Alcune osservazioni sulla formula di libagione minoica

    No full text
In the present article I analyse some of the sign groups appearing in the notorious Minoan libation formula, notably a-sa-sa-ra-me (a term having a possible parallel in Lycian B) with its Hieroglyphic variant, whose reading as a-sa-sa-me-ne is here proposed and argumented; a-ta- (a possible Lallwort) and ta-na-, which alternate as first words of the formula; u-na-ka-na-si i-pi-na-ma, a sort of secondary formula added to the main one. By connecting already published theories with brand new ideas, this paper gives strong evidence for the presence, in the Bronze Age Crete, of a male sky god, venerated in peak sanctuaries (while cave sanctuaries were probably devoted to a female earth goddess), and called “Father” and “Lord of Dikte”, and to whom the libation tables were dedicated: this god has probably been the predecessor for the classic Greek Zeus, who preserves many features from the cretan god. Moreover, the article points to morphological elements in the Linear A script suggesting a possible link between minoan language and Indo-European languages, and the Anatolian languages in particular, including a -men stem for neuter nouns, and a -mi/-si/-ti verbal suffix set

L'intestazione della serie En di Pilo

In this article I analyze some of the main problems concerning the interpretation of the En and Eo series of Mycenaean Linear B tablets from Pylos, with a particular focus on the supposed connection between En 659.1-6 and Eo 444. The idea of rejecting a direct link between the two documents, which has been already argumented by various scholars such as G. Maddoli and Y. Duhoux, is here supported with a graphic reconstruction of the Eo 444 tablet. Such a rejecting allows a more adequate understanding of the whole En series, giving a possible solution to the problems concerning the fourteenth te-re-ta of pa-ki-ja-ne, which is now supposed to have been originally registered on the En and Eo tablets, just like the others. This interpretation is helpful in the understanding of the nature of the da-ma-te, as well: supposing a complete identification between the En series and the introductory lines En 609.1-2, a *da-ma is necessarily seen here as an abstract concept somehow related to land tenture

INTERCONNESSIONE GRAFICA TRA I VARI SILLABARI EGEI E LORO LEGGIBILITÀ

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the number of graphical connections between the various Aegean syllabic writings of the Bronze and Iron ages allows the grouping of them all into one single family of writing systems. This enables to propose phonetical values for a large majority of the graphemes found in the still undeciphered syllabaries, by connecting them to Linear B and Cypriot Syllabary signs, already deciphered. Every syllabary can also be compared with all the remaining ones, in order to determinate some of its peculiarities not shared with the others

Religion, Warfare and Business in Fifteenth-Century Rhodes

At the beginning of the fourteenth century, after the occupation of Rhodes and the installation of their headquarters on it, the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem made the island the hub of their activities.1 Although their main task was initially welfaretype functions, the Hospitallers in the East, as a military order, gradually assumed a more active role in the defense of Christianity and the redemption of captives. Nevertheless, during this century, with the exception of participation in some projects of crusade or with local leagues, the Order took no active offensive policy but rather a prudent attitude, focusing on defending and consolidating its position in this area of the Eastern Mediterranean. During the fifteenth century, the presence of the Hospitallers in Rhodes, in the Dodecanese and, more generally, in the East was threatened by repeated attacks that put a strain on the political, diplomatic, military and economic skills of the Order: the Mamluk and Ottoman military expeditions of 1440, 1444 and 1480, the war of 1502-1503, and finally the siege of 1522 that resulted in the abandonment of the island and the permanent Ottoman occupation in 1523. The financial needs of the Order of St. John were constrained by several factors. This paper, prepared jointly by the authors, is the result of the union of two parallel research projects conducted here and reflected in the drafting of paragraphs: Elisa Maria Soldani drafted section 1 "The Knights and the management of economic resources of the Dodecanese" and section 3 "Between Rhodes and ultramarine domains: the relationship of Hospitallers and Florentine merchant-bankers" while Daniel Duran i Duelt was responsible for section 2 "The Catalan-Aragonese in Rhodes: the power of the group"; the introduction and conclusions were written jointly by both authors.Soldani's work for this article is based on research conducted at the Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici di San Marino under the supervision of Anthony Molho and at the IMF-CSIC in Barcelona as part of the research group "La Corona de Aragón en el Mediterráneo bajomedieval. Interculturalidad, mediación, integración y transferencias culturales" directed by R. Salicrú i Lluch and funded by the MICINN (HAR2010-16361). The research of Daniel Duran i Duelt, meanwhile, has its origin in the commission from the Embassy of Spain in Athens to study the Spanish Inn in Rhodes and the Hispanic presence on the island. The authors thank Professor Marie A. Kelleher's review of the English version of this text.Peer reviewe

Premessa a Per d’Arco Silvio Avalle, «Le forme del canto». Interventi di Lino Leonardi, Pietro G. Beltrami, Maria Sofia Lannutti, Arnaldo Soldani

This collection of essays on medieval poetic metres, edited by Maria Sofia Lannutti following the arrangement conceived by its author, confirms the importance of d'Arco Silvio Avalle's metrical studies. Key issues are the relationship between metrical structure and music in the texts dating back to the origin of romance literatures, the multi-perspective complexity of the approach, and the exemplarity of the methodology used. © 2019 Societa Editrice il Mulino.
