Kairós in science blogging: immediacy, self-expression and audience engagement
The present paper explores the rhetorical concept of «kairós» as a decisive factor of the argumentative success of scientific communications to highlight the linguistic shape it takes in science blogs. Science blogs are a discourse genre increasingly used by scientists and international research groups to engage publics of experts and non-experts in the modern scientific enterprise. The approach is both rhetorical and linguistic. It draws from studies of popular science genres by Carolyn Miller and fellow rhetoricians and bases its linguistic analysis on frequency observations in a corpus of blogs maintained by scientists in different areas.Il presente contributo indaga il concetto retorico di «kairós» quale fattore decisivo del successo argomentativo della comunicazione scientifica online per evidenziarne la forma linguistica che assume nei blog di scienza, un genere di discorso sempre più usato da scienziati e gruppi di ricerca internazionali per coinvolgere il pubblico di esperti e non-esperti nell’impresa scientifica moderna. BADGE: Global competence for sustainable internationalisation in engineering education
This paper presents a new Erasmus+ funded project, Becoming a digital global engineer (BADGE2020). The project is a three-year collaboration between language and communication teachers at14 technical universities and engineering departments in 12 countries, with partners representingindustry, consultants, educational organizations and students. The rationale behind the project isthe recognition of two facts: the ever-increasing need for global competence among engineeringgraduates and professionals (Parkinson 2009, OECD 2018), and the need to boost and adjustcommunication and language for specific purposes (LSP) teaching to better support sustainableinternationalisation, acknowledging multiculturality and multilingualism.The project was initiated from within a larger network of language and communication teachers attechnical universities in Europe (GELS 2020), established in 2015 to “enhance future engineers’language skills in order to prepare them for the increasingly challenging demands of a globalisedmarket”, and is divided into 8 intellectual outputs: communication course for future engineers,sustainable writing skills for engineers, e-communication skills, global competence andentrepreneurship, podcasting and video casting architecture, soft skills for engineering students,and global competence through IT and serious games.Working in 8 transnational teams, we will develop learning material ranging from course syllabiand exercises, to handbooks and pods, to be made freely available for download and localmodification as open educational resources. Furthermore, the material will be connected to asystem of digital badges that can be used as a supplement to official degree diplomas

The paper is an extensive review article of Gatto, M. 2014. Web as Corpus. Theory and Practice. London, UK: Bloomsbury. (xxii + 232 pp.). In reviewing the book's contents, it discusses state-of-the-art research in the field of web as corpus, namely the role of the web in the now well-established discipline of corpus linguistics. The review of Gatto's book is an opportunity to consider issues and applications variously pertaining to the relation between language corpora and the World Wide Web
A phraseological approach to film dialogue: film stylistics revisited
The paper takes film dialogue as a test case for a corpus-driven investigation of phraseology. The analysis is mainly based on three strands of research, both linguistic and translational. These are: corpus work comparing contemporary film and television dialogue with natural conversation, research on translational routines in audiovisual translation (dubbese) and the phraseological approach to language. However, in order to focus on the formulaic features of English original film dialogue, the translational perspective is backgrounded. The study is corpus-driven in that formulae of filmic speech are extracted from the corpus on the basis of their frequency. Furthermore, the sequences thus found are compared to general reference corpora of British and American English in order to explore their distribution and functions.
The results are shown to be relevant to a stylistic appraisal of scripted film dialogue as well as to an understanding of some methodological issues associated with corpus-driven studies of phraseology in general
Constructing a corpus of translated films: a corpus view of dubbing
Corpus linguistic research has in recent years entered the realm of Translation Studies by providing translation scholars and professionals alike with new insights into the processes and products of translation. Audiovisual translation is no exception, with corpus research being done on the linguistic and translational features of dubbing, as well as other modes of AVT, for example subtitling and audio description. Corpus of Film Dialogue, a parallel corpus of American and British film dialogues and their dubbed versions into Italian to which a comparable component of original Italian films has been added, with a view to discussing the main issues concerning the use of
corpora in AVT. Bringing together some of the tenets of corpus linguistics, i.e. language patterning, routine and creativity, and AVT perspectives, insights gained from the Pavia Corpus are presented as evidence for a combined approach
