Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Contribution à l'étude mathématique et numérique de certains problèmes de membrane biologique, de fluide magnétorhéologique et de traitement d'image
L'objectif de cette thèse de Doctorat est de modéliser et d'étudier certaines équations différentielles ordinaires et équations aux dérivées partielles issues de la déformation des membranes biologiques, des fluides électro-rhéologiques et de traitement d'images. La thèse est divisée en trois parties indépendantes. La première partie porte sur la modélisation de la dynamique et la déformation des globules rouges et des membranes biologiques, comme les vésicules qui sont des modèles simplifiés pour les globules rouges. La première étape a pour objectif de déterminer la forme d'équilibre d'un globule rouge minimisant une certaine énergie. Pour cela, l'énergie de Canham et Helfrich est utilisée pour obtenir la forme biconcave. Plus précisément, nous avons dérivé l'équation d'équilibre et déterminé une condition (suffisante) pour obtenir une famille de formes biconcaves. En présence de fluide, les propriétés mécaniques des membranes biologiques jouent un rôle important sur la dynamique et la déformation des vésicules et des globules rouges. Nous avons donc analysé un modèle mathématique pour la diffusion de plusieurs espèces sur les membranes pour voir le changement morphologique de la membrane modulé par ses espèces (C'est l'étape 2 de cette partie). Dans la troisième étape, nous avons déterminé le mouvement et la dynamique d'une vésicule déformable sous l'action d'un écoulement de cisaillement oscillatoire, et nous avons obtenu une expression analytique de la viscosité effective d'une suspension de vésicules. Ce résultat va nous permettre de mieux comprendre l'effet de la déformation des globules rouges sur le comportement rhéologique du sang. Dans la deuxième partie, nous nous sommes concentrés sur l'étude d'une famille des équations et systèmes des équations aux dérivées partielles utilisées pour modéliser certain problèmes complexes. Par exemple: la modélisation des fluides non Newtoniens dont la viscosité change en présence d'un champ (non uniforme) électromagnétique. La difficulté mathématique de ces problèmes est la présence des opérateurs de type-p(x)laplacien. Ici nous avons démontré l'existence d'une solution faible pour une équation parabolique non linéaire ayant une condition de croissance non standard par rapport au gradient (présence d'exposant variable). Nous avons également montré l'existence d'une solution globale faible pour une classe de systèmes paraboliques dégénérés avec des exposants variables et des non-linéarités de croissance critiques par rapport au gradient. Dans la troisième partie nous avons présenté des applications en traitement d'images. Notre contribution porte sur la représentation des objets 2D et 3D en utilisant les harmoniques sphériques. Ces représentations ont été utilisées dans deux types d'applications en traitement d'images. Dans la première application, l'image à traiter est projetée sur la sphère afin d'obtenir les coefficients de la décomposition en harmonique sphérique. En suite à partir de ses coefficients l'image est reconstituée numériquement. Cette technique a besoin de moins d'espace de stockage. En ce qui concerne la deuxième application, nous avons construit un descripteur de forme basé également sur les harmoniques sphériques pour identifier les empreintes digitalesThe objective of this PhD thesis is to model and study certain ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations resulting from the deformation of biological membranes, electro-rheological fluids and image processing. This thesis is divided into three independent parts. The first part focuses on modeling the dynamics and deformation of red blood cells and biological membranes, such as vesicles which are simplified models for red blood cells. The first step aims to determine the equilibrium shape of a red blood cell minimizing a certain energy. For this, the energy of Canham and Helfrich is used to obtain the biconcave shape. More precisely, we have derived the equilibrium equation and determined a (sufficient) condition to obtain a family of biconcave shapes. In the presence of fluid, the mechanical properties of biological membranes play an important role in the dynamics and deformation of vesicles and red blood cells. We therefore analyzed a mathematical model for the diffusion of several species on the membranes in order to observe the morphological change of the membrane modulated by its species (This is the second step of this part). In the third step, we determined the motion and dynamics of a deformable vesicle under the action of an oscillatory shear flow, and we obtained an analytical expression of the effective viscosity of a suspension of vesicles. This result will allow us to better understand the effect of the deformation of red blood cells on the rheological behavior of blood. In the second part, we focus on the study of a family of equations and systems of partial differential equations used to model certain complex problems. For example: the modeling of non-Newtonian fluids whose viscosity changes in the presence of a (non-uniform) electromagnetic field. The mathematical difficulty of these problems is the presence of the operators of type-p(x) Laplacian. Here we have demonstrated the existence of a weak solution for a nonlinear parabolic equation having a nonstandard growth condition with respect to the gradient (presence of variable exponent). We have also shown the existence of a weak global solution for a class of degenerate parabolic systems with variable exponents and critical growth nonlinearities with respect to the gradient. In the third part, we present applications in image processing. Our contribution concerns the representation of 2D and 3D objects using spherical harmonics. These representations have been used in two types of image processing applications. In the first application, the processed image is projected onto the sphere in order to obtain the coefficients of the spherical harmonic decomposition. Then from its coefficients the image is reconstructed digitally. This technique needs less storage space. Regarding the second application, we have built a shape descriptor also based on spherical harmonics to identify fingerprint
