Recommendations on Open Science Training

No full text
Building on Open Science Training Handbook (available as gitbook at https://book.fosteropenscience.eu/ and in the github repository at https://github.com/Open-Science-Training-Handbook), and on successes of over 40 online and face-to-face events that FOSTER organized in 2017-2018, this report provides good practice recommendations on open science training targeting researchers and multipliers – train-the-trainers approaches for research support staff and librarians. It includes the following: A selection of open science topics to include in your training activities; Useful tips on how to plan based on outcomes rather than objectives; Overview of types of training based on the audience size, funds available, duration of training and training levels; Organizational task checklist; Exercises and glossary; Overview of FOSTER training events for life science, social sciences and humanities and FOSTER open science clinic series of speed counselling for early career researchers, Tech Transfer and Grant Officers and National Contact Points for Horizon 2020; Recommendations on train-the-trainer approaches highlighting our experience from FOSTER open science trainer bootcamp and materials from two other train-the-trainer courses: ELIXIR EXCELERATE and Powering up your 2018 (data skills) from ANDS, Nectar and RDS. Roadmap for implementing open science training practices in research institutions suggesting six practical actions to be implemented by research institutions to support a cultural change towards open science

Exploratory study of risks to stability in foster and kinship care in NSW

No full text
This report describes an exploratory study on various aspects and risks to stability in foster and kinship placements. The report finds that compared to foster care, risks to placement stability are more evident for kinship care. Kinship carers (predominantly grandparents) are older and few have formal agency support. They cope, some not easily, with challenging situations as they arise (e.g. death/separation/divorce of partner/spouse, their birth children’s substance abuse problems, children’s challenging behaviours, their own and grandchildren’s medical conditions). The concept of older carers ‘parenting again’ should not be taken lightly. For many carers there is a continuation and increase in daily housework chores and child care routines, with little time for leisure activities, holidays, hobbies and personal time. Parenting again also requires older carers to make significant changes in the way they conform/adapt to contemporary practices around parenting, child discipline and education. Common themes suggested by foster and kinship carers for keeping placements stable were providing children with routines and boundaries; developing/maintaining strong relationships (with workers, family and birth family); receiving respite; and being supported by workers

Each of the ten online courses takes about 1-2 hours to work through and participants receive a badge upon successful completion. The courses include practical tips on getting started with OS as well as providing information on discipline specific tools and resources that are available. There is no specified order through the courses – participants can just explore topics that they want to learn more about at their own pace. TTA school-based research consortium initiative, the evaluation, final report

No full text
This is the final report of the evaluation of th School-Based Research Consortium Initiative which ran in England from 1998 to 2001. The initiative was sponsored via a public/private partnership between the Teacher Training Agency (TTA), a UK Government agency, and the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT), a private not-for-profit company. The aim of the initiative was to create local infrastructures of support and action for teachers to engage ‘in and with’ research. Those infrastructures were made up of consortia, consisting in each case of a small number of schools together with a university department of education and at least one local education authority (LEA). Over the three years that it ran, the initiative spawned a considerable range and volume of research activities, including peer observation of teaching, peer review of videos of teaching, interview-based study, surveys measuring such things as rewards and sanctions in the classroom. In addition to well-developed teacher-university collaborations and some joint work with local education authorities, there were many examples of teacher-teacher collaboration (some of it between different schools), and also times when teachers and pupils worked together to devise, carry out or interpret research activity. In practice, the initiative created an environment in which it was possible to develop new research relationships across a range of partners, rather than merely transfer the locus of research to schools. Three aspects of teacher experience of the initiative are important to highlight. The first was the overwhelming testimony of teachers that the value of the initiative for them was the rediscovery of their professional confidence in a climate of low trust accountability, characterised by constant monitoring, target setting and bureaucratic demands. The second was the growth of familiarity with research practices that teachers gained through working collaboratively with their peers, with pupils, and with colleagues from the university. The third was how the process of research itself was necessarily situated in teachers’ own practices

As a theologian, the author is interested in the conditions of practicing theology in a contemporary secular context. In the face of increasingly weak institutional support, a renewed theological practice must recognize its fragility and thus learn to invent itself in a critical hermeneutic of theological difference
