In un'opera letteraria dal titolo Le palais de Scaurus, F. Mazois prende a modello per una ricostruzione ideale della casa romana la dimora palatina di M. Emilio Scauro. Il motivo di questa scelta, con tutta probabilità, va rintracciato nell'influenza che la lettura della Naturalis Historia esercitò su Mazois. Plinio il vecchio, infatti, riserva a M. Aemilius Scaurus (pr. 56) una particolare attenzione, citando ripetutamente come detentore di primati e campione di luxuria. Attraverso il riesame délie informazioni forniteci da Plinio e dalle altre fonti letterarie, e attraverso l'analisi delle due opere architettoniche di cui Scauro fu artefice, la sua domus e il teatro temporaneo eretto durante l'edilità del 58, si delinea il ritratto di un aristo-
