    A truthful auction for access point selection in heterogeneous mobile networks

    In recent years, with the evolution of new and content-rich Internet services, mobile network operators face the challenging task to guarantee ubiquitous access to their customers, while minimizing network deployment costs. In order to foster the opportunistic utilization of unexploited Internet connections of residential users, we propose a new marketplace where mobile network operators can rent the unused capacity of residential users' access devices (e.g., wireless access points or femtocells) when the traffic demand of their mobile customers exceeds the operator's network capacity. We formulate the allocation problem as a combinatorial reverse auction, which prevents market manipulation, and we further propose a greedy algorithm that finds efficient allocations in polynomial time, even for large-size network scenarios. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed schemes well capture the economical and networking essence of the allocation problem, thus representing a promising approach to enhance the performance of next-generation wireless access networks

    Loss Differentiation Schemes for TCP over Wireless Networks

    The use of loss differentiation schemes within the congestioncontrol mechanism of TCP was proposed recently as a way of improvingTCP performance over heterogeneous networks including wirelesslinks affected by random loss. Such algorithms provide TCP with an estimateof the cause of packet losses. In this paper, we propose to usethe Vegas loss differentiation algorithm to enhance the TCP NewRenoerror-recovery scheme, thus avoiding unnecessary rate reduction causedby packet losses induced by bit corruption on the wireless channel.We evaluate the performance of the so-enhanced TCP NewReno source(TCP NewReno-LP) with both extensive simulation and real test bedmeasurements, and we compare it with that achieved by existing solutions,namely TIBET [1], TCP Westwood [2] and the standard TCPNewReno. For that purpose, Linux implementations of TCP NewReno-LP, TIBET and TCP Westwood have been developed and compared withan implementation of NewReno.We show that TCP NewReno-LP achieves higher goodput over wirelessnetworks, while guaranteeing fair share of network resources withclassical TCP versions over wired links. Finally, by studying the TCP behavior with an ideal scheme having perfect knowledge of the causeof packet losses, we provide an upper bound to the performance of allpossible schemes based on loss differentiation algorithms.     Non-cooperative spectrum access in cognitive radio networks: A game theoretical model

    Cognitive radio networks provide the capability to share the wireless channel with licensed (primary) users in an opportunistic manner. Primary users have a license to operate in a certain spectrum band: their access can only be controlled by the primary operator and is not affected by any other unlicensed (secondary) user. On the other hand, secondary users (SUs) have no spectrum license, and they attempt to exploit the spectral gaps left free by primary users.This work studies the spectrum access problem in cognitive radio networks from a game theoretical perspective. The problem is modeled as a non-cooperative spectrum access game where secondary users access simultaneously multiple spectrum bands left available by primary users, optimizing their objective function which takes into account the congestion level observed on the available spectrum bands.As a key innovative feature with respect to existing works, we model accurately the interference between SUs, capturing the effect of spatial reuse. Furthermore, we consider both non-elastic and elastic user traffic, to model real-time as well as data transfer applications. Finally, we consider an alternative formulation of the spectrum access problem, where players use replicator dynamics to adjust their strategies, and we derive convergence conditions to Nash equilibrium points.We demonstrate the existence of the Nash equilibrium, and derive equilibrium flow settings. Finally, we provide numerical results of the proposed spectrum access game in several cognitive radio scenarios, and study the impact of the interference between SUs on the game efficiency. Our results indicate that the congestion cost functions we propose in this paper lead to small gaps between Nash equilibria and optimal solutions in all the considered network scenarios, thus representing a starting point for designing pricing mechanisms so as to obtain a socially optimal use of the network.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
