Size functions for the morphological analysis of melanocytic lesions
No full textSize Functions and Support Vector Machines are used to implement a new automatic classifier of melanocytic lesions. This is mainly based on a qualitative assessment of asymmetry, performed by halving images by several lines through the center of mass, and comparing the two halves in terms of color, mass distribution, and boundary. The program is used, at clinical level, with two thresholds, so that comparison of the two outputs produces a report of low-middle-high risk. Neuromuscular recovery after a strength training session in elderly people
No full textAgeing is associated with an increased susceptibility to muscle damage but little is known on how this affects muscle recovery after exercise. Hence, this study is aiming at investigating the effects of a heavy-resistance training session of neuromuscular recovery of the calf muscles of a group of elderly men aged >65. Maximal isometric and isokinetic torque, muscle voluntary activation (VA) capacity, surface electromyographic activity (EMG), peak-to-peak amplitude of action potentials associated with twitch responses of plantar flexors were evaluated before and 5 min (post1), 24 h (post2) and 48 h (post3) after 10 sets of 10 repetitions of a calf raise exercise performed at an intensity of 70% of the individual, one repetition maximum. Blood samples were taken before and 1, 48, 96 and 144 h after the training session and assayed for serum creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and myoglobin (Mb). Peak torque during eccentric and concentric (120° s-1) contractions and twitch parameters were significantly reduced at post1, and recovered completely at post2. No significant changes were found in integrated EMG, M-wave amplitudes and VA throughout the entire test period. CK and LDH concentrations reached peak values 48 h after the exercise session and returned to the pre-exercise values 96 h after the training session. Serum Mb level increased by 73.2% 1 h after exercise and recovered at 48 h. The reduction in peak torque following a strength training session in an elderly population could be explained mainly by fatigue of peripheral origin. After 24 h the elders recovered completely their capacities of strength production, despite muscle damage being still evident 48 h after the strength training session. © Springer-Verlag 2006

La giornata di studio si inquadra nell' attività ENEA di preparazione alla Conferenza Nazionale Energia e Ambiente. Il lavoro presentato riporta i risultati preliminari relativi all'analisi di Ciclo di Vita del sistema esistente di potabilizzazione e trattamento reflui del Comune di Bologna. Tale lavoro è stato finanziato dalla Comunità Europea nell' ambito del programma Life-Ambiente ed è stato commissionato alla Divisione ERG-SIEC dall' unità AMB-TEIN-DEP. Ferro-ferri-hornblende from the Traversella mine (Ivrea, Italy) : occurrence, mineral description and crystal-chemistry
No full textFerro-ferri-homblende is a new member of the amphibole supergroup (IMA-CNMNC 2015-054). It has been found in a rock specimen from the historical collection of Leandro De Magistris, which was collected at the Traversella mine (Val Chiusella, Ivrea, Piemonte, Italy). The specimen was catalogued as 'speziaite', and contains a wide range of amphibole compositions from tremolite/actinolite to magnesio-hastingsite. The end-member formula of ferro-ferri-homblende is A□BCa2C(Fe2+4Fe3+)T(Si7Al) O22W(OH)2 , which requires SiO2 43.41, Al2O3 5.26, FeO 29.66, Fe2O3 8.24 CaO 11.57, H2O 1.86, total 100.00 wt.%. The empirical formula derived from electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal structure refinement for the holotype crystal is A(Na0.10K0.13)□=0.23 B(Ca1.93Na0.07)□=2.00 C(Mg1.16Fe2+3.21Mn0.06Fe3+ 0.45Al0.12Ti 0.01)□=5.01 T(Si7.26Al0.74)□=8.00 O22W(OH1.89F0.01Cl0.10)□=2.00. Ferro-ferri-homblende is biaxial (-), with α = 1.697(2), β = 1.722(5), γ = 1.726(5) and 2V (meas.) = 35.7(1.4)°, 2V (calc.) = 43.1°. The unit-cell parameters are a = 9.9307(5), b = 18.2232(10), c = 5.3190(3) Å, β = 104.857(1)°, V = 930.40 (9) Å3, Z= 2, space group C2/m. The a:b:c ratio is 0.545:1:0.292. The strongest eight reflections in the powder X-ray pattern [d values (in Å), I, (hkl)] are: 8.493, 100, (110); 2.728, 69, (151); 3.151,47, (310); 2.555, 37, (202); 2.615, 32, (061); 2.359, 28, (351); 3.406, 26, (131); 2.180, 25, (261). Type material is deposited in the collections of the Museo di Mineralogia, Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e dell' Ambiente, Università di Pavia, under the catalogue number 2015-01. Sample M/U15285 from the historical collection of Luigi Colomba, presently at the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino, was also checked, and the presence of ferro-ferri-homblende was confirmed
