Although its author was a legitimist who blamed the French Revolution on Enlightenment thought, the novel is largely based on Voltaire's play Le fanatisme, ou Mahomet le Prophete (1741). This study explores how Batz de Trenquelleon's critique of the Terror echoes Voltaire's denunciation of fanaticism and how she manipulates her historical sources to reinforce a vision of French history in which 1789 and 1830 are part of a single, ongoing conspiracy
The Fourth Invasion
Based on more than a decade of ethnographic research, The Fourth Invasion examines an Ixil Maya community’s movement against the construction of one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Guatemala. The arrival of the Palo Viejo hydroelectric plant (built by the Italian corporation Enel Green Power) to the municipality of Cotzal highlighted the ongoing violence inflicted on Ixils by outsiders and the Guatemalan state. Locals referred to the building of the hydroelectric plant as the “fourth invasion” for its similarity to preceding invasions: Spanish colonization, the creation of the plantation economy, and the state-led genocide during the Guatemalan armed conflict. Through a historical account of cyclical waves of invasions and resistance in Cotzal during the four invasions, Giovanni Batz argues that extractivist industries are a continuation of a colonial logic of extraction based on the displacement of Indigenous Peoples and the destruction of their territories and values that has existed since Spanish arrival in 1524.
“A wonderfully insightful and powerful book, which vividly captures the continuity of colonialism and the way the past presses on the future. I strongly recommend it.” — Greg Grandin, author of The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America
“This extraordinary, detailed account of Maya-Ixil framings of five hundred years of struggle is a remarkable achievement for the author and the Ixil communities with which he collaborates.”— Carlota McAllister, coeditor of War by Other Means: Aftermath in Post-Genocide Guatemala
“This brilliant book illuminates how Indigenous world-making ideas shape contemporary resistance to megaprojects. Its deep and careful collaboration with Mayan communities in Guatemala is a model for scholars and activists alike.” — Elizabeth Oglesby, coeditor of The Guatemala Reader: History, Culture, Politic

Route Planning with Breaks and Truck Driving Bans Using Time-Dependent Contraction Hierarchies
Mandatory breaks for truck drivers are nowadays scheduled after the route has been decided. However, in some cases it is beneficial to plan these breaks during waiting time caused by truck driving bans. Optimally planning a single break considering driving bans can be done using Dijkstra’s algorithm with multiple labels. This has large effects on predicted travel times: 17% of the analysed routes having a night rest obtain an earlier arrival time by 5 hours on average. However, the computation times of this algorithm are long. A novel heuristic version of time-dependent contraction hierarchies leads to significant reductions in computation times from several seconds to several milliseconds per route. Experiments show that the solutions are still optimal for a representative test set consisting of 10,000 route queries.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.AlgorithmicsTransport and Plannin

Time-dependent earliest arrival routes with drivers legislation and preferences
Freight transporters use software kits to plan the routes for their trucks. Breaks required by the European drivers legislation are nowadays planned as late as possible. However, in some cases it is beneficial to plan these mandatory breaks during waiting time, such as truck driving bans. In this thesis this problem is addressed by computing earliest arrival routes with optimal break planning. The problem is formulated and optimally solved as a variation of Dijkstra's algorithm. The slow Dijkstra computation times of several seconds per route are improved using time-dependent contraction hierachies, which enable a query time of several milliseconds per route while the solution quality remains good. For two days of driving with a night rest in between, 17% of the analysed routes improves with optimal break scheduling, resulting in an average improvement of 5 hours of driving time. If the taking of breaks is additionally restricted to parking lots, the influence on the arrival time is on average increased with only 3 minutes. However, 5% of the considered routes are not feasible any more due to absence of truck parking lots along the planned route. Another 15% of the routes face large changes in roads that should be taken. The planned routes are all optimized for having the earliest arrival time. However, the freight company's objective also concerns fuel optimized driving or providing reliable arrival times to the customer. This thesis analyses such preferences and combines them into a route planner that incorporates results of stated and revealed choice experiments. It is shown that generally toll avoidance and congestion avoidance have most influence on the route choice and arrival time. On average differences are small, but for some routes this leads to changes of up to 15% in travel time. This thesis analyses the problem of route planning from two perspectives: algorithmic and behavioural. Several observations are made: algorithms are not suitable for obtaining the best route instead of the fastest, and the output of behavioural research cannot be used directly in practice to compute preferred routes. Effort could be made in future to integrate both research communities such that algorithms are able to reflect what a freight transporter actually wants.Double Degree: Software Technology - Transport, Infrastructure and LogisticsTransport, Infrastructure and LogisticsComputer Science | Software Technolog
