Beauveria bassiana keratitis: Management of an atypical clinical presentation

    No full text
We report an atypical presentation of Beauveria bassiana keratitis which unusually presented in a 85-year-old patient with a corneal ulcer with an anterior segment inflammation and hypopyon. Despite negative culture and unspecific results from panfungal PCR-based sequencing, the patient was treated for a presumed fungal infection. Following clinical deterioration an emergency surgical intervention with apposition of a corneal patch was performed. Infection resolution was achieved following the introduction of systemic voriconazole to the topical one

Preparazione di nanocompositi elastomerici a base di nanotubi di carbonio come sensori di deformazione

    No full text

A Systematic Review of Micropulse Laser Trabeculoplasty (MLT) in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) Management: Efficacy, Safety, and Future Perspectives

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) is gaining attention as a non-invasive treatment option for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), offering an alternative to traditional surgeries and medications. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness, safety, and potential of MLT in glaucoma management. Methods: This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The strength of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology, following the 2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM) recommendations. Results: We identified 79 articles, and after removing duplicates and screening abstracts, 56 articles were eligible for further review. A detailed full-text analysis was conducted on 26 articles, of which 15 met the predefined inclusion criteria. Conclusions: MLT shows promise as a primary or adjunctive treatment for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma and ocular hypertension patients. Current evidence supports its efficacy and safety; however, additional long-term studies are needed to confirm its durability and compare its effectiveness with traditional surgical and pharmacological approaches. Standardizing treatment protocols and refining patient selection criteria could enhance MLT’s clinical value and support its broader adoption in glaucoma care

Tailors' community centre. Design of a sustainable product-service system for clothing care in Kibera Slum in Kenya, based on Distributed Renewable Energies

The thesis is framed within the LeNSes project (Learning Network on Sustainable energy systems, 2013-2016) funded by the EU Edulink II programme with Africa, aimed at giving access to “Sustainable Energy for All” as driver to solve social-equity and gender issues, fostering sustainable development; combining promising models of Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS) and Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE). The thesis is co-tutored by Professor Lilac Osanjo from University of Nairobi, Kenya, partner of the LeNSes project. The thesis research and design path adopted the MSDS method (Methodology for System Design for Sustainability). First phase of the process has been the Strategic Analysis (SA), which describes the context and the state of the art of clothing care conditions and culture, highlighting socio-ethical and environmental problems in Kibera slum, Nairobi. The SA and the following design activities have been conducted with the support and feedbacks of local professors. The S.PSS designed is: ‘Tailors’ community centre’ aimed at providing professional tailors with a communal workshop, properly equipped with quality tools and appliances as sewing and washing machines, irons and wide drawing tables, and with guaranteed energy access through local solar production. On the roof of the tailors’ centre, 20 solar panels provides the 4KW/h required. Professionals can join the community for a monthly fee, receiving as benefit the opportunity of improving their working conditions and efficiency, as well as extending their business. Students and apprentices can come to the centre to attend sewing classes, to learn basics of tailoring and/or to become professionals. The ownership of all appliances, equipment and maintenance will be in charge to an external company, for a fixed payment by the centre. This business model guarantees efficiency and competitiveness of all materials and improves the economic sustainability of the S.PSS. The thesis result is a S.PSS of a communal tailoring centre based on values of equity and solidarity, fostering self-empowerment and jointly efforts: a win-win proposal combining environmental, socio-ethical and economic sustainability

Cerebral collateral therapeutics in acute ischemic stroke: A randomized preclinical trial of four modulation strategies.

    No full text
Cerebral collaterals are dynamically recruited after arterial occlusion and highly affect tissue outcome in acute ischemic stroke. We investigated the efficacy and safety of four pathophysiologically distinct strategies for acute modulation of collateral flow (collateral therapeutics) in the rat stroke model of transient middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. A composed randomization design was used to assign rats (n = 118) to receive phenylephrine (induced hypertension), polygeline (intravascular volume load), acetazolamide (cerebral arteriolar vasodilation), head down tilt (HDT) 15° (cerebral blood flow diversion), or no treatment, starting 30 min after MCA occlusion. Compared to untreated animals, treatment with collateral therapeutics was associated with lower infarct volumes (62% relative mean difference; 51.57 mm absolute mean difference; p < 0.001) and higher chance of good functional outcome (OR 4.58, p < 0.001). Collateral therapeutics acutely increased cerebral perfusion in the medial (+40.8%; p < 0.001) and lateral (+19.2%; p = 0.016) MCA territory compared to pretreatment during MCA occlusion. Safety indicators were treatment-related mortality and cardiorespiratory effects. The highest efficacy and safety profile was observed for HDT. Our findings suggest that acute modulation of cerebral collaterals is feasible and provides a tissue-saving effect in the hyperacute phase of ischemic stroke prior to recanalization therapy
