and three perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) (500, 2500, and 5000 ng L-1, each). Thirty-six lightweight expanded clay aggregate-and vegetation-filled tanks (0.35 x 0.56 x 0.31 m) were exposed to the tested solutions at the Acque del Chiampo SpA WWTP in Arzignano (NE Italy). Throughout the experiment, PFAA concentrations and physicochemical water parameters were monitored via measures of the clay material, plastic tank inner surfaces, and below-and above-ground biomasses (after harvest). Vegetation growth was shown to be unaffected by increased PFAA levels in the spiked solutions. Alternatively, total biomass was significantly reduced when WWTP water was used, although we attribute this finding to the relatively high salinity that mainly restricted Typha and Iris development. The tested macrophytes were found to remove a significant PFAA mass from the contaminated waters (36% to ca. 80%, on average) when Phragmites was subjected to the highest PFAA concentrations. Such large accumulations were primarily associated with long C-chain PFAA stabilization in belowground biomass (26%, on average). Most PFAA trans locations were observed in Typha, which accumulated mostly short perfluorinated C-chain PFBA, PFPeA, and PFHxA in the aboveground biomass (16%, on average). Despite some growth limitations, Iris was still the most efficient macrophyte for translocating PFBS under WWTP

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Plant species dominance over PFAAs in structuring bacterial communities and their functional profiles in treatment wetlands

    This study investigates the impact of different plant species (Iris pseudacorus L., Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud., Typha latifolia L.) and solutions containing increasing perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) concentrations (11 perfluorocarboxylic acids and three perfluorosulfonic acids, 500, 2500, and 5000 ng L−1, each) on bacterial communities in treatment wetland (TW) mesocosm systems. The aim was to rank the respective importance of plant species and pollutant concentration in shaping the structure of the selected bacterial communities. While microbial community structure was mainly a function of plant species, PFAAs had some effect on the predictable bacterial functional profiles. Among the tested species, Typha demonstrated exceptional versatility in supporting bacterial communities with enhanced nitrogen, sulfur, and organic compound metabolism, outperforming Iris and Phragmites. Different PFAA concentrations did not modify the overall taxonomical community structure, although they significantly altered the relative abundances of single functional groups. The observed variations in taxonomy-predictable functional groups highlighted the impact of PFAAs on specific plant bacteria, with potential implications also for the metabolism of other specific compounds. The study also identified distinct bacterial functional profiles associated with specific plant species, revealing that bacteria linked to Typha exhibited more specialized functions, while those associated with Phragmites qualified more within the generalist category. This suggests that Typha may be particularly suitable for TWs under PFAA-rich wastewaters, due to its ability to support the metabolism of organic compounds. Additionally, results indicated that phylum diversity may be used as a reliable proxy of functional diversity patterns. Overall, this study contributes to cast light on the intricate relationships between plant species, PFAA concentrations, and bacterial communities and their catabolic functions, which provides an exploitable advancement of knowledge for the optimization of treatment wetlands

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
