On the Intersection of Fields F with F[X]

    No full text
This is the third part of a four-article series containing a Mizar [3], [1], [2] formalization of Kronecker’s construction about roots of polynomials in field extensions, i.e. that for every field F and every polynomial p ∈ F [X]\F there exists a field extension E of F such that p has a root over E. The formalization follows Kronecker’s classical proof using F [X]/ as the desired field extension E [6], [4], [5]. In the first part we show that an irreducible polynomial p ∈ F [X]\F has a root over F [X]/. Note, however, that this statement cannot be true in a rigid formal sense: We do not have F ⊆ F [X]/ as sets, so F is not a subfield of F [X]/, and hence formally p is not even a polynomial over F [X]/ . Consequently, we translate p along the canonical monomorphism ϕ: F → F [X]/ and show that the translated polynomial ϕ (p) has a root over F [X]/. Because F is not a subfield of F [X]/ we construct in the second part the field (E \ ϕF)∪F for a given monomorphism ϕ: F → E and show that this field both is isomorphic to F and includes F as a subfield. In the literature this part of the proof usually consists of saying that “one can identify F with its image ϕF in F [X]/ and therefore consider F as a subfield of F [X]/”. Interestingly, to do so we need to assume that F ∩ E = ∅, in particular Kronecker’s construction can be formalized for fields F with F ∩ F [X] = ∅. Surprisingly, as we show in this third part, this condition is not automatically true for arbitrary fields F : With the exception of ℤ2 we construct for every field F an isomorphic copy F′ of F with F′ ∩ F′ [X] ≠ ∅. We also prove that for Mizar’s representations of ℤn, ℚ and ℝ we have ℤn ∩ ℤn[X] = ∅, ℚ ∩ ℚ[X] = ∅ and ℝ ∩ ℝ[X] = ∅, respectively. In the fourth part we finally define field extensions: E is a field extension of F iff F is a subfield of E. Note, that in this case we have F ⊆ E as sets, and thus a polynomial p over F is also a polynomial over E. We then apply the construction of the second part to F [X]/ with the canonical monomorphism ϕ: F → F [X]/. Together with the first part this gives – for fields F with F ∩ F [X] = ∅ – a field extension E of F in which p ∈ F [X]\F has a root.Institute of Informatics, University of Gdansk, PolandGrzegorz Bancerek, Czesław Bylinski, Adam Grabowski, Artur Korniłowicz, Roman Matuszewski, Adam Naumowicz, Karol Pak, and Josef Urban. Methylene blue—current knowledge, fluorescent properties, and its future use

    No full text
Methylene blue is a fluorescent dye discovered in 1876 and has since been used in different scientific fields. Only recently has methylene blue been used for intraoperative fluorescent imaging. Here, the authors review the emerging role of methylene blue, not only as a dye used in clinical practice, but also as a fluorophore in a surgical setting. We discuss the promising potential of methylene blue together with the challenges and limitations among specific surgical techniques. A literature review of PubMed and Medline was conducted based on the historical, current and future usage of methylene blue within the field of medicine. We reviewed not only the current usage of methylene blue, but we also tried to grasp its’ function as a fluorophore in five main domains. These domains include the near-infrared imaging visualization of ureters, parathyroid gland identification, pancreatic tumors imaging, detection of breast cancer tumor margins, as well as breast cancer sentinel node biopsy. Methylene blue is used in countless clinical procedures with a relatively low risk for patients. Usage of its fluorescent properties is still at an early stage and more pre-clinical, as well as clinical research, must be performed to fully understand its potentials and limitations

A View from the Garden: Contemplative Isolation and Constructive Sociability in Lucretius and in the Epicurean Tradition

    No full text
It is often assumed that Epicurean philosophy and its foremost Roman prophet, T. Lucretius Carus, adopted a deeply hostile attitude towards both politics and religion. Individualistic (or even solipsistic) interpretations of Epicureanism – as well as of the Epicurean catechism of De Rerum Natura – have long co-existed with, and provided support to, the claim that the Epicureans attached little value to religious experiences. In the present paper, I shall argue that, in this and many other respects, the modern reception of Epicureanism – with its brave aspirations after the liberation of science from social and religious restraints – has had undue influence on our understanding of De Rerum Natura and its culturally embedded discourse on the self. I shall build on the results of some relatively recent studies that have thrown a different light on Epicurus’ social theory and its historical realization, in an attempt to show that, far from being a morally isolationist system of thought, Epicureanism relied on a careful and, so to speak, osmotic connection between self-improvement and altruistic commitment – between scientific knowledge, contemplative awareness, and constructive sociability. In an age in which the inherited models of political participation, rational analysis, and religious sensibility were thoroughly reassessed by the members of the Roman intellectual elite, Lucretius elaborated a thought-provoking recipe for achieving individual and social peace that required a radical transformation of consciousness and the transition to a new form of worship

W niniejszym artykule autor przedstawia stosowanie metod analizy przetwarzania języka naturalnego (NLP) w obszarze polskich badań. In the following paper author discuss the natural language processing method (NLP) usage in polish academic literature. In the analysis three fields were pointed out: sociology, political science and literature science. Three groups of texts were presented from Marek Troszyński, Paweł Matuszewski and Maciej Eder. As the result of the conducted analysis author emphasized the most important methodological aspects of NLP usage: contexts, opportunities and risks. Finally, author indicated areas for the further research where NLP would be beneficial method

Pozwala to wskazać na rolę kina w rozpoznaniu ludzkiej bezbronności i cielesnej kruchości (vulnerability), którą w obliczu śmierci ludzie dzielą z innymi zwierzętami. The author analyses the film medium as an effective tool in animal studies, focusing on the issues of death and ability to re-animate dead bodies. Based on the analysis of several films (Un animal, des animaux, dir. Nicolas Philibert, 1996; Sirius Remembered, dir. Stan Brakhage, 1959; Kala Azar, dir. Janis Rafa, 2020), the author shows how reflection on animal bodies and animal death brings out a paradoxical feature of cinema – its simultaneous corporeality and spectrality. Referring to the historical connections between cinema and natural history museums, the author proposes the category of a “taxidermic cinema”. This allows him to point to the role of cinema in recognizing human “vulnerability”, shared in the face of death with other animals

Opinia eksperta, często stanowi istotny dowód w sprawie i m. in. na jej podstawie, organy procesowe wydają rozstrzygnięcia. Analiza literatury w odniesieniu do badań daktyloskopijnych i pismoznawczych, pokazała niski stan wiedzy w zakresie intersubiektywności. In each of the legal proceedings, in which an expert report is carried out, a major concern of judicial institutions is the assessment of the credibility of expert reports. These institutions usually do not possess 'special knowledge' from a certain fields of science, which prevents them from verifying these opinions. Expert's opinion is therefore an important evidence in the case, i.a. on this basis, judicial institutions make their decisions. In order to verify a method, it is necessary to check whether it is characterized by intersubjectivity. Intersubjectivity is a cognitive trait that shows how consistent the results of people using the method are under the same conditions. The higher the degree of intersubjectivity, the more reliable the method is. The analysis of the literature in relation to fingerprints analysis and handwriting analysis, showed a low level of knowledge in the field of intersubjectivity. The results of a few studies suggest that the above-mentioned expert opinions may be characterized by an inappropriate degree of intersubjectivity, and thus may constitute unreliable evidence in court proceedings. The author decided to determine the degree of linguistic and procedural intersubjectivity of the trace analysis methods used in the above-mentioned expert opinions. The results of the research indicated that the degree of intersubjectivity of these methods is not sufficient from the perspective of the judicial institutions or the parties concerned by the case
