No full textGli scrittori dell’Ottocento, da Vincenzo Monti a Ippolito Nievo, presentarono Giuseppe Parini (scomparso nel 1799) come icona del letterato povero ma di forte tempra morale, sdegnoso di ogni compromesso, maestro di virtù e modello di dedizione agli studi e alle istituzioni. Ad accrescere la fama e il magistero postumi di Parini aveva già del resto contribuito la tempestiva pubblicazione in sei tomi delle sue "Opere" (1801-04), per cura dell’allievo Francesco Reina. Sulla scorta di una consolidata tradizione di studi e delle più recenti edizioni, il presente volume intende ricostruire il percorso poetico pariniano, dalla prima raccolta del 1752 alle odi di ispirazione neoclassica, passando per le stagioni dell’impegno civile (in cui si colloca la stesura del "Mattino" e del "Mezzogiorno") e della prolungata elaborazione del "Giorno" ("opus magnum" mai giunto a compimento). La selezionata antologia di prose concorre a illustrare la varietà dei temi, delle forme e dei registri sperimentati da Parini (proposto anche nelle vesti di giornalista e di epistolografo), offrendo un’immagine il più possibile completa dell’autore
Robust data replication algorithm for MANETs with obstacles and node failures
No full textIn this paper we present a Robust data Replication Algorithm (RRA) for MANETs. RRA ensures persistent data availability by duplicating data over replica-nodes, while minimizing the consumption of radio resources. RRA is the first algorithm thoroughly designed to operate in environments with node failures and radio obstacles (e.g., buildings, walls). Our challenge is to consider such impairments as “accidental”; i.e., their occurrence neither can be run-time predicted, nor can be a-priori quantified in terms of probability. As instance, this is the case of nodes wandering in an unknown territory. To cope efficiently with the novel challenge, we suggest a practical assumption: during a refresh period, only a single accidental impairment may occur. Following this assumption, we succeed in formalizing (and solving) the resource minimization problem as the finding of a minimum-cost-set-cover. We assess RRA performance through NS2 simulations. Simulation code is released as open-source
Efficient measurements of IP level performance to drive interface selection in heterogeneous wireless networks
Get PDFSeveral solutions have been proposed for mobility management in IP based heterogeneous networks, working at different protocol levels, from layer 2 up to application level. In order to take the handover decision, many solutions require to monitor the performance of the heterogeneous networks to which the mobile device is connected. Measuring the physical or link level performance on a given wireless access networks does not provide a reliable indication of the perceived level of service when the application flows are handed over that wireless access network. It is therefore needed to take measurements at IP level, on the (bidirectional) path from the Mobile Host to an intermediate node handling the mobility or even to the remote Correspondent Host. Gathering such measurements in a timely, effective and efficient way is not an easy task. In this paper we show that a naïve approach using application level active measurements is highly CPU intensive. This would severely impact battery usage in Mobile Hosts and does not scale if intermediate mobility management nodes are involved. On the contrary we show that an implementation of active measurements in the Linux kernel has a very low CPU usage. In this approach an efficient use of batteries in Mobile Host can be achieved and intermediate mobility management nodes can scale up to monitoring thousands of flows towards Mobile Hosts. Finally we discuss how combining passive and active measurements could further improve the solution

No full textNella letteratura europea del Settecento l’antica tradizione della poesia pastorale conosce una ripresa vigorosa e viene reinterpretata alla luce di interessi del tutto moderni: la riflessione sull’ordine cosmico e il suo sistema di forze inaugurata dalle ricerche newtoniane, l’approccio filosofico allo studio del tempo naturale e del tempo storico (regolati entrambi da un andamento ciclico), la diffusione dei modelli di sviluppo economico fondati sulle teorie fisiocratiche.
In questa nuova prospettiva si colloca anche il progetto de La Buccolica di Giovanni Meli, poema composto di egloghe e idilli in dialetto siciliano, suddiviso in quattro sezioni intitolate alle stagioni dell’anno e pubblicato fra il 1787 e il 1814. Sia nell’ampiezza che nella varietà dei metri e dei registri quest’opera rivela la felice disponibilità dell’autore ad assimilare e rifondere originalmente alcuni recenti esempi europei (da Pope a Thomson, da Saint-Lambert a Gessner) e l’illustre tradizione ‘sicula’, ricondotta con orgoglio a Teocrito. Così, sotto il segno di Pan, nei versi meliani si alternano segmenti lirici in cui l’amore è celebrato, lucrezianamente, come «focu dilicatu» che «scurri e va di cosa in cosa», e terzine celebrative di un mondo agricolo dai connotati utopici, pacifico e laborioso, retto dalla giustizia e dalla fratellanza. E ancora, alla rivendicazione della necessità di educare gli uomini così come si coltivano le piante (temperando «pri la via di lu cori e di la menti» la forza selvaggia dell’istinto) si accostano le lodi dell’antica sovranità di Gelone siracusano, che impiegò la sua forza non per spargere il sangue ma «a stabiliri in tronu la raggiuni», o la contemplazione ammirata delle infinite specie che popolano l’aria, le acque e la terra, fino all’«occulti vii» delle sue profondità, in cui la natura custodisce pietre e metalli preziosi confusi «tra rocchi, crita e fangu».

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
