A consistent model of the initiation, early expansion, and possible extinction of a spark-ignited flame kernel
Modelling the establishment and growth of spark-ignited (SI) flame kernels has always been a topic of great interest, especially due to their key role in affecting the performance of SI engines. A major issue is that the unsteady conditions and the small kernel size hinder the application of the typical (both linear and non-linear) flame stretch correlations, valid only long after the ignition stage. Overcoming such limitations, this work presents a novel, mathematically consistent, and compact model that enables prediction of flame kernel initiation and early expansion, including its possible extinction. Firstly, spark-driven initiation models from literature are discussed, and an effective flame kernel initiation method is proposed. Then, the expansion model is defined complementing the mass, energy, and species conservation equations for the spherical kernel with the reactant and temperature profiles outside of it using the theory of transient thermodiffusive flames. After accounting for the convective flow caused by the combustion-induced density reduction and the variable thermodynamic properties of the reacting fuel/air mixture, the result is a two-equation model that predicts the kernel expansion even up to its possible extinction due to flame stretch. After calibration of the expansion model, successful validation is achieved against literature data on lean propane/air flames, and the influence of the model parameters is examined in detail. The proposed expansion model is formulated also aiming for inclusion into the simulation of combustion in SI engines, enabling more accurate predictions at part loads, as well as more effective estimation of the cycle-to-cycle variation thanks to the good model sensitivity to the parameters most affecting the ignition
Giacomo Leopardi lettore di Plutarco
This paper deals with the different features of Plutarch's presence in Leopardi's poems and prose compositions. By examining mentions of Leopardi's studies on Plutarch, linguistic references and textual quotations from Vitae and Moralia the author shows that the poet had a comprehensive knowledge of Plutarch's works and he was deeply influenced by the ancied writer
La philia tra Moralia e Vitae
The paper explores the importance of the idea of philia in the whole corpus Plutarcheum. First the author gives a brief survey of the works, lost writings and fragments in which Plutarch deals with the theme. Then she draws attention on some passages from Moralia and VItae particularly significant to understand the meaning of philia in Plutarch's ethical-political thought, connected with the historical and cultural context
The Sardinian coast, an uninhabitaded place of historical transformations
The Sardinian coast have been the scene of continuous transformations linked to the activity and the history of human population, contrary to what might suggest a coastal area characterized for a long time by a low settlement density. The boundary space between land and sea was the only border between the island of Sardinia and the ‘outside’ and a place of continuous exchange and change with positive or negative consequences: trade between Nuragic and Mycenaean people, conquest by Romans, continuous raids of Arabs (VII-VIII sec. AD) and then Ottomans (XVI sec.), until recent changes for touristic purposes. The signs of these modifications on the landscape are at times visible, other times partially or totally disappeared. All these signs affect territories not only at the landscape scale, but also the architectural and material scale. In fact, the industrial construction techniques have influenced design, replacing traditional materials and techniques. The use of local stone represented the land mark on the human landscape, today instead characterized by materials, techniques and architectural styles homogeneous along the Sardinian and Mediterranean coast. For research purposes, but even more for the dissemination of knowledge, the representation of these transformations still presents several operating difficulties, especially for the fact that adding spatial and temporal information involves confusion. The description of these sequences of signs as historical layers is an important challenge to promote an aware observation of the cultural landscape, not only among tourists, but also among local people. Thus, the goal of the work is to propose solutions for the representation of places, examining a part of the Sardinian western coast as a case study. These outcomes can have implications for the study of the ‘land as palimpsest’ and also in order to raise the awareness of cultural heritage. The paper will present the results of the case study analysis, in terms of graphical representation; secondly, it will try to propose ICT tools that can be integrated with territorial analysis and facilitate the comprehension of the landscape

Extension and Validation of a 1D Model Applied to the Analysis of a Water Injected Turbocharged Spark Ignited Engine at High Loads and over a WLTP Driving Cycle
The technique of liquid Water Injection (WI) at the intake port of downsized boosted SI engines is a promising solution to improve the knock resistance at high loads. An existing 1D engine model has been extended to improve its ability to simulate the effects of the water injection on the flame propagation speed and knock onset. The 1D model is validated against experimental data collected at different engine speeds and loads for a twin-cylinder turbocharged SI engine. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data, in terms of in-cylinder pressure cycle, burn rate profile and knock propensity. The combustion process is predicted quite well, except for some inaccuracies in the early stage of combustion. Both experimental and numerical data confirm that the WI technology is able to improve significantly the fuel consumption of the tested engine under high-load knock-limited operation. In a second stage, the validated model is used to build-up a complete engine operating map aimed at investigating the potential of WI technique to improve the fuel economy of a segment A vehicle. A reduced impact of WI is observed, since a knock-free operation occurs along most of the WLTP cycle
