REVIEW OF NANA ASMA\u27U ON THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN SOKOTO CALIPHATE
Over decades years ago women have been agitating for their rights and gender equality.Women policy were insufficient to achieve their dreams of been equal to men. But on theground of adoption of the convention on the elimination of all forms of discriminationagainst women (CEDAW), many girls and women still do not have equal opportunitiesand rights recognized by law. Northern Nigeria is an example to this, which sokoto is notan exceptional. This gives motive in this paper to examine why denier of women inowning properties, inherits lands, inter-relationship etc. women were involve in socialexclusions, such as killings, female genitals mutilations, trafficking\u27s, restricted mobilityand early marriages among others which has social and economic implication. The studyused content analysis as a method of data analysis with secondary sources of data. Thestudy discovered that until the society is able to fix the failure of worth of women inrecognitions and explorations for them to have equal access to health, information andservices, education, employments, and political positions among others, otherwisewomen\u27s right and privileges will continue to be agitated. The study concluded that untilthere is drastic change for recognition of women\u27s right, across all aspect of society. Thepaper make Recommendations such as recognition of quotas system in all levels andpositions in order to enhance and recognised rights of women
GOOD GOVERNANCE: A PANACEA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA
Since the 1999 transition to civil rule in Nigeria has been on the search for sustainable democracy which appears toelude the country because of series of undemocratic behaviours mainly perpetuated by the leadership. Part of themajor reasons for these undemocratic behaviours has been traceable to lack of good governance which has become acommon practice even during the military regimes. But what appears interesting in the country\u27s democraticgovernment is that core values of democracy can only be fully realised if not pursued under the foundation ofprinciples of good governance. This paper, therefore, examines the relevance of Good Governance in the sustainabilityof Democracy in Nigeria. To this end, data were collected through secondary sources and was content analysed. It isthe position of the paper that good governance and democracy are interwoven and that the sustainability ofdemocracy can be achieved through the application of good governance principles as the basis for sustainabledemocracy in Nigeria. The paper found out that failure of leadership is the bane of good governance and suggestedamong others for leadership to cultivate the right attitude to governance by adopting the principles of goodgovernance and core democratic values for sustainable democracy
Comparison of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari Civil Administrations of Socio-Economic Affairs
The socio-economic development of any society is relatively dependent on the nature, character and pattern of its administrative leadership. Since its independence, Nigeriawitnessed different administrations or regimes with their concomitant implications onthe socio-economic development and well-being of its citizens. This paper examinesthe President Obasanjo\u27s (1999-2007) and Buhari\u27s (2015-date) administrations andtheir implications on socio-economic development in Nigeria. The data gathered aremainly from the secondary sources and analyzed using the content method of dataanalysis. The paper adopts the elite theory to serve as a theoretical foundation for thestudy. The comparative study revealed that socio-economic development remain partof the major challenges of leadership bedeviling both administrations in Nigeria. However, the Buhari’s administration demonstrated much leadership inapt inaddressing the socioeconomic challenges of Nigeria. Top on the scale are insecurity, corruption, pervasive poverty and loss of lives and properties, high level of crimesamong others, which further affects the socio-economic well-being of Nigerians. Thepaper concluded that even though the fight against corruption and insecurity are on thefront burner of both administrations, more proactive measures need to be put in placein tackling the menace headlong, and issues such as high levels of poverty, massiveunemployment and the problem of immunity clause need to be revisited
NIGERIA\u27S ECONOMIC CRISIS AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS: A DISCOURSE
The paper discusses that the conduct of Nigeria\u27s external relations has always been shaped by the structure of the domestic economy as well as development in the international economic environment. The paper harmonizing both liberal and underdevelopment approaches found out that Nigeria\u27s economic crisis stemmed from both the internal contradiction in the domestic policies and its environment as well as the incorporation of the country in to the international capitalist system. Using qualitative method through which secondary data was sieved, the paper also found out that, the process of handling and managing economic crisis will, generally determined the Nigeria\u27s image and position as a positive stakeholder at the international arena
WOMEN POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION: AN EXAMINATION OF THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA.
The low level of participation of women in both elective and appointive positions since the return of
Democratic Rule in 1999 has been a source of growing concern to many Nigerians. However,
concerted efforts have been made by government and non-governmental organizations to increase
the level of participation of women in politics in line with the declaration made at the fourth World
Conference on women in Beijing, which advocated 30% affirmative action. The National Gender
Policy (NGP) of Nigeria recommended 35% affirmative action seeking more representation of
women in both elective political and appointive public service positions. The under representation of
women in political participation gained root due to the patriarchal practice inherent in our society,
much of which were obvious from pre-colonial era till date. However, with the return of democratic
governance, there has been a marginal increase in women political participation both in elective and
appointive offices. The national average of women\u27s political participation in Nigeria has remained
6.7 percent in elective and appointive positions, which is far below the Global Average of 22.5
percent, Africa Regional Average of 23.4 percent and West African Sub Regional Average of 15
percent. For instance, out of the 43 recently confirmed ministerial appointments by the senate, only
seven (7) are women. Of the 1,487 total available elective positions in the 2019 general elections,
there were 26,137 candidates of which women were only 2,970, representing 11.36% and of this
number only 62 won representing just 4.17%. Against a historical background of women political
marginalization, this paper seeks to examine the level of participation of women on the Nigeria
political scene since 1999 with a particular focus on their performance or lack of it in the 2019
general elections. What is responsible for their less participation or parochialism for instance,
patriarchy, stigmatization, meeting schedules, low level of education, financing capability, political
violence, religious and cultural barriers and how do we chart the way forward. These include a review
of discriminatory practices, economic empowerment of women, support from family, fellow women,
and media, equal representation in governance, and proper perception of women in politics
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
