Surrogate modeling in design optimization of structures with discontinuous responses: A new approach for ill-posed problems in crashworthiness design

    No full text
Advances in computational technology have resulted in the dramatic reduction of computational time for crashworthiness analysis, hence enabling its structural design optimization. Surrogate modeling has been shown to further reduce computational effort as well as to smooth noisy responses. Crashworthiness optimization problems are, though, ill posed as they include nonlinear, noncontinuous and noisy responses. This violates the Hadamard conditions for well-posed problems and therefore the applicability of gradient-based algorithms is limited. Here, discontinuities in the responses with respect to the design variables will be handled that result in large changes in the system functions with only small changes in the design variables using a novel surrogate modeling technique. The applicability of typical global surrogate models is limited when critical discontinuities are present. An efficient method has been developed here to identify the number of discontinuities and their position in the design domain. Previous works assume a said number of discontinuities; here though, the number of discontinuities is not given a priori. The discontinuities are identified by examining the relative difference in the response value of samples in immediate proximity of each other. Samples in the same continuous subdomain are clustered and a support vector machine for classification is exploited to locate discontinuities. Local approximations are then used for the continuous subspaces between the discontinuities. Lastly, a surrogate-based design optimization is carried out. Starting with a two-bar truss, demonstrating a snap-through discontinuity, this method is shown to account for such discontinuities. This is then integrated into an optimization framework. Further academic example, namely a six-bar truss is modeled using the open-source framework Kratos Multiphysics and then optimized, showing the applicability of the method to problems with multiple discontinuities. Finally, a crash-absorbing tube is optimized that is impacted with an angle resulting in a noncontinuous design space: desired axial crushing and undesirable global buckling. After summarizing the results, advantages and possible limitations are discussed

This work investigates by means of the finite element method the behaviour of viscoelastic materials subjected to an impact loading by a non-deformable sphere. The results are presented in form of dimensionless parameters; hence, the complexity of the problem is significantly reduced. Thus, it is possible to represent the governing relations through so-called master curves in accessible two-dimensional graphs. For the scaling of the dimensional problem parameters the time history of the impactor’s penetration is used together with the analytical solution for the impact event in case of a purely elastic half-space according to Heinrich Hertz. Thus, a comparatively small initial velocity is used which results in a rather long contact duration. Consequently, a part of the energy introduced by the impactor may be dissipated through viscoelastic processes. This effect is utilised by protective equipment designed to minimise the forces occurring in unintentional impact situations. Thus, it is necessary to tune the viscoelastic material behaviour to the impact event such that a minimal loading due to the deceleration of the impactor is obtained. On the other hand, a too large penetration of the impactor owing to the increase inmaterial compliance during contact must be prevented. The consideration of these two conflicting design criteria is realised in thiswork by a multi-objective optimisation. Moreover, the response spectra can be used for the determination of unknown model parameters of a viscoelastic material sample by means of impact experiments. This application may be utilised e.g. in the quality control of viscoelastic products. The procedure developed in this work is validated by laboratory experiments using polyurethane foams.

Jet engine design requires an accurate analysis of uncertainty sources and of their effect on life and integrity of the parts. Fuel consumptions and noise emissions must be strongly reduced while fulfilling safety requirements. In order to comply with both requisites, the dependence of the system on uncertainty must be diminished. This has been achieved, until now, through the use of safety factors. However, the advent of high power computing now allows the usage of probabilistic methods to determine the effect of input variation on output variables. The aim of this thesis is to develop a new and problem-adapted methodology, based on a combination of appropriate methods for the design and optimization under uncertainty of a low pressure turbine (LPT) rotor. The physical system is described and simulated through finite element methods (FEM). The proposed approach is discussed via the following investigations: possible sources of aleatoric uncertainty in the design process are identified, for instance in engine-to-engine variations, in the manufacturing process and in ambient conditions. The effect of these variations on the responses is measured through sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification. The optimization is performed on a reduced design space, which is obtained from the sensitivity analysis. In order to include robustness in this optimization, different architectures are compared and the most efficient, in terms of computational time, is chosen. The use of probabilistic methods provides the practitioner with extensive information on the system, which cannot be gained through the use of classical deterministic techniques. An optimal solution, which satisfies the safety requirements and is insensitive to variation in the design parameters, is obtained by including robustness in the optimization. The methods analyzed here are illustrated for two different cases. In the first, the secondary air system as stand-alone is presented. In the second, a coupled low-thermomechanical model is analyzed for a steady state condition and a reduced transient mission, enabling the calculation of a probabilistic life prediction.

Until recently, the concept of vehicle safety was primarily defined by protecting the vehicle occupants. Current efforts are addressing the aim of protecting pedestrians in road accidents better in the future. The bonnet plays here a particularly important role, because it is the main contact zone of the different head impacts. In addition to the design, also the package below the bonnet and the inner panel structure are decisive factors in pedestrian safety. The requirements for a bonnet are very complex and are not easy to translate into geometry. In order to improve the design of the bonnet for pedestrian safety, a variety of complex calculations are required. A numerical optimization provides the opportunity to increase the efficiency of the development process. Therefore some issues are investigated. The aim of the study is to identify methods to improve the integration of an optimization in the development process of a bonnet. One focus is on the interface between CAD and FEM environments. To solve the occurring problems, there are several possibilities. An important aspect in the selection of the method regarding the integration of an optimization into the development process is the compatibility with the existing CAD system. Another problem is that the calculations for pedestrian head impact are very extensive and necessitate a very high computing time. As part of the optimization, an equivalent static load method has to be investigated, replacing the time-consuming explicit crash calculations in the optimization process. Finding the initial design for a parametric optimization is another important issue. A new method is shown to optimize the topology of a bonnet regarding head impact. The result provides a proposal for a principle form of the bonnet structure

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Modern vehicle crash design is confronted with ever increasing requirements, often applying to a large number of vehicles sharing many common components in varying permutations. Thus, every component of the vehicle structure must be designed, such that it works in combination with the other components to fulfill the respective vehicle's design goals. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to derive decoupled design goals for each component, such that fulfillment of these component goals guarantees fulfilling the design goals for the entire system. The breaking down of complex systems into subsystems, solving each subproblem and then recombining the subsystem solutions in order to obtain a solution for the entire system is a primary approach in systems engineering, e.g. illustrated in the V-model. Also, vehicle development is usually spread out over several departments, which are responsible for separate but interacting parts of the structure. Each of these parts is not only subject to the requirements imposed by crashworthiness but also to requirements defined by acoustics, driving dynamics, NVH, cost, and weight. In this context, vehicle crash design provides constraints, which have to be met in order to achieve a certain crash performance. Together with the constraints from the other disciplines, optimization with respect to cost and weight is performed under these constraints. The set of constraints for each parameter defines a feasible region, a hypercube, in the structure's parameter space, the solution space. This work deals primarily with the identification of such solution spaces for vehicle crash design. After a discussion of the state of the art regarding simplified crash models and systems engineering approaches, an overview over the vehicle crash criteria for this work is provided. Then the general concept of solution spaces is illustrated and explained in detail. Also, suitable functional parameters are identified. For the particular problem of vehicle crashworthiness, two approaches are suggested. The indirect approach is based on a stochastic algorithm for iterative identification of a solution space for a given function. A suitable substitute model, which maps the functional parameters of the vehicle structure directly to the relevant target values is developed. In the direct approach, the solution space is semi-analytically derived directly from the structure's topology and mass distribution. A mathematical framework is established in which finding the largest solution space becomes a linear, convex optimization problem. The approaches are compared and discussed. Component optimization is performed, in order to attain the design goal defined by the solution space. The optimization is done iteratively on a submodel basis with driven nodes and regular boundary condition updates using state of the art automatic meshing, finite element solvers and evolutionary optimization strategies. The resulting design fulfills its component goal and consequently leads to fulfillment of the system goal, as stated by the underlying theory derived from systems engineering. Finally a conclusion is drawn and an outlook on further refinement and application of the presented methods is provided.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
