“Plurality, Identity, Democracy, Globalization…. A conversation with Sunil Khilnani” in Indiascapes. Images and words from globalized India

    No full text
Rossella Ciocca interviews Sunil Khilnani author of the much appraised The Idea of India: one of the best non-fictional introductions to the complexities of politics in contemporary India. The strengths and weaknesses of present-day uneven modernity are discussed around a few strategic topics. First of all plurality, which in its linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic variety has been vindicated since Independence as a foundational value, is seen as the quintessential resource for achosen practice of syncretism but also in danger of becoming the very source of fragmentation and implosion in a country increasingly maimed by fundamentalism and fanaticism. Democracy is then interrogated between the comfortable perspective of the firmly established and normally operating mechanisms of democratic routine, on the one hand, and the flawsof a still dramatically unjust system of distribution of rights and opportunities, on the other. Identity politics is in turn analysed both in its positive action of mobilizing society around the problem of social upgrading and in its unwelcome side effects of increasing practices of rigid and restricted classification fomenting division and violent sectarianism. In the end Indian growing cultural appeal upon the globalized scene is questioned in its complex relationship with the country’s quest for a role of protagonist in political as well as economic affairs upon a new multilateral international stage

A generalized relation between MWD and relaxation time spectrum

    No full text
Abstract An inversion procedure for converting linear viscoelastic properties of polymer melts into molecular weight distribution (MWD) described by the generalized exponential function (GEX) has been implemented and applied in a previous work (Cocchini F, Nobile MR. Rheol Acta 42:232–242, 2003). It is based on the elegant relationship between the relaxation spectrum and the MWD function proposed by Thimm W, Friedrich C, Marth M. J Rheol 43:1663–1672 (1999). In the present paper, such a methodology has been generalized to properly account for sharp MWDs, in particular, nearly monodisperse or blends of nearly monodisperse polymer samples. The generalized relationship has been verified and calibrated using the BSW kernel (Baumgaertel M, Schausberger A, Winter HH. Rheol Acta 29:400–408, 1990) to describe the rheological behavior of some Polystyrene samples from the literature, in terms of the known MWD. Then, it has been successfully applied to the inversion problem for a wider set of samples, with both broad and sharp distributions. The Rouse contribution at high frequencies and the accelerating effect on the relaxation times due to polydispersion have been also addressed. Keywords MWD. Polydispersity . Relaxation time spectrum . Linear viscolelasticit

Rossella Di Paolo y la novelización de la poesía

In this article, the purpose is twofold. I propose a model for poetic analysis with categories traditionally associated with narrative hermeneutics. In addition, I illustrate the application of the model to the book of poems La silla en el mar, by Peruvian author Rossella Di Paolo. I use central theoretical categories from the works of Bakhtin, Booth, general linguistics and the theory of Latin American literary systems. The results indicate that the book analyzed is inserted in the cultured system written in Spanish with a proposal of novelization of the lyrical procedures. It is concluded that the proposed exegetical model clarifies several aspects of the books of poems that could be obviated in other poetic analyses.En este artículo, el propósito es doble.
