The value of training at the heart of learning transfer agentic processes : evaluation of training efficacy in the heath industry
The aim of this doctoral work conducted within the group Sanofi France and supported by the French National Association of Research and Technology (CIFRE convention) was to study how perceived self-efficacy and participants’ post-training reactions intervene in the transfer of learning in the workplace. Employees’ post-training change of behavior is a real challenge for the companies who recognize that individual skill development is a mean to ensure organizational performance. However, learning transfer is a complex dynamic process which depends on the person’s cognitive and metacognitive abilities to regulate his/her behavior over time. Hence, this thesis draws on an agentic perspective to develop a model of the motivational processes involved in on-the-job learning transfer, thanks to six studies. Three studies were conducted to develop and validate a learning transfer self-regulatory efficacy scale, a questionnaire of professional English self-efficacy, and a measure post-training reactions. The relationship between the different perceptions of learners was explored during two longitudinal studies, leading to the validation of a model of far transfer based on expectation value theories in a final study. The instrumental value of training, assessed through perceived utility, turns out to be the main mediator of successful behavior change in professional settings
Investigation of moderators of the implementation intention’s effect on behavioral change : reminders, mental imagery, and motivation
Even if people are motivated to change their behavior, they often don't act as intended. Therefore, in real-life situations, there is a gap between intentions and behaviors. With a view to better understanding how to support behavioral change, this thesis focuses on the effect of implementations intentions. This is a planning strategy that involves consciously forming an “if-then” statement, associating critical situational cues with a target behavioral response – to achieve a desired goal. Thought of as an extension of a behavioral intention, implementation intention prepares for action initiation, and increases the likelihood of achieving the planned action, compared with a behavioral intention. Three experimental studies investigating the potentially moderating effect of three distinct variables were conducted and are reported as articles. The first study assessed the combined impact of mobile reminders after the “if-then” strategy on the initiation and maintenance of organizing behavior. To investigate the format of the mental representations at play during the formation of an intention implementation, a second study examined the extent to which the use of the “if-then” strategy encouraged individuals to spontaneously use mental imagery and analyzed its effects on the achievement of an environmental protection behavior. A third study focused on the adoption of a hydration behaviour, manipulating participants' motivation through the content of a persuasive message delivered prior to the formation of an "if-then" statement. In their most essentials, the results suggest that the “if-then” strategy is an effective technique for supporting behavioral change. It was also found to promote spontaneous visualization. In contrast, no additional effects of reminders, mental imagery or motivation were found in our findings. The contribution of the research is discussed in the final section of this doctoral thesis
The effect of expertise on user experience in serious games
This thesis aims to study the relation between the expertise in video games and the motivational and emotional aspects of the user experience in the context of using Serious Games. This research is articulated around two axes: a first axis concerning the construction and validation of an interest for Serious Game scale and an evaluative test of expertise in video games, and a second axis concerning the study of the relation between expertise in video games and user experience in Serious Games, or “useful games”. We propose a measure of expertise in video games based on the lexical, pictorial and semantic knowledge acquired in this practice, based on theories on expert memory, the theory of working memory and the theory of encyclopaedic memory. Otherwise, we propose a measure of interest for Serious Games. The development of theses scales resulted successively in validation of an interest scale in Serious Games – the IS2G scale- and an expertise in video games test –the TECEJV. Finally we propose to study the relationship between expertise in video games, and motivational aspects in the user experience. This work led us to demonstrate that there is an effect of Serious Game's expertise and type on the motivational and emotional aspects of the user experience in the context of using Serious Games. Indeed, the Serious Game's expertise and Gameplay significantly affect the situational interest maintained and the Flow. This new light has thus been built in the light of a context of learning via the Serious Games in full swing
Motivation and school achivement : the role of Self-efficacy, achievement goals, and interest in primary school
It is emphasis to explain sometimes the success, sometimes the failure of the pupils. The difficulty lies in how to approach and define the term motivation since it consists of a mosaic of theories. Fenouillet (2009), in his integrative model, lists not less than hundred. In this work, we are particularly interested in three of them : self-efficacy , achievement goals and interest. We try to answer the question : What role self-efficacy, achievement goals and interest play together in school performance. This work leans on 14 studies led with pupils of cycle 3 of primary school (age 9-10) and the results allow us to see among other things that:-Self-efficacy (especially in French) positively impacts school achievement. -Performance approach goal negatively impacts school achievement. -Learning approach goal has no impact on school achievement. -The two avoidance goals are not necessarily detrimental to academic achievement.-Interest is affected both by achievement goals and self-efficacy, but has only a small impact on scholl achievement. Finally this thesis proposes several possible extensions to better understand the motivational dynamics at play in primary school classrooms in both the evaluation and in the multi-level aspect of these concepts (disciplinary and general)
Contribution of situational interest in the reconsideration of adult training satisfaction
The aim of this thesis was to provide a conceptual link between two types of reactions in training: satisfaction, as it is understood in the Kirkpatrick model (1959a, 1959b, 1960a, 1960b), and situational interest as it is conceptualized by Mitchell (1993), with the developmental approach of interest by Hidi and Renninger (2006). The initial four studies have allowed us to develop and validate two surveys, the first to measure training satisfaction and the second to measure the intention to return for further training. These studies provide a basis for considering training satisfaction similar to customer satisfaction since it predicts intention to return for further training. Moreover, five other studies have allowed us to develop and validate two measurement tools: training interest, distinguishing individual interest and situational interest, as well as topic interest. These studies have also allowed us to build a model of three forms of interest with regards to the distinction of Ainley, Hidi, and Berndorff (2002). Finally, the tenth study challenges the model of training satisfaction based on the conceptual model of situational interest of Mitchell. This thesis was conducted as part of an Industrial Agreement for Research Training (CIFRE) in collaboration with the “Association Nationale de la Recherche et de la Technologie” (ANRT) and the “Institut de formation des industries de santé” (Ifis) with more than 1,100 French professionals from the pharmaceutical industry who received training at Ifis
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
