A CARBON CONSTRAINED SOCIETY: THE ECONOMICS OF CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION AND STORAGE
Traditionally carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has been viewed and treated as a “bad” rather than a “good”. This mental model is of little surprise due to a well-established consensus on carbon dioxide as a pollutant constraining the sustainability of economic and social development at a global scale.
In the world where so many actors are preoccupied with shifting towards a low- carbon economy the very idea of carbon dioxide being a commodity (literally and not in the form of carbon caps or quotas trade, in which case a “commodity” is in fact the right to emit carbon, which is in its essence a very different concept) might be a big of a statement. However, this idea is not a mere perspective but a reflection of an already existing and developing market for CO2 with well-defined supply and demand sides. Paradoxically, the supply side of this nascent market was originally motivated by the intention to decrease CO2 emissions but now is giving rise to CO2 as a commodity. Ironically, the demand side (CO2 buyers) is the part of the market which is “hungry” for the commodity not being supplied in a demanded quantity.
This thesis provides a conceptual overview of the market for CO2 where the supply is coming from CCUS industry and the demand originates in the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) industry. The paper is based on the research project (the working title “CCUS Market Dynamics”) conducted recently as a part of master thesis and currently PhD research. The project started in late 2013 as a system dynamics modelling effort focused on specific problem of CCUS technologies commercialization. However, eventually the problem necessitated the construction of the model of an integrated CCUS-EOR system, similar to the demand-pull market for carbon dioxide currently developing in the Permian Basin, TX.
As viewed by the author, it is the market perspective towards CO2 which turned out to be the most insightful part and result of the modelling process. The system dynamics method and its endogenous approach appeared to be instrumental in grasping intricate interconnections between various dispersed (at least within conventional mental models) elements of the market for this new commodity.
This thesis presents the first stone towards a comprehensive research on the feedback mechanisms between the CCUS and EOR industries which shape the CO2 market. It is the author’s highest aspiration to provoke interest to this topic and create momentum for its further progression
Nitrogen doping and the performance of superconducting radio-frequency niobium cavities: insights from neutron diffraction and neutron Compton scattering
Neutron Compton scattering and neutron diffraction have been applied to investigate the influence of nitrogen doping of niobium on the performance of superconducting radio-frequency niobium cavities. To this end, a comparative study of the neutronic response of two samples has been performed. An electro-polished and nitrogen-doped niobium sample was compared with a standard, a niobium sample that has only undergone the electro-polishing procedure. The first piece of information, provided by neutron diffraction, is that additional conditioning of the electro-polished cavity material, through doping with nitrogen, leads to a systematically larger niobium lattice expansion, which provides an upper conservative limit of nitrogen concentration consistent with values reported in the literature. Furthermore, neutron Compton scattering shows a broadening of the niobium momentum distribution in the nitrogen-doped sample, as compared to the standard, thus indicating an increased degree of ordering and binding of niobium in the metal lattice. On the whole, these observations suggest that nitrogen-doping leads to some degree of lattice ordering, most likely due to increased hydrogen trapping, in agreement with previous results using surface spectroscopy
Characterization of surfactin-like cyclic depsipeptides synthesized by Bacillus pumilus from ascidian Halocynthia aurantium
A marine bacterium (KMM 1364), identified as Bacillus pumilus, was isolated from the surface of ascidian Halocynthia aurantium. Structural analysis revealed that the strain KMM 1364 produced a mixture of lipopeptide surfactin analogs with major components with molecular masses of 1035, 1049, 1063, and 1077. The variation in molecular weight represents changes in the number of methylene groups in the lipid and/or peptide portions of the compounds. Structurally, these lipopeptides differ from surfactin in the Substitution of the valine residue in position 4 by leucine, and have been isolated as two carboxy-terminal variants, with valine or isoleucine in position 7. As constituents of the lipophilic part of the peptides, only beta-hydroxy-C-15-, beta-hydroxy-C-16-, and a high amount of beta-hydroxy-C-17 fatty acid were determined
Deepest sensitivity to wavelike dark photon dark matter with superconducting radio frequency cavities
Wavelike, bosonic dark matter candidates like axions and dark photons can be detected using microwave cavities known as haloscopes. Traditionally, haloscopes consist of tunable copper cavities operating in the TM010 mode, but ohmic losses have limited their performance. In contrast, superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities can achieve quality factors of similar to 10(10), perhaps 5 orders of magnitude better than copper cavities, leading to more sensitive dark matter detectors. In this paper, we first derive that the scan rate of a haloscope experiment is proportional to the loaded quality factor Q(L), even if the cavity bandwidth is much narrower than the dark matter halo line shape. We then present a proof-of-concept search for dark photon dark matter using a nontunable ultrahigh-quality SRF cavity. We exclude dark photon dark matter with kinetic mixing strengths of chi > 1.5 x 10(-16) for a dark photon mass of m(A), = 5.35 mu eV, achieving the deepest exclusion to wavelike dark photons by almost an order of magnitude
Carbon capture utilization and storage market dynamics: Matching CO2 supply and demand for enhanced oil recovery
This thesis describes the project, which is a part of a wider collaboration between the University of Bergen, Norway and the University of North Dakota (UND) and the Institute for Energy Studies (IES), US established in March 2013. The project was performed by Eduard Romanenko, the author of this thesis, together with his European Master in System Dynamics colleague Julian Andres Gill Garcia, who focused on a different but related aspect of the issue, under the supervision of Prof. Pål Davidsen (University of Bergen) and Scott T. Johnson, a Principal Advisor in the IES. The fieldwork was conducted in March-May 2014 in Grand Forks, ND. There is currently a significant number of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies under development and assessment in the US and globally. Most of these technologies have been tested in small scale. The IES has developed and successfully tested the UND technology called CACHYS. Yet, the further commercialization of this and similar technologies is constrained by unfavorable economics of high costs and uncertain potential benefits. On the other hand, there is the CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) industry whose current development is constrained by the lack of CO2 supplies. For the CCUS developers like the IES, CO2-EOR represents an excellent source of demand, which has the potential to pay additional costs of CCUS commercialization. The challenge is that there is a gap between the maximum willingness to pay for CO2 by EOR operators and the costs of CO2 capture by the CCUS. Yet, there is a potential for costs reduction attributed to anticipate learning effect in the CCUS industry. To study the problem, the system dynamics model of an integrated CO2-EOR-CCUS system, similar to the demand-pull market for carbon dioxide currently developing in the Permian Basin, TX, has been constructed. By making explicit the key feedback structure behind the CO2-EOR-CCUS system, the model reveals the reinforcing mechanisms that can potentially generate the self- sustaining growth and provides a simulation environment where policies aimed at activating those mechanisms can be tested on their robustness. The thesis is structured as following. Chapter 1 defines the context, problem, research objectives and research questions. Chapter 2 describes the structure of the model both from stock-and-flow and feedback perspective. Chapter 3 is devoted to the behavior that the model produces. Chapter 4 establishes the confidence in the model through validation analysis. Chapter 5 deals with policy design and testing. The thesis concludes with the summary of results, a discussion on limitations and directions for further work
Understanding mechanism of performance improvement in nitrogen-doped niobium superconducting radio frequency cavity
Niobium superconducting radiofrequency cavities enable applications in modern accelerators and quantum computers. However, the surface resistance significantly deteriorates the cavities’ performance. Nitrogen doping surface treatment can consistently increase cavity performance by reducing surface resistance, but the improvement mechanism is not fully understood. Herein, we employed transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy to uncover the structural and chemical differences of the Nb/air interface between the non-doped and nitrogen-doped cavities. The results indicate that nitrogen doping passivates the Nb surface by introducing a compressive stress/strain close to the Nb/air interface, which impedes the diffusion of oxygen and hydrogen atoms and reduces surface oxide thickness.This article is published as Fang, Xiaotian, Jin-Su Oh, Matt Kramer, A. Summary
Patients with lipomas in the maxillofacial area show some types of psychological reactions. But the most focused attention of the doctor in the postoperative period is required by the patients of euphoric-anosognosic psychosomatic group due to the high level of compliance between psychological reactions and somatic indicators. Was determined of three psychosomatic groups: anxiety-obsessive-phobic, euphoric-anosognosic and harmonious. Just Like a Woman. Bob Dylan o kobietach i mężczyznach
The article is devoted to discussion about identity. This is one of the important topics of contemporary Ukrainian literature and culture. Research focuses on the concept of edge identity. This concept is borrowed from the concept of Tony Judt. It accurately reflects the feelings of a Ukrainian in his country and in Europe. Such identity is formed not through geography, but through recollection. This aspect is well represented in the Sergii Zhadan’s novel "Immigrant Song". Novel is a very interesting example of the Ukrainian writer’s comprehension of the issues of Ukrainian identity within Ukraine and in Europe. In addition, in the article author analyzes the dynamics of identity formation in Ukrainian mass media, scientific researches and works of Ukrainian literature at the beginning of the 21th century. It is concluded that at the present stage two important directions in the Ukrainian literature can be singled out. The first direction is dedicated to the past, which promotes the development of genres of historical, historical and philosophical novel in high literature, historical and adventure novel in mass literature. The second direction is a broad scientific debate around identity issues, as well as a broad conversation about identity in mass media. These two directions contain the main considerations that are embodied in the story of Sergei Zhadan "Immigrant song". In this model, the identity of the main components is the geographical coordinates of " local " and "foreign" spaces, the border between Ukraine and Europe, the search for the character of "local" space, memories, reflection, values. The author proves that contemporary Ukrainian high and mass literature writes about the phenomenon of edge identity
