    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     La concentración de glucosa en el torrente sanguíneo es un índice importante sobre el buen funcionamiento del sistema fisiológico. Normalmente, la glucosa se obtiene del pro­cesamiento digestivo de comidas, y es absorbida a través de la pared intestinal hacia el torrente sanguíneo y transportada a través del sistema vascular a las células, donde, con ayuda de la insulina, ingresa a éstas para ser utilizada como la principal fuente de energía. Bajo condiciones saludables, la concentración de glucosa en plasma aumenta después de las comidas y disminuye a niveles basales en las horas posteriores a la ingesta. La diabetes es una condición metabólica inducida por el mal desempeño de los islotes de Langerhans, que se ve reflejado en la producción deficiente de insulina, lo que conduce a la falla par­cial o total de la regulación de la glucosa en el torrente sanguíneo. Se ha dedicado una gran cantidad de trabajo experimental a obtener información valiosa sobre los orígenes y consecuencias de la diabetes, así como para tratar de identificar cuando un individuo es propenso a desarrollarla. Estos esfuerzos se han complementado con modelos matemáti­cos para describir las interacciones glucosa-insulina. Dichos modelos son propuestos y sus parámetros ajustados a los datos clínicos de los trabajos de laboratorio mediante técnicas de optimización. Contar con modelos adecuados capaces de presentar la dinámica de glucosa en sangre en condiciones reales, y que permitan incorporar mediciones de glucosa e insulina tanto en torrente sanguíneo como en fluido intersticial, será útil en la implementación de esquemas de control simples orientados al estudio de la dosificación exógena de insulina en pacientes con diabetes. El presente trabajo consta del estudio de tres modelos sobre las dinámicas glucosa-insulina. El primer estudio, presentado en el Capítulo 3, trata sobre la búsqueda de parámetros del modelo de Bergman mediante un algoritmo genético de optimización que ajusta el modelo a datos clínicos (tomados de la literatura) obtenidos mediante una prueba de tolerancia a la glucosa. El segundo estudio presentado en el Capítulo 4 se hace sobre el modelo de Hovorka, cuya estructura permite explorar la incorporación de un esquema de control en cascada y finalmente, en el Capítulo 5 se propone un modelo cuya estructura permite incorporar información sobre mediciones de glucosa e insulina tanto en plasma como en fluido intersticial, disponibles actualmente gracias al desarrollo de dispositivos capaces de medir dichas concentraciones en relativamente poco tiempo

    Análisis de transporte de partículas en medios porosos y canales con dispersión mediante simulación browniana

    En este trabajo se presenta un estudio de los coeficientes de difusión efectiva calculados mediante la simulación browniana para diferentes configuraciones de medios porosos, así como en canales con dispersión considerando diferentes tipos de fluidos (i.e. newtonianos y no newtonianos) y un breve análisis de las interacciones del movimiento del fluido con el de las partículas. La simulaciones son realizadas utilizando la ecuación de Langevin resuelta para un número suficientemente grande de partículas, de estas simulaciones se miden tiempos de salida en canales de longitudes determinadas con los que se calculan características del transporte en los canales, como la velocidad media de las partículas. Los coeficientes de difusión son obtenidos mediante el ajuste por mínimos cuadrados de las distribuciones obtenidas mediante la ecuación de Langevin a los modelos de difusio´n y dispersión Fick. En medios porosos se observó´ que la distribución sólido-líquido es un factor importante en la velocidad con la que se transportan las partículas en los canales, así mismo, se analizó la asimetría en el transporte entre dos zonas, una liquida y una porosa, encontrándose que el transporte se ve favorecido cuando las partículas se desplazan de una zona porosa a una liquida sobre el transporte de estas en dirección inversa. En el caso de la dispersión fue localizado un Pe de transición que representa una velocidad del fluido a partir de la cual este pasa de limitar el movimiento molecular de las partículas a favorecerlo

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
