Involvement of amygdalar receptors in the control of anterior pituitary function
Drugs stimulating adrenergic, cholinergic or serotoninergic receptors have been implanted in the basomedial area of the amygdala in long-term castrated female rats, which were sacrificed at different time intervals after implantation. The data obtained show that: α-adrenergic receptors present in the amygdala exert an inhibitory tone on LH and FSH secretion and a stimulatory one on prolactin release; amygdalar β-adrenergic receptors exert an inhibitory influence on LH secretion and a stimulatory one on prolactin; and cholinergic receptors of the muscarinic type exert an inhibitory influence on LH but not on FSH release. Receptors of the nicotinic type exert the opposite effect. Cholinergic receptors of the muscarinic type seem to participate in the stimulatory control of prolactin secretion, while nicotinic receptors exert an inhibitory influence on this hormone. Serotoninergic receptors exert a stimulatory action on LH and prolactin secretion
Role of the organum vasculosum laminae terminalis in the control of gonadotrophin secretion in rats
The organum vasculosum laminae terminalis (OVLT) was destroyed by radiofrequency lesions in regularly cycling and in long-term ovariectomized adult rats. After OVLT lesion practically all cyclic females (16 out of 22) became dioestrous, as indicated by vaginal smears. At the time of killing these animals (8 days after the lesion) serum LH levels were undetectable, while serum FSH was as low as in cyclic animals in dioestrus. In the few OVLT-lesioned animals which exhibited some sort of oestrous cyclicity, serum LH showed a small subphysiological increase at pro-oestrus; this was not accompanied by a parallel increase in serum FSH and in these animals a delayed peak of FSH occurred on the day of oestrus. Ovariectomized rats bearing OVLT lesions had serum titres of Lh and FSH as high as those of ovariectomized control rats. It is suggested that the OVLT may play a role in the control of the cyclic release of gonadotrophins but is not involved in the tonic regulation of gonadotrophin secretion

Effect of ovariectomy on the binding characteristics of hypothalamic mu opioid receptors in the rat
The present experiments have been performed to analyze whether ovariectomy, performed in adult female rats, might influence the binding characteristics of hypothalamic mu binding sites. To this purpose, different groups of ovariectomized females have been killed by decapitation 1, 3, 7, 15 and 21 days after surgery, and the binding characteristics (Bmax and Kd) of the mu receptors have been determined in their hypothalami. Dihydromorphine was used as a specific mu ligand. The data obtained have been compared with those derived from the hypothalami of adult female rats in the morning of proestrus, when the density of hypothalamic mu opioid receptors reaches its highest concentration. Blood from trunk vessels was also collected for the evaluation of serum LH levels by radioimmunoassay. The results obtained have shown that one day after ovariectomy, the number of hypothalamic mu opioid binding sites is as high as that found in proestrus animals. The number of these binding sites tends to decrease on days 3, 7 and 15 after surgery. On day 21 after gonadectomy, the number of mu binding sites results to be significantly lower than that observed in the hypothalami of intact female rats in the morning of proestrus and in the hypothalami of female animals castrated since one day. The value of the Kd did not show any variation on days 1, 3, 15 and 21; however, a significant increase of this parameter (which indicates a decrease of the affinity of the ligand for its receptors) was observed on day 7 after ovariectomy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
