Micro FT-IR mapping of superficial layers on Septimius Severus Arch (Rome, Forum): evaluation of spatial distribution of calcium oxalate films on cross-sections.
The Infrared mapping spectroscopy is a new analytical technique able to obtain the
characterization of both the composition and the spatial distribution on different layers of
organic and inorganic compounds in multilayered samples.
This technique is useful to study the alterations on the surfaces of monuments and aids
the comprehension about the processes of growth of superficial layers due to alteration
products of biological origin or residues of ancient conservation treatments.
The aim of our work was to study the calcium oxalate films on the Arch of Septimius
Severus (203 AD, Rome) in Roman Forum.
Micro-FTIR mapping was conducted on cross-sections, acquiring infrared spectra with
spatial information, rendered on chemical distribution maps for main constituents: calcium
oxalates, silicates, calcium sulphate and calcite. The reflectance spectra were collected by
a Bruker Optics VERTEX 70 Ft-IR Spectrofotometer, equipped with HYPERION 2000
microscope.
The analytical approach highlights the strong adherence of oxalates on the carbonatic
substrate. Moreover, the presence of past conservative treatments using silicatic
compounds was investigated by the silicate/oxalate ratios, in each point of analysis. A
stratification of layers based on oxalates, silicate compounds and gypsum was identified,
clarifying different compound distribution and contributing the comprehension of past
conservative practices on this monument
This contribution focuses on the collaboration between Anna Maria Ortese and the independent publisher Beppe Costa, who brought the author back into the publishing market in the 1980s after years of absence. It draws on a selection of unpublished letters written by Ortese to Costa between 1985 and 1986, a period of intense collaboration between the two. The letters highlight their common poetics and reveal their capacity for resilience in the face of the difficulties of everyday life and the literary market
Exposure-Tolerant Imaging Solution forCultural Heritage Monitoring
This paper describes a simple and cheap solution specifically designed for monitoring the degradation of thin coatings employed for metal protection. The proposed solution employs a commercial photocamera and a frequency-domain-based approach that is capable of highlighting the surface uniformity changes due to initial corrosion. Even though the proposed solution is specifically designed to monitor the long-time performance of protective coatings employed for the restoration of silver artifacts, it can be successfully used also for assessing the conservation state of other ancient metallic works of art. The proposed solution is made tolerant to exposure changes by using a procedure for sensor nonlinearity identification and correction, does not require a precise lighting control, and employs only free open-source software, so that its overall cost is very low and can be used also by not specifically trained operator

This contribution aims to illustrate some affinities between two Swiss-German writers from two different literary periods: Christian Kracht, a contemporary author particularly appreciated by critics, and Robert Walser, an eclectic writer of the Moderne. After a brief analysis of Kracht’s relationship with his motherland and its culture, the paper will move on to an examination of two ‘exemplary’ works by these authors – the novel Faserland and the ‘Prosastück’ Der Spaziergang –, focusing on highlighting evident similarities between these two texts and in general in the textual poetics and in the construction of authorial identity – in particular with regard to the Selbstinszenierung (self-staging) of the author both in fiction and reality – of these two Swiss writers
Clinical and in vitro efficacy of colistin plus vancomycin and rifampin against colistin-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii causing ventilator-associated pneumonia
We present the case of a patient with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by a pan-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii successfully treated with the combination colistin plus vancomycin plus rifampin, whose in vitro activity was investigated by checkerboard method and killing testing. Furthermore, the serum bactericidal activity (SBA) was assessed. Our case shows that an innovative regimen consisting of colistin plus antimicrobials active only against Gram-positive microorganisms might represent a valid therapeutic option for severe infections caused by colistin-resistant A. baumannii
