After having first interpreted Thomas Hobbes’ political philosophy as a paradigmatic example of a questionable individualistic humanism, Louis Althusser saw it as a prefiguration of the alternative materialist approach, grounded on contingency, which he developed in the last part of his work as a new reading of the Marxist tradition. The paper reconstructs and assesses this late retrospective appropriation of Hobbes’ political philosophy. Focusing on the central thesis according to which society is not an organism, but an encounter, it offers a symptomatic reading of it, by showing that it reveals a deeper aporia of Althusser’s “aleatory materialism” itself. The paper discusses the recognition theory elaborated by Lucio Cortella in his book: L’ethos del riconoscimento. Starting from the criticalities identified in that theory, the paper offers the outlines of an alternative theory. For Cortella, a good theory of the recognition relationship cannot conceive it as a simple intersubjective relationship: between the interacting subjects, a third instance must be introduced to act as a mediator. For Cortella, however, this third instance is reduced to a minimal ethics of a transcendental nature. After criticising this thesis, another is defended and developed. According to this other thesis, the third instance between interacting subjects must be conceived as a thick ethical background, which includes norms, customs, traditions, forms of relationships and institutions. The conclusion is that a good theory of recognition must be inscribed in a more complex theory of society in which the latter is not reduced to a multiplicity of interactions

The richest reflections devoted to cinema by Bernard Stiegler precede his elaboration of the concept of pharmacology. This paper, however, aims to reconstruct those reflections as a pharmacological examination of the art of film. Firstly, it is clarified what a pharmacological examination is for Stiegler. Much attention is devoted here to criticizing and proposing a possible correction of the normative assumptions of Stiegler’s theory. Secondly, the “neganthropic” potentialities that, according to Stiegler, cinema possesses even though today, for the most part, audiovisual technology has been taken over by capitalism, with the resulting toxic effects, are examined

In this article I reconstruct, discuss, and develop both the understanding of scientific practice and philosophy set forth by Pierpaolo Cesaroni in his book, La vita dei concetti. Hegel, Bachelard, Canguilhem. As regards the understanding of science, I focus on the investigation of the distinction between activity subjected to norms and activity elaborating norms. I also consider a number of connected issues, including the one relating to that particular form of necessity implied in the elaboration of a scientific concept. As to the understanding of philosophy, I distinguish the several intellectual performances which can be deemed as philosophical. The closing annex is devoted to the Althusserian conception of an authentic science of politics

This paper is devoted to the Althusserian theory of philosophy and in particular to the distinction between materialist and idealist philosophy. Materialist philosophy, for Althusser, is primarily that which accepts to operate at the back of the sciences rather than to occupy a foundational role in relation to scientific concepts and methods.In this article, however, two situations in which this relationship is complicated are examined: the first is given by the role that philosophy occupies in the foundation of a new science; the second concerns the status of epistemology between the sociology of science and philosophy. What is at stake more generally is to focus on the possible place of philosophy with respect to social science, that is, to knowledge dedicated to historical and practical reality
