Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Trazando el mapa genético de NGC 1316 a través de su sistema de cúmulos globulares
A pesar de que aún no se cuenta con un escenario definitivo que explique tanto la formación de los cúmulos globulares (CGs) como sus propiedades más significativas, se cree que estos objetos se originaron en los estallidos de formación estelar más intensos en la vida de las galaxias. Por otro lado, si bien en a actualidad se conocen casos de CGs jóvenes, es reconocido que la mayoría de ellos constituyen objetos antiguos con edades mayores a los diez mil millones de años. Debido a lo antes mencionado, sumado al hecho de que es posible observarlos a decenas de Mpc, los cúmulos globulares han jugado un rol importante en varios aspectos relacionados con el estudio de la evolución estelar y el enriquecimiento químico ocurrido durante los principales acontecimientos de la historia de ensamble de las galaxias, lo que los convierte en verdaderas reliquias de las primeras etapas de su formación. Una de las características más destacadas es el hecho de que en la gran mayoría de las galaxias masivas de tipo temprano, los sistemas de CGs presentan una distribución bimodal o multimodal en sus colores integrados. De acuerdo a las propiedades generales de los CGs antes mencionadas, esto estaría indicando la existencia de, por lo menos, dos subpoblaciones de CGs: los azules, o de menor contenido de metales, y los rojos, de relativamente mayor metalicidad. Esta bimodalidad en la composición química ha sido confirmada mediante estudios espectroscópicos en varias galaxias, lo que se traduciría en la existencia de, al menos, dos fases principales de formación estelar intensa en las galaxias anfitrionas. Si bien trabajos recientes evidencian la presencia de poblaciones estelares multiples en muchos CGs de nuestra galaxia, se debe destacar que los mismos continuan siendo una muy buena representación de lo que se denomina “Poblaciones estelares simples” (SSP, por sus siglas en Inglés) debido a que el efecto de la presencia de dichas subpoblaciones no son aún detectables empleando cantidades integradas. Estos aspectos simplifican significativamente la obtención de información y la determinación de sus edades y metalicidades con respecto al de las poblaciones estelares que constituyen la luz integrada de su galaxia anfitriona.
En este marco teórico la galaxia elíptica gigante NGC 1316, una de las radiofuentes más cercanas e intensas del hemisferio sur (Fornax A), aparece como un objeto particularmente atractivo. Por un lado, la galaxia presenta una serie de propiedades morfológicas en el espectro óptico que parecen ser las huellas digitales de una fusión de edad intermedia (∼3×E(9) años), entre las que se destacan un complejo sistema de cáscaras y una inusual estructura de polvo, integrada por largos filamentos y estructuras oscuras.
Por otro lado, la galaxia exhibe un prominente sistema de CGs, el cual posee una serie de características que lo distinguen del de otras galaxias elípticas “típicas”. Esta galaxia pertenece a Fornax, uno de los grupos de galaxias más cercanos y estudiados del Hemisferio sur. Partiendo de la idea de que los sistemas de cúmulos globulares constituyen auténticos trazadores de la formación y evolución de las galaxias que los contienen, en el presente trabajo de Tesis se exhibe una combinación de fotometría de alta calidad, con observaciones espectroscópicas de candidatos a cúmulos globulares asociados a dicha galaxia.
En una primera etapa, se llevó a cabo la reducción y el posterior análisis de un mosaico formado por ocho campos profundos, observados utilizando la cámara Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS), montada en el telescopio Gemini Sur, a través de los filtros g, r e i . Posteriormente, se realizó una cuidadosa fotometría de ajuste de “point spread function” (PSF), la cual fue utilizada para identificar la presencia de cuatro subpoblaciones de cúmulos estelares. Por un lado, se mostró que NGC 1316 posee los “clásicos” CGs denominados azules y rojos. Pero por otro, también se presentó evidencia clara de la existencia de una subpoblación dominate de edad intermedia. Adicionalmente, se presentaron indicios de la existencia de una cuarta subpoblación, posiblemente aún mas joven.
En una segunda etapa, se realizó un estudio espectroscópico de aproximadamente 40 candidatos a CG pertenecientes a NGC 1316, utilizando el modo multi-objeto de la cámara GMOS de Gemini Sur. Como resultado de la buena calidad de los datos, y de una detallada reducción, se obtuvieron espectros con una excelente relación señal-ruido (S/N) (alguno de ellos con S/N > 50). Esto permitió, a través de la medición de diferentes índices de Lick y su posterior comparación con modelos de poblaciones estelares simples (SSP), confirmar la presencia de subpoblaciones jóvenes, y determinar con errores relativamente bajos, metalicidades y abundancias de elementos α.
Finalmente, estos resultados fueron analizados en conjunto con datos y estudios presentes en la literatura, con el objetivo de describir los diferentes episodios de formación estelar y de esta manera delinear la historia evolutiva de NGC 1316.Doctor en AstronomíaUniversidad Nacional de La PlataFacultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica
