    American mink: a new invader of Rio Negro, Argentine Patagonia

    El visón americano (Neovison vison) es el carnívoro exótico invasor de mayor distribución en Patagonia. Basados en relevamientos de campo y archivos históricos se presenta información detallada sobre su actual distribución en 180 km del Río Negro. Este foco representa la distribución más noreste, un nuevo ambiente invadido (Monte Oriental) y una nueva provincia con poblaciones silvestres (Buenos Aires). Documentamos la existencia de un criadero en las ciudades de Carmen de Patagones y Viedma (1965-1974), que podría ser el origen de este foco. Recomendamos diseñar e implementar planes de monitoreo y control de manera urgente.American mink (Neovison vison) is the most widespread invasive carnivore in Patagonia. Based on eld surveys and historical records, we present novel and detailed information of the American Mink present distribution along 180km of the Río Negro. This invasion nucleus represents the most northeastern area recorded for the species, a new invaded ecoregion (Monte Oriental) and a new province with wild populations (Buenos Aires). We document the existence of a fur farm located in Carmen de Patagones and Viedma cities (1965-1974) that may have originated this focus.     Hybridization between yellow-billed cardinal paroaria capitata and red-crested cardinal P. Coronata in southern Argentina

    The genus Paroaria is a group of conspicuous songbirds widely distributed in South America that has been studied recently to delimit its species and establish their phylogenetic relationships. Although hybridization has been reported between the most phylogenetically related species of the genus, we here present a case of hybridization between the Yellow-billed Cardinal (P. capitata) and Red-crested Cardinal (P. coronata) for the first time, two phylogenetically unrelated members of the group. Buenos Aires, Argentina.The Rio Negro estuary is considered the southernmost breeding and feeding area of the franciscana. Preliminary results of necropsies performed on six dead specimens found dead during 2020 are reported here. One calf, two juveniles/subadults and three adults were analyzed. Two of the adults died in gill nets. Macroparasites of Nematoda and Acantocephala phyla were found in the stomach inspections of four animals. Two dead specimens showed beak deviations which would represent the southernmost report of beak anomalies for the species throughout its range. Scattered granulomatous lesions compatible with mycobacteria was detected in one franciscana. Cultured samples of the whitish nodular lesions showed the development of acid-fast bacilli detection. In addition, molecular identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex was positive. This report will be the first case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in this cetacean. Based on the macroscopic lesions compatible with infectious diseases discovered here, it is necessary to extend the sanitary study of population of franciscana.

    New distributional records for bats of the Argentine Patagonia and the southernmost known record for a molossid bat in the world

    We add new localities to the distribution of bats of the families Molossidae and Vespertilionidae in south- ern Argentina. We report the southernmost known record for any bat species of the family Molossidae in the world, which corresponds to a locality in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz, for Tadarida brasiliensis. Also, new records of this species are added to the provinces of Chubut and Río Negro. Additionally, we provide new localities that extend the distribution of some species of Vespertilioni- dae, by adding Histiotus magellanicus and Lasiurus varius to Chubut, and new records for Histiotus montanus to Santa Cruz and for Myotis chiloensis to Chubut and Tierra del Fuego.Fil: Díaz, María Mónica.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

In the Argentinian Patagonia we studied nesting of a Chimango Caracara population that uses cavities built by psittacines in a unique ornithological assemblage: 12 km of sea cliffs with 37,000 active nests of Burrowing Parrots ( Cyanoliseus patagonus). For 56 days, we monitored 18 active Chimango Caracara nests (11 in 2014 and 7 in 2015). All nests contained plant material inside the hole s and had some structure to facilitate landing and perching (balconies, overhangs, or ledges). Most nests were located in the upper third of the cliff and had a single entrance. The average distance to the nearest nest was 108.9 m. We document in detail, for the first time, the n esting of Chimango Caracaras inside cavities. Our results document a new breeding substrate for this species and a nesting behavior unique among Falconidae, which can be interpreted as evidence of adaptability and plasticity of Chimango Caracaras.trueEl chimango (Milvago chimango) es el miembro más abundante de los ensambles de aves rapaces desde Paraguay y Bolivia hasta el extremo sur de Argentina.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
