    Common carotid agenesis and internai carotid stenting.

    Agenesis of common carotid artery is rare and no report of stenting procedures (carotid artery stenting) for associated stenosis of the internal carotid have been published. We report a case of internal carotid stenosis associated with this anomaly. A 73-year-old male with left internal carotid artery originating from the arch, with significant stenosis, was referred to us. Wallstent was deployed with success. Carotid artery stenting should be reserved to uncomplicated arch anatomy and plaques with low fragmentation risk

    Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid in the treatment of alcohol dependence: A double-blind study

    The effect of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid on alcohol consumption and alcohol craving in alcoholics was investigated in a randomized double-blind study versus placebo. Patients were treated as outpatients during a three month period either with gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (50 mg/kg/day, divided into three daily doses) or with placebo. Of the 82 alcoholics that entered the study, 71 completed it, 36 in the gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and 35 in the placebo group. Alcohol consumption was assessed by the subject's self report. At the 3rd month of treatment, 11 patients in the gamma-hydroxybutyric acid group referred to be abstinent and 15 referred controlled drinking; while in the placebo group only two and six patients referred abstinence and controlled drinking, respectively. Serum-gammaglutamyl-transferase activity correlated with the admitted alcohol consumption. Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid treatment decreased alcohol craving during the 3 months of treatment. Transient side effects were noted by six patients on gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and two on placebo. The results suggest that gamma-hydroxybutyric acid may be useful in the treatment of alcohol dependence

    Globalization of Distinguished Supercuspidal Representations of GL(n)

    An irreducible supercuspidal representation of = GL(n, ), where is a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero, is said to be “distinguished” by a subgroup of and a quasicharacter of if Hom(, ) ≠ 0. There is a suitable global analogue of this notion for an irreducible, automorphic, cuspidal representation associated to GL(n). Under certain general hypotheses, it is shown in this paper that every distinguished, irreducible, supercuspidal representation may be realized as a local component of a distinguished, irreducible automorphic, cuspidal representation. Applications to the theory of distinguished supercuspidal representations are provided

    Consider a restriction of an irreducible finite dimensional holomorphic representation of GL(n+1,C) to the subgroup GL(n,C). We write explicitly formulas for generators of the Lie algebra gl(n+1) in the direct sum of representations of GL(n,C). Nontrivial generators act as differential-difference operators, the differential part has order n − 1, the difference part acts on the space of parameters (highest weights) of representations. We also formulate a conjecture about unitary principal series of GL(n,C).© The Author(s) 201

    The Balanced Voronoi Formulas for GL(n)\textrm{GL}(n)

    Abstract In this article, we show how the GL(N)\textrm{GL}(N) Voronoi summation formula of [13] can be rewritten to incorporate hyper-Kloosterman sums of various dimensions on both sides. This generalizes a formula for GL(4)\textrm{GL}(4) with ordinary Kloosterman sums on both sides that was used in [1] to prove nonvanishing of GL(4) LL-functions by GL(2)-twists, and later by the second-named author in [16].</jats:p
