Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

One of the most important objectives in the orthodontic treatment is the stability of treatment corrections. However, after many decades of research there is a consensus that stability of aligned teeth is variable and largely unpredictable. Considering the great importance that clinical orthodontists place on the ability to predict when posttreatment occlusal changes are prone to occur, and motivated by the promising aspects of Petrovic/Lavergne analysis with regard to relapse prognosis, we decided to evaluate it. The sample used consisted of 100 Class II Brazilian white patients, male and female, subdivided into Petrovic growth categories. The average initial age was 12.4 years. Treatment was carried out with a nonpreangulated edgewise appliance in conjunction with the extraction of four bicuspids. The lateral cephalogram and dental casts for each patient were measured at three different stages: pretreatment, end of treatment and on average ten years posttreatment. To assess relapse among the groups, dental casts, conventional cephalometric and Johnston analyses were used. Clinically, category 4 patients presented the best lower incisors posttreatment stability, with 78.57% of the cases showing a satisfactory result. Maxillary and mandibular growth did not present a significant correlation with lower incisor irregularity relapse. Category 1 patients presented the least tendency while category 3 patients presented the greatest tendency for posttreatment overbite relapse. The main factors in molar and overjet relapse were respectively, upper molar and incisor mesialization. Considering net change, in all categories anterior mandibular growth/displacement was the most important single factor for the molar and overjet corrections. Patients belonging to groups with neutral and posterior mandibular rotation/inclination presented forward mandibular rotation during treatment and posttreatment. Mandibular rotation did not present a significant relation with posttreatment lower incisor irregularity relapse. Categories 1, 2 and 3 postretention soft tissue evaluation was satisfactory, while categories 4 and 5 showed a very retrusive profile

The long-term stability of the expansion effects still remains a controversial issue in the Orthodontic literature. So far, few studies have approached this matter in a real scientific way. In the early permanent dentition, when most orthodontic cases are referred for treatment, the posterior crossbite correction has been differently addressed: rapid palatal expansion (RPE), if there is a maxillary constriction, or slow dentoalveolar expansion (SDE), when lingual tipping plays the major role. However, at such stage of the occlusal development, both alterations are usually combined, and that is why this work aimed to study the long-term stability of these two different expansion techniques (RPE and SDE) approximately 10 years postretention of the complementing edgewise mechanotherapy. Pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2) and postretention (T3) study casts of 30 patients were assessed in each of the 3 groups, including a control. In either test groups, male and female adolescents had been treated for their posterior crossbites, followed by extraction or non-extraction edgewise mechanics. All changes in the interdental widths (3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6), either at T2-T1 or T3-T2, were analyzed by the paired Student´s t-test. The two-way ANOVA and the TUKEY´s test (p<0,05) were applied to compare and identify differences among the groups. Clinical variables like gender, age, extractions, sagital interarch relationships, amount of expansion, time of treatment and treatment length were all correlated to the achieved long-term results. Excepting for the 3-3 width, all other widths increased after treatment in the test groups. The control group showed to be completely devoid of posttreatment changes, although the 3-3 width significantly decreased postretention, reminding the normal development. As the RPE group demonstrated a trend toward decreasing the stability from the posterior to the anterior region of the arch, a pattern opposite to the midpalatine suture scissor-like opening, there were reasons to believe that, despite of no serious clinical implications, skeletal changes over a complex system are not maintained for a lifetime. 20% of the RPE cases, and 30% of the SDE cases, clinically relapsed after the observation period, mainly at the 6-6 width. As no specific ethiologic factor was found for the RPE group, whereas the SDE amount of expansion was directly related to the amount of relapse, this technique was deemed to be more clinically efficient, in the long-term, for the correction of the posterior crossbite in the early permanent dentition

The aim of this study was to compare the cephalometric changes in patients with Class II Division 1 malocclusion, treated with the Jasper Jumper and Twin Force Bite Corrector, associated with fixed orthodontic appliances. The sample consisted of 120 lateral cephalometric radiographs of 60 patients, divided into 3 groups: Experimental Group 1 comprised 20 patients with initial mean age of 12.39 years, treated with the Jasper Jumper appliance associated with device fixed for an average period of 2.42 years; Experimental group 2 with 20 patients with initial mean age of 11.83 years, treated with Twin Force unit associated with braces, with an average treatment time of 2.59 years; Control Group, composed of 20 individuals, average initial age of 12.13 years and observed for an average period of 2.21 years. The changes were compared between groups by ANOVA followed by Tukey test. It was observed that both treatments presented a restrictive effect on the maxilla; there was significant improvement in the maxillomandibular relationship in the two treatment protocols groups evaluated and clockwise rotation of the occlusal plane. The Jasper Jumper group, provided a significant limitation of the vertical development of the maxillary molars in relation to other groups. The lower incisors showed greater protrusion and extrusion of mandibular molars in groups 1 and 2. Both appliances provided significant improvement of maxillomandibular relationship, overjet, overbite and molar relationship. Groups 1 and 2 presented retrusion of the upper lip

Aim: To compare changes in linear transversal dimensions and dental arch shape during at pretreatment, posttreatment and in long-term according to the severity of anterior crowding in individuals treated with 4-premolars extraction. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 41subjects with Class I and II sagittal relationship treated with extraction of 4 premolars, divided into 2 groups according to the severity of the anterior crowding and evaluated in the pretreatment, posttreatment and postretention. Group Mild crowding: subjects with initial mandibular Little irregularity index (LII) less than 6mm Group Severe crowding: subjects with initial mandibular Little irregularity index of 6mm or greater. Three-dimensional images of dental casts were analyzed. Little\'s irregularity index, the transverse and longitudinal widths of the maxillary and mandibular arches were evaluated. Intergroup comparisons were performed with independent t tests. The anatomical landmarks were marked, the x, y, z coordinates for each landmark were collected for maxillary and mandibular arches. Generalized Procrustes Analysis, Principal Component Analysis and Canonical Variates Analysis were used to examine the variation between individuals and groups. Results: The groups presented similar behavior between them for maxillary and mandibular arches dimensions and dental crowding for all stages. The variables showed different behavior among the stages in both groups. The Principal Components Analysis demonstrated greatest variation in the shape was related to the displacement of the incisor and canines. The arch shape changed with treatment and was maintained, with slight variation, over the long-term follow-up. The behavior for maxillary either mandibular dental arches for both groups were similar. Conclusion: There were no differences between mild and severe crowding groups for dental arch dimensions, but the mild group presented greater mandibular percentage of relapse. The initial dental arch shape was modified during the treatment and showed slight variation in the long-term follow-up in both groups.

Objective: The purpose is to evaluate the stability of the mandibular anterior teeth alignment by comparing two forms of bonding of the fixed canine-to-canine retainer, bonded only to the canines and bonded to each of the mandibular incisors and canines, with 5 years follow-up. Material and Methods: 43 patients (22 female, 21 male) with Class I and Class II malocclusion, were divided into 2 groups: Group 1: 25 patients (13 females, 12 males) with retainer bonded only to the canines. Mean initial age, treatment time, long-term posttreatment time were 13.42 (SD, 1.51), 3.06 (1.56) and 5.60 (SD, 1.36) years, respectively. Group 2: 18 patients (9 females, 9 males) with retainer bonded to the all mandibular anterior teeth. Mean initial age, treatment time, long-term posttreatment time were 13.01 (SD, 2.94), 3.62 (SD, 1.84), 5.31 (SD, 0.77) years, respectively. Dental casts were obtained and digitized at pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2) and at a mean of 5 years long-term posttreatment (T3). The following measurements were obtained: Little irregularity Index, intercanine, interpremolar and intermolar widths. The intergroup comparisons of the variables at pretreatment, posttreatment and long-term posttreatment stages and the treatment and long-term posttreatment changes were performed with independent t tests. Results: The mandibular irregularity index showed a statistically significant decrease with treatment and remained stable in the long-term posttreatment follow-up. In the group 1, there was a significantly increase in the mandibular inter first premolars width with treatment and it was stable in the long-term posttreatment. In the group 2, the mandibular inter second premolars width showed a significantly increase with treatment and it remained stable in the long-term. The intergroup comparison at all stages (T1, T2 and T3) showed no statistically significant differences between the groups. Group 2 showed a greater decrease in the mandibular intercanine width than the all teeth group in the long-term posttreatment phase. Conclusions: There was no difference in the amount of relapse of mandibular anterior crowding with fixed canine-to-canine retainers bonded only to the canines and bonded all the six anterior teeth. Thus, both retainers can be recommended. However, the canine group showed a decrease in the mandibular intercanine width in long term posttreatment. Introduction: The treatment of the open bite is not always performed at the ideal stage and when this occurs, there is usually a greater skeletal factor in its composition, which suggests, in many cases, the association of a surgical treatment simultaneously with the orthodontic one or often in a compensatory orthodontic treatment. Objective: To evaluate the attractiveness of the smile and profile among the different protocols for treating anterior open bite. Methods: 30 patients with previous open bite treated with or without extractions, divided into two groups, according to the treatment performed: G1- Surgical group, composed of 15 patients (9 females; 6 males ) with a mean initial age of 20.53 years. years (SD=4.72) treated with fixed appliances and orthognathic surgery for a period of 2.65 years (SD=0.58). G2- Compensatory group, composed of 15 patients (9 females; 7 males), with a mean initial age of 20.01 years (SD=4.17), treated only with fixed appliances for an average period of 2 .55 years (SD=0.87). The attractiveness of the smile and profile was evaluated in black and white photographs of profiles and smiles posed before and after treatment, with a numerical rating scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being the least attractive and 10 being the most attractive of the smile. Intergroup comparison was performed using an independent t test. Results: In the final phase, the surgical group presented a more attractive smile and profile than the compensatory group. The surgical group showed greater improvement in smile attractiveness and profile with treatment than the compensatory group. Conclusion: Both surgical and compensatory treatments produce equally satisfactory results in terms of esthetics, both for laypersons and dentists.

Obtiveram-se as compensações dentárias necessárias no final do tratamento ortodôntico e estas foram preservadas a longo prazoThe main objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of the following cephalometric measurements: SNA, SNB, ANB, 1.NA, 1-NA, 1 .NB, 1 -NB, 1.ENP-ENA, IMPA, 1.1 . This analysis was carried out in orthodontically treated patients which had the four first pre-molars extracted. Alternatively, this study also determined the influence of the proposed treatment at the dento-basal arrangements by orthodontic mechanics and its preservation after five years of treatment completion. The sample of this study was comprised of twenty-seven patients that were assessed at the beginning (T1), at the end (T2) and five years later (T3). At the beginning of treatment the patients age averaged thirteen years and five months and all the subjects displayed an ANB angle over than 4 degrees. Among the studied sample, 14 subjects were classified as Angle Class II, Division 2 malocclusion, 12 subjects displayed Angle Class I, and 1 Angle Classe II, Division 2. All the subjects were orthodontically treated by means of edgewise appliances. During all the three phases of the study the radiological data were obtained through lateral cephalograms, which were performed manually, depicted eight angular and two linear measurements. The statistical analysis in which the data were processed included one way analysis of variance in order to identify the changes between the phases related to each studied measurement. As an adjunctive method, the Tukey test was conducted to indicate in which phases of the proposed study the statistically significant changes were occurring. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was recorded to relate the 1.1 cephalometric measurements with all the remaining measurements obtained throughout the three phases of the study. According to the obtained results, all the studied measurements, between phases T1 and T2, significantly changed reflecting the influence of orthodontic mechanics on the dental movement. Between the T2 and T3 phases, all the measurements remained stable. By the end of the orthodontic treatment all the necessaries dental arrangements were performed and preserved in a long-term fashion

O grupo I exibiu maior migração radicular para mesial do primeiro molar inferior, alcançando significância estatística. Anchorage represents one of the main factors in effective tooth movement, in order that orthodontic mechanics can be used satisfactorily. In all existing orthodontic techniques, orthodontists have longed for a mechanical efficiency which is directly proportional to the smallest anchorage loss. In this research, the objective was to compare the Standard Edgewise Appliance and the Straight Wire Appliance cephalometrically in relationship to the lower anchorage loss during the leveling phase. This research used a sample of 46 patient cephalographs, which were taken at the beginning of the treatment and at the end of the leveling phase. These patients were divided into two groups according to the technique used for the malocclusion correction. Group I consisted of 27 patients whose orthodontic correction was accomplished by the Standard Edgewise Appliance. Group II, consisted of 19 patients, whose orthodontic treatment was accomplished by the Straight Wire Appliance. A specific cephalogram was traced above each cephalograph, to measure anchorage teeth and incisor movements. The cephalometric measurements were the lineal distances CM-C, RM-C, CI-C and RI-C. After the statistical evaluation and with the obtained results, it could be concluded that during the arch leveling phase, in the comparison of the Standard Edgewise Appliance and Straight Wire Appliance, Groups I and II, there was loss of lower anchorage in both groups. The first lower molar crown exhibited mesial movement which was more evident in group II, but none were statistically significant. There was loss of anchorage of the first lower molar roots with statistical significance for group I. The lower incisors exhibited coronary labial tipping without statistical significance, although more evident in group I. Group II presented less lower incisor root tipping, although not statistically significant
