Abstract : This work is a historical narrative about juridical ideas of Professor Miguel Reale, a brasilian jurist and philosopher, from the time he became involved with the political movement known as ?Integralismo? (1933) until the publication of ?Filosofia do Direito? (1953). This research was based on my interpretation of Reale?s memories (?Memórias?, from 1987), in comparison with his works about ?Integralismo?, Theory of Law, Theory of State, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Law. In adition to this, it contains an empirical research about ?Acção?, an integralist newspaper directed by Reale between 1936 and 1938. Nowadays, this material is microfilmed in the ?Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo?, the State of São Paulo?s Public Archive. The intellectual and political trajectories of the author were analyzed altogether, through the methods of historiography and sociology of intellectuals. Some analytical categories created by Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu were used to achieve this purpose

Un homenaje a Miguel Reale (1910-2006)

This article pays homage to the intellectual journey of Miguel REALE and to the unquestionable relevance of his contributions to philosophy of law. Not only did REALE combine the duality between thought and action in his philosophy, but also their mutual implication, convinced as he was that the starting point for the practice of philosophy of law resides in the jurist’s experience. Among his most remarkable contributions the author points out REALE’S three-dimensionalism, in which the sociological perspective of the fact, the philosophical perspective of the value of the fair and the perspective of the norm in the scope of legal dogmatics are brought together in a continuous interrelationship and interdependence. In addition, the author shows some contributions in which REALE’S three-dimensionalism offers new means of understanding.

On the importance of background subtraction in the analysis of coronal loops observed with TRACE

Aims: Using TRACE coronal observations, we compare the analysis and diagnostics of coronal loop after subtracting the background with two different and independent methods. Methods: We analyze sequences of images in the 171 Å and 195 Å filter bands of TRACE. One background subtraction method consists of considering background values obtained by interpolating between concentric strips around the analyzed loop. Another involves a pixel-to-pixel subtraction of the final image after the loop has completely faded out, used by Reale and Ciaravella. Results: We compare the emission distributions along the loop obtained with the two methods and find that they differ considerably. We also find differences in the related filter ratio and temperature profiles. In particular, the pixel-to-pixel subtraction leads to coherent diagnostics of a cooling loop. After applying the other type of subtraction, the diagnostics are much less clear. Conclusions: The background subtraction should be treated with care when analyzing a loop. The pixel-to-pixel subtraction appears to be more reliable, but its application is not always possible. Subtraction by means of interpolation between surrounding regions can produce higher systematic errors, because of intersecting structures and the large amount of subtracted emission in TRACE observations

Correlation between angiographic success and functional improvement assessed by exercise test following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Barillà F, Romeo F, Tomai F, Pace V, Valente A, Martuscelli E, Nigri A, Reale A. Source 2nd Department of Cardiovascular Diseases, University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy. Abstract Sixty-one consecutive patients with stable effort angina and single vessel disease underwent successful (reduction of coronary stenoses by greater than or equal to 20%) percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Anatomical results were analysed on the basis of functional evaluation obtained by exercise test (ET) 1 week before (pre-PTCA) and within 1 month after (post-PTCA) PTCA. Total exercise duration and maximal double product significantly increased after PTCA (4.5 +/- 1 min vs 6.9 +/- 1.5 min, p less than 0.001 and 14.1 +/- 3.6 x 1000 mmHg x bpm vs 18 +/- 4.2 x 1000 mmHg x bpm, p less than 0.001). Pre-PTCA ET was positive in 43 patients (70%) and post-PTCA ET in 15 (24%). In patients with post-PTCA positive ET, mean stenosis diameter reduction was significantly lower than that obtained in patients with negative post-PTCA ET (29.6 +/- 8.9% vs 61.1 +/- 18.8%, p less than 0.001). In conclusion, PTCA improved exercise tolerance in the majority of patients with myocardial ischemia, however the definition of anatomical success used in this study appears to be poorly correlated with functional improvement as assessed by ET

Diagnostics of stellar flares from X-ray observations: from the decay to the rise phase

    No full text
Context: The diagnostics of stellar flaring coronal loops have been so far largely based on the analysis of the decay phase. Aims: We derive new diagnostics from the analysis of the rise and peak phase of stellar flares. Methods: We release the assumption of full equilibrium of the flaring loop at the flare peak, according to the frequently observed delay between the temperature and the density maximum. From scaling laws and hydrodynamic simulations we derive diagnostic formulas as a function of observable quantities and times. Results: We obtain a diagnostic toolset related to the rise phase, including the loop length, density and aspect ratio. We discuss the limitations of this approach and find that the assumption of loop equilibrium in the analysis of the decay leads to a moderate overestimate of the loop length. A few relevant applications to previously analyzed stellar flares are shown. Conclusions: The analysis of the flare rise and peak phase complements and completes the analysis of the decay phase

Water and steam injection in micro gas turbine supplied by hydrogen enriched fuels: Numerical investigation and performance analysis

This paper investigates the energetic and environmental performance of micro gas turbine plant with two proposed concurrent improvements: the methane-based fuel enriched by hydrogen and the humidification of the plant cycle. The energetic and environmental benefits of both features are well-know, and the aim of this work is the analysis of their combined impact on the micro gas turbine operation. Despite enhancing fuel with H2 involves significant advantages like greenhouse emission reduction and a better combustion in case of low LHV fuels, most of commercial micro gas turbine combustors are not able to burn fuels with high hydrogen content unless structurally modified. On the contrary, has been demonstrated that humidified gas turbines (i.e., gas turbines with water injection, humid air turbine (HAT) and steam injection gas turbine (STIG) cycles) improve the combustion stability as well as electric power delivered and plant efficiency. Hence, in order to investigate the feasibility of the concurrent two features, the first step of this work was the thermodynamic analysis of a micro gas turbine supplied by methane-based fuels enriched with H2 up to 20%vol, considering both dry and humidified cycles. Since a combustion anomaly was detected, i.e., flashback, in the CFD study on the combustion chamber, a steam injection in the combustor has been added in the plant layout with the aim of overcoming the anomaly, and its effect on the combustion process has been analyzed also raising the hydrogen content up to 30%vol. The main outcome of this paper is the assessment of the feasibility of supplying the combustor of the proposed HGT-STIG micro gas turbine with a hydrogen enrichment up to 30%vol, achieving a safe and regular combustion mainly owing to a steam injection mass flow equal up to 125% of fuel flow

Reactivity of Sodium Alanates in Lithium Batteries

Novel chemistries for secondary batteries are investigated worldwide in order to boost the development of next-generation rechargeable storage systems and especially of lithium-devices. High capacity anode materials for Li-ion cells are at the center stage of R&D in order to improve the performances. In this view, conversion materials are an exciting playground. Among the various proposed class of conversion anodes, metal hydrides are probably the most challenging and promising due to the high theoretical capacities, instability toward the standard carbonate-based electrolytes, large volume variations upon cycling, and moderately low working voltages. Among them lightweight hydrides, like alkaline alanates, are an almost unexplored family of materials. In this study, we present a fundamental study on the electrochemical conversion reaction of sodium alanates: NaAlH4, Na3AlH6, and Na2LiAlH6. Our goal is to improve the understanding of the basic solid-state electrochemistry that drives the conversion reactions of these materials in lithium cells. Samples have been prepared mechanochemically and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. All materials have been assembled in lithium cells with a commercial liquid electrolyte to test their electrochemical activity. The Li incorporation/deincorporation mechanism for all materials has been explored by in situ XRD and interpreted also in view of density functional theory thermodynamic calculations. © 2015 American Chemical Society
