В. Fundamental Mathematics and Mechanics High Geometry Author investigated the presence of the inverse shadowing property for the actions of Baumslag-Solitar group. Group actions are considered to be the generalisation of classical dynamical system (such as cascades and flows). Inverse shadowing property means that any exact trajectory can be approximated with "pseudotrajectories" (there is a small error on the each iteration step). By the definition, the source of pseudotrajectories is some numerical method. Author proved that linear actions of Baumslag-Solitar group on R and R^2 do not have the inverse shadowing property. This is a new result in that area. Other authors investigated only usual shadowing property for this group. The bibliography contains 6 items. Fadeev A.V. Traditional magic or European occultism? Commercial fortune-telling and magic in post-Soviet Russia and their relationship to Russian tradition

    No full text
The article examines the vibrant commercial magic and fortune-telling industry in Russia today. Based on fieldwork in Petersburg conducted in 2006, supplemented by printed and, in particular, web material, it seeks to show that, despite the many similarities with its counterparts in Europe and North America, Russian fortune-telling and magic are clearly shaped by local traditions. In the context of the article, tradition is taken to include not just rural folk magic and divination, but also urban traditions of the late imperial period as well as those resulting from Soviet policies and practices. It emerges that as far as magic services are concerned, the range of services offered are those demanded by the client, largely stemming from folk tradition. By contrast discourse, approach and ritual often owe much to Western esoteric literature, and perhaps also to pre-Revolutionary occultism and the Soviet interest in psychics. In the case of fortune-telling, today’s professionals (gypsies apart) have adopted more complex and sophisticated ways of telling the future (tarot and astrology). Old ways of fortune-telling are so widely known that they must offer something different to clients. Tradition survives in many ways, sometimes transmuted, sometimes partial, but it makes the Russian magic and fortune-telling scene distinctive

    Circus of Tsarevich Aleksei Mikhailovich

The article focuses on the «German potekhi» (entertaiments), played in the Muscovite court during the 1630s. These entertainments resembled circus performances. They were based on rope acrobatics. The principal changes leading to a new phenomenon in the Russian court culture appeared in the turn of 1634 and 1635. From this time a small acrobatic troupe began to develop, the backbone was formed with two German artist and five of their Russian pupils. The development of the «German entertaiments» was connected with the youth of Tsarevich Aleksei Mikhailovich. First he looked at poteshniki (entertainers), then apprenticed three of his nakry players to the foreign artists, dressed them together with himself, his younger brother and the stolniks in the German comic costume. This period ended because of the tragic events in the life of the royal family in 1639: in January died Tsarevich Ivan, five years old, and in March died newborn Tsarevich Vasilii. To this the Empress’s health deteriorated. At the end of mourning the «German entertaiments» were not renewed. The author concludes in pointing out the similarity of «German entertaiments» from 1630s with the performances that were played at the court of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich in early 1672: no German actors on stage were professionals; the people close to Aleksei Mikhailovich played a significant role in the organization of the performances; the shows were based on the plastic actions that were understood without the help of an interpreter; the Tsar and his sons was shown for the audience. These performances have become an important preparatory step to the production of the first theatrical performance ― The Play of Artaxerxes (Ahasuerus; Artakserksovo deistvo). We gratefully acknowledge the support provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities for this article (project number RZ-51635-13). Inverse shadowing in actions of Baumslag—Solitar group

    No full text
In parallel with the shadowing theory (which is now very well-developed), the theory of inverse shadowing was developed. The main difference between the two theories is that the shadowing property means that we can find an exact trajectory near an approximate one while the inverse shadowing means that given a family of approximate trajectories we can find a member of this family that is close to any chosen exact trajectory. We generalise the property of inverse shadowing for group actions and prove the absence of this property for some linear actions of the Baumslag—Solitar group which is often considered as a source of counterexamples.Работа выполнена при финансовой поддержке РФФИ (грант №18-01-00230а)

Automatically Identifying Parameter Constraints in Complex Web APIs: A Case Study at Adyen

    No full text
Web APIs may have constraints on parameters, such that not all parameters are either always required or always optional. Moreover, the presence or value of one parameter could cause another parameter to be required, or parameters could have restrictions on what kinds of values are valid. Having a clear overview of the constraints helps API consumers to integrate without the need for additional support and with fewer integration faults. We made use of existing documentation and code analysis approaches for identifying parameter constraints in complex web APIs. In this paper, we report our case study of several APIs at Adyen, a large-scale payment company that offers complex Web APIs to its customers. Our results show that the documentation- and code-based approach can identify 23% and 53% of the constraints respectively and, when combined, 68% of them. We also reflect on the current challenges that these approaches face. In particular, the absence of information that explicitly describes the constraints in the documentation (in the documentation analysis), and the engineering of a sound static code analyser that is sensitive to data-flow, maintains longer parameter references throughout the API's code, and that is able to symbolically execute the several libraries and frameworks used by the API (in the static analysis).Accepted author manuscriptSoftware Engineerin

A DNA turbine powered by a transmembrane potential across a nanopore

    No full text
Rotary motors play key roles in energy transduction, from macroscale windmills to nanoscale turbines such as ATP synthase in cells. Despite our capabilities to construct engines at many scales, developing functional synthetic turbines at the nanoscale has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate rationally designed nanoscale DNA-origami turbines with three chiral blades. These DNA nanoturbines are 24-27 nm in height and diameter and can utilise transmembrane electrochemical potentials across nanopores to drive DNA bundles into sustained unidirectional rotations of up to 10 revolutions/s. The rotation direction is set by the designed chirality of the turbine. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations show how hydrodynamic flows drive this turbine. At high salt concentrations, the rotation direction of turbines with the same chirality is reversed, which is explained by a change in the anisotropy of the electrophoretic mobility. Our artificial turbines operate autonomously in physiological conditions, converting energy from naturally abundant electrochemical potentials into mechanical work. The results open new possibilities for engineering active robotics at the nanoscale

The conceptual bases for codifying Estonia׳s IP law and the main legislative changes: From the comparative approach to embedding drafted law into the socio-economic context

    No full text
AbstractThe aim of this article is to explore the conceptual bases and methodological issues involved in the codification process of Estonia׳s intellectual property law and outline the main results. The conceptual bases of this codification consist of evolutionary development, a comparative-law approach, stakeholder involvement and regulatory impact assessment. The reform draws on the existing regulatory framework (existing IP law), developed further by the identification and use of the best regulatory practices of other countries and model laws. Stakeholder involvement and regulatory impact assessment are used to improve the draft law and make it compatible with Estonian socio-economic conditions. This article summarises the results of the extensive work from 2012 to 2014 that resulted in the draft Copyright and Related Rights Act, the draft Industrial Property Code and the draft Act Implementing the Copyright and Related Rights Act and the Industrial Property Code with the relevant annexes. The analysis focuses on the Estonian codification project as a case study. The author relies on traditional research methods from social science and draws on comparative and dogmatic analysis conducted during the codification, using empirical socio-economic data acquired through stakeholder involvement and impact assessment. The article also reflects the author׳s personal experience, insights and intimate knowledge of the codification process gained through management and coordination of the project and in acting as a head of the expert group on the codification of IP law under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice of Estonia. The Estonian example could serve as a comparative model for countries aiming to modernise their IP laws within the EU acquis and international legal framework

Reality and the World of a Book. A Writer’s Individuality in View of Time and Emigration Space in По карнизам [Along the Cornices] by Aleksei Remizov

    No full text
The article is devoted to the specific character of time and space in Aleksei Remizov’s Along the Cornices, which was written in exile and belonged to the writer’s less known works of art. The analysis starts by comparing this work to the best known Remizov’s novel Whirlwind Russia, which was created approximately at the same time. These works of art basically differ in immanents of the presented world, however, the choice of artistic devices, especially the way of presenting time and space, is essentially similar. The author of the article pays attention to the most important features of the protagonist – his attitude towards the surroundings and attempts of self-defining in view of emigration reality. Although time and place of the action were approximately outlined in the book, for the protagonist the external world is mainly the place of exile and as such does not have much significance. Thus, in spite of essential awareness of time and space, the individual separates itself from this unwanted reality and transfers into the alternative world, the world of fantasy and unrestricted creation, which was called “the world of a book” here

Метабола как доминантный тип словесного образа в метареализме: причины выделения и способы анализа

    No full text
In the article the author analyses contemporary contents of the term metabole, as well as the ways of and limitations to using it. The term has been introduced by Mikhail Epstein with reference to metarealism, one of the largest Russian poetry schools, which emerged in the 1980s. The notion not only helps to understand the specifics of metarealistic language, but also makes analyses of this language more productive. By now, the content of the term metabole has expanded, which allows the author of the paper to look at this type of verbal image from several positions. Thus, from the point of view of linguistic poetics (Severskaya), metabole can be considered as a type of synthetic, contaminating method of word transformation, based on the mechanism of “realising”, “literalising” the metaphor. For example, in Aleksandr Yeryomenko’s sonnet “V gustykh metallurgicheskikh lesakh” [‘In the dense metallurgical forests…’] the metabole ‘metallurgical forests’ has a direct, literal meaning. In Ivan Zhdanov’s poem “More, chto zazhato v klyuvakh ptits, – dozhd’…” [‘The sea, clasped in the beaks of birds – rain...’] contamination encompasses various tropes: the complicating of the constructions of identification with predicative metaphors expressed by the participles (‘clasped’, ‘encompassed’) and the genitive metaphor (‘gesture of a tree’). From the point of view of theoretical and historical poetics (according to Broitman), metabole can be understood as one of the ways to revive the image language of syncretism, which expresses the relationship of identity of heterogeneous phenomena. For example, in the poem “Bortsy” [‘Wrestlers’] by Aleksei Parshchikov, cumulative images and parallelisms create an inversion of the myth about the origin of species. Applying combined philological methods makes it possible to see how metabolic imagery results from the contamination of various tropes and from the interpenetration of two image languages. For instance, in Andrei Tavrov’s poem “Blake i mladenets” [‘Blake and the Infant’] the accumulation of images forms a metaphysical picture, which correlates with the archaic motif of the path. At the same time, the description of the character of the poem is built through a contamination of tropes. The paper shows that the synthesis of linguistic, theoretical and historical poetics allows one to analyse the texts not only of early metarealism (Parshchikov, Yeryomenko, Zhdanov, Arkadii Dragomoshchenko), but also pertaining to metarealism at the contemporary stage (Vladimir Aristov’s idem-forma, the before-verbal of Tavrov, Kutik’s intertextuality, Celtic poetics of Agris), and to various poetics associated with metarealism (the Dragomoshchenko line, etc.). д.)
