Microvessel quantitation in intraductal and early invasive breast carcinomas.
OBJECTIVE: To study the angiogenic process in intraductal carcinoma of the breast, with and without a small focus of stromal infiltration, and to compare the microvessel density between the in situ phase and the early infiltration phases of breast cancer.
STUDY DESIGN: Microvessel density (number of microvessels per square millimeter of neoplasia) was quantitatively evaluated on anti-factor VIII-immunostained histologic sections obtained from 10 ductal carcinomas in situ (DCIS) (category A), 22 DCIS with a small focus of stromal infiltration (category B), 10 microinvasive carcinomas (category C), 12 T1a carcinomas (category D) and 20 T1b carcinomas (category E).
RESULTS: The five categories of lesion had different values for microvessel density (P = .0017). Category A had microvessel density lower than category B (P = .0005). Category B had microvessel density higher than categories C, D and E (P = .0028, .0133 and .0033, respectively).
CONCLUSION: Microvessel density seems to be a feature related to each crucial step in the early phases of neoplastic progression

Ependymomas, Malignant Tumors of Pancreatic Islets, and Osteosarcomas Induced in Hamsters by BK Virus, a Human Papovavirus
BK virus (BKV), a human papovavirus, was inoculated iv into 3-week-old Syrian golden hamsters. Between 21⁄2 and 9 months after inoculation, 82% of the animals developed tumors. The induced neoplasms were ependymoma, carcinoma of the pancreatic islets, osteosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, angiosarcoma, angioma, lymphoma, and seminoma. Hypersecretion of insulin, glucagon, C-peptide, and calcitonin was detected in tumors of pancreatic islets. BKV etiology of tumors was supported by the following evidence: 1) No tumors with BKV-specific markers appeared in animals given injections of buffer, animals inoculated with BKV neutralized by anti-BKV-specific serum, or uninoculated controls; 2) BKV tumor (T) antigen was detected by immunofluorescence and complement fixation tests in tumors of animals inoculated with infectious BKV and in transplanted tumors; 3) antibodies to BKV T-antigen were detected in sera of animals bearing primary or transplanted tumors; 4) BKV could be activated by Sendai virus-medi..
BK virus-induced tumors in hamsters: A morphological, histochemical and ultrastructural study
Macroscopic morphology, histology and ultrastructure of BK virus (BKV)-induced hamster and mouse tumors were investigated. Groups of animals were immunosupprcssed to study the relationship between immune system and BKV oncogenesis. Ependymomas had the highest incidence, followed by tumors of pancreatic islets, osteosarcomas, lymphomas and sarcomas, sometimes associated in the same animal. All the tumors were found to be BKV specific. Ependymomas showed the shortest latency, infiltrated surrounding tissues but did not metastasize. Pseudo-rosettes were common and basal bodies were observed. Atypia and necrosis were more often present in immunosuppressed animals both for the ependymomas and for the other oncotypes. Pancreatic insulomas were frequently multinodular, possibly because of multifocal origin and metastasized to the liver. Hormone secretory granules were often found on electron microscopy. Osteosarcomas metastasized to lungs and peritoneum and showed the presence of osteoid, chondroblastoid and mixoid areas. Characteristic giant cells were present. Immunosuppression did not enhance tumor incidencc and did not influence the latency period. However, neoplastic growth appeared to be more rapid and with more aggressive behavior in inununodepressed animals. These findings suggest an influence of the immune system in tumor development, whereas the virus oncogenic process seems unaffected. © 1983 S. Karger AG, Basel
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Digital stereotactic biopsies for nonpalpable breast lesion.
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous biopsy (BP) is a valid alternative to open surgical biopsy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the results and diagnostic value of vacuum-assisted core biopsy (VACB; Mammotome) and advanced breast biopsy instrumentation (ABBI).
METHODS: From June 1999 to December 2001, 360 BPs were performed: all patients had dubious mammography lesions not confirmed by ultrasonography. Indications were as follows 264 (73.3%) microcalcifications, 64 (17.8%) nodular opacities, and 32 (8.8%) parenchymal distortions.
RESULTS: All BPs were performed with a digital stereotactic table with a vacuum suction aspiration system for VACB and a cutting cannula for ABBI. All BPs were correctly performed. Seventy-one (19.7%) lesions were malignant, whereas 258 (71.6%) were benign: 31 (8.6%) of the lesions removed with VACB were atypical ductal hyperplasia.
CONCLUSIONS: BP is a valid method for the diagnosis of nonpalpable breast lesions. In our experience, VACB is the method of choice because it is easy to perform and has high adaptability
