Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club
MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director
THE IMPORTANCE OF FAN ENGAGEMENT AND FAN MANAGEMENT IN SPORTS
This investigation explores the current state of fan management and engagement in the sports management, and its growing importance within sports clubs as a driver of revenue. Among the different aspects embedded in sports organizations’ management, “fan experience” has become one of the most relevant and innovative concepts developed. In 1980s, ticketing represented 90% of the turnover; currently, ticketing accounts for between 15% and 20% of revenue. Revenue is now largely derived from other sources of entries: e.g. broadcasting, TV rights, sponsorship and commercial deals. Fan experience, in this scenario, arises as a new lever for sports clubs for diversifying and increasing revenues (establishing a direct relationship between fan engagement and revenues). Leveraging my position as Press Officer at Juventus FC, data was collected from interviews with experts in the industry, such as Francesco Campagna (Protocol Officer President Office at UEFA) and Mike Cragg (Athletic Director at St John’s University), and a survey completed by more than 100 sports fans. The results point to a positive impact from managing fan engagement on financial outcomes for sports teams
Late Quaternary alluvial fans, debris cones and talus cones in the Grampian Highlands, Scotland
Alluvial fans, debris cones and rockfall talus cones
are widespread in upland Britain, but remarkably little is
known about their characteristics, development and
significance. This research project has three main
objectives:
1. to establish the morphological and surface sedimentary
characteristics of alluvial fans, debris cones and talus
cones in the Grampian Highlands of Scotland;
2. to identify the factors that have controlled their
formation and distribution; and
3. to determine the timing, nature and rate of fan- and
cone-forming processes.
On the basis of previous literature, an Orioni model
that describes a continuum of fan and cone morphological and
surface sedimentary properties was devised. The
applicability of this model was tested using data for six
variables (long profile gradient, slope form, downslope
changes in clast size, roundness and form, and a scale ratio
of maximum clast size to total fan or cone length) obtained
for fans and cones in the Grampian Highlands and the Lyngen
Peninsula in Northern Norway. The results of these tests
were then used to produce a modified model appropriate to
fans and cones in upland Britain.
Using a combination of map, field and aerial photograph
data, several environmental and morphometric controls on the
distribution and type of fan and cone development were
investigated. The dimensions of different types of fan and
cone are shown to be determined by basin morphometry,
lithology and glacial history. Discriminant analysis
identified basin gradient, basin width and basin height as
the principal catchment properties that influence the
dominant type of fan- or cone-forming process.
Stratigraphic and radiocarbon evidence suggests that
many debris cones are essentially paraglacial landforms that
formed in the earlier part of the Flandrian. Many of these
cones have subsequently been modified in the late Flandrian
by fluvial processes, in some cases in response to
anthropogenic interference. However, evidence from one site
has also revealed that substantial debris cone aggradation
has occurred since c 300 BP, implying high rates of
denudation in the recent past at this site. The volumes of
other debris cones imply that as much as 1-3m of surface
lowering has occurred in gullies upslope since deglaciation.
Much lower values of surface lowering are associated with
alluvial fan development, suggesting that, locally at least,
denudation by fluvial processes has been less significant
than denudation resulting from debris flow

Assignment of Social Media at the fan management using example of FC St. Pauli
This Bachelor thesis deals with the commitment of Social Media, in the range of fan management from the FC ST. Pauli. It highlights the opportunity chances and risks, which occur due to the Social Network. At the beginning, in the big chapter Social Media, the author wants to point out the various Social Networks and their opportunities, chances and borders. The chapter fan management is about the opportunities of the fans as which chances they have and what aimes they can fulfill. Further, the author wants to take a deeper look into the fan scene and he also wants to define the difference between the dissimilar supporters. In the end, he examines the “Kiezclub” FC St. Pauli. Here, the author wants to focus special attention on the fans. The aim of this thesis is to show the impact of the Social Networks within sport
Sixty Years of Community: St. Olaf Catholic Parish in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 1952-2012
This paper will explore how the parish community of St. Olaf in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, established in 1952, reflects the Roman Catholic Church, specifically at the local, state, and national levels in the United States. It will also discuss the various changes that have occurred in the past 60 years of its history in terms of the various locations of worship for the members, the growth of the community outreach programs, and the effects of the Second Vatican Council. This ecumenical council was a meeting of Catholic bishops from around the whole that brought reform to the Catholic Church and affected the relationship of the Catholic Church to the world. The parish at St. Olaf has grown from having only 125 families in 1952 to over 1,000 families in 2012
Transient observations : the textualizing of St Helena through five hundred years of colonial discourse
This thesis explores the textualizing of the South Atlantic island of St Helena (a
British Overseas Territory) through an analysis of the relationship between
colonizing practices and the changing representations of the island and its
inhabitants in a range of colonial 'texts', including historiography, travel writing,
government papers, creative writing, and the fine arts.
Part I situates this thesis within a critical engagement with post-colonial
theory and colonial discourse analysis primarily, as well as with the recent
'linguistic turn' in anthropology and history. In place of post-colonialism's rather
monolithic approach to colonial experiences, I argue for a localised approach to
colonisation, which takes greater account of colonial praxis and of the continuous
re-negotiation and re-constitution of particular colonial situations.
Part II focuses on a number of literary issues by reviewing St Helena's
historiography and literature, and by investigating the range of narrative tropes
employed (largely by travellers) in the textualizing of St Helena, in particular
with respect to recurrent imaginings of the island in terms of an earthly Eden.
Part III examines the nature of colonial 'possession' by tracing the island's
gradual appropriation by the Portuguese, Dutch and English in the sixteenth and
early seventeenth century and the settlement policies pursued by the English
East India Company in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century.
Part IV provides an account of the changing perceptions, by visitors and
colonial officials alike, of the character of the island's inhabitants (from the late
eighteenth to the early twentieth century) and assesses the influence that these
perceptions have had on the administration of the island and the political status of
its inhabitants (in the mid- to late twentieth century).
Part V, the conclusion, reviews the principal arguments of my thesis by
addressing the political implications of post-colonial theory and of my own
research, while also indicating avenues for further research.
A localised and detailed exploration of colonial discourse over a period of
nearly five hundred years, and a close analysis of a consequently wide range of
colonial 'texts', has confirmed that although colonising practices and
representations are far from monolithic, in the case of St Helena their continuities
are of as much significance as their discontinuities

Fan Engagement and Experience: A Study into Perceptions of ARU Members
This study explored the various elements that influence fan participation in the game day experience. In particular the elements of stadium design and use from a fan perspective, as well as factors that inhibit or facilitate the fan experience were examined. Unlike previous research, the current study examined both tangible and intangible factors that influenced spectator satisfaction with sports matches, through eight scales; getting to and around the stadium, stadium aesthetics, entertainment, screens and scoreboards, seating, food and beverage, stadium atmosphere, and stadium management. 293 supporters of the Australian Rugby Union team on the ARU’s Wallabies 1st Gold membership database completed a primarily quantitative online survey
